Zappa "One Shot Deal” (Zappa Records)

A perfect companion piece to the "Torture Never Stops” DVD is "One
Shot Deal,” a collection of nine mostly instrumental live and studio
tracks all written or co-written, arranged, produced and mixed by
Frank Zappa at various times from 1972 to 1981 with a variety of
bands.

The sequence is not chronological, but somehow logical, beginning with
the hilarious but brilliantly executed blues goof "Bathtub Man,” sung
with improvisational abandon by keyboardist George Duke while tearing
up the organ alongside Zappa's blistering bending of strings. Then
there are the twisted vibraphone and electronic effects of "Space
Boogers” and "Hermitage” and the brassy meanderings of "Trudgin'
Across the Tundra” to put the listener in mind of some cheesy sci-fi
horror flick Roger Corman might have conjured up in the jazzy late
'50s.

More bluesy and jazzy hilarity can be heard on the lengthy "Australian
Yellow Snow” and "The Illinois Enema Bandit,” the latter featuring Ray
White on vocals and Zappa on fire with the fretboard licks. But the
mad maestro has never been more at the top of his guitar-hero game
than he is on "Occam's Razor,” which cuts through all the playful
nonsense to become the centerpiece of this collection of mostly
previously unreleased treasures from the vaults of the Zappa Family
Trust.
