release of the concert CD 'Joe's Menage,' continuing the Zappa Family
Trust's mission to celebrate and protect the legacy of Frank Zappa.
'Joe's Menage' was recorded in concert at the College of William and
Mary in Williamsburg, VA on November 1, 1975. This is all previously
unreleased material.
'Joe's Menage' continues the Corsaga series, with prior releases
'Joe's Corsage,' 'Joe's Domage,' and 'Joe's Xmasage' currently
available. "While it is the Zappa Family Trust's mission to celebrate
and protect the legacy, many of its releases, particularly the
Corsaga, are meant to educate the listener and to give them an inside
view of Frank Zappa's working process and other aspects of his
creativity," said Gail Zappa, who heads the Trust.
The album first germinated when Frank Zappa gave friendly fan Ole
Lysgaard several cassette tapes, including this one, in 1978. In 2004,
Lysgaard sent the tapes to Gail Zappa and she decided to release the
1975 music, which was restored and mastered by John Polito.
While the concert is anchored by Frank Zappa's guitar and vocals, the
other performers on 'Joe's Menage' represent an unusual lineup for
Zappa. Norma Jean Bell contributes alto saxophone and vocals. Longtime
Zappa sideman Napoleon Murphy Brock plays tenor saxophone and sings;
Andre Lewis plays keyboards and sings; former Mother of Invention
member Roy Estrada lends bass and vocals; and Terry Bozzio drums.
(Bozzio and Brock have played with Dweezil Zappa as well.
)

Frank Zappa, American composer, was born in 1940 and died in 1993.

I have heard, that is *the* solo vehicle for this band. Why not
release Osaka? The boot is killer; it would be great to get it in

The 11/3 and 11/30 are the only known 1975 performances after 10/31.
11/30 is "vamp" only according to FZShows.

If this is a mirror of a cassette. I thought FZ:OZ was sourced from some
master tapes. Wasn't it?
I would image the sound quality is less than stellar.

According to one zappateer who has received his copy already, it "sounds
unbelievable".
What did you think of the two cassette-sourced tracks on Imaginary
Diseases?

That wasn't bad. A previous release from cassette; Joe's Domage did however
have less than stellar quality. This one seems to be from a concert, not a
rehearsal, and a courtesy tape that FZ himself floated out to a fan. I'm
just saying; Why not dig for the source tape and release the whole show?
They could still tell the story of FZ floating the tape and yet release
quality above mp3/aac, which is what her/their beef with Rykodisc and itunes
is all about. Like someone else said about the guitar world tape, this would
be suited just fine for a $8.00 download.

There may not be another tape. Joe has mentioned that there isn't
much of the 75/76 band in the vault. See also FZ's comment that the
Osaka version of Zoot Allures on YCDTOSA 3 is "the only surviving
tape" of that band performing it.

When I mentioned FZ's YCDTOSA 3 comment to Joe, he replied that there
were some other 75-76 ZAs in the vault, but not many, and that there
were problems with them. This could apply to the OZ version (needed
to be patched with an audience tape) and the FZPTMOFZ Tokyo version
(sound/equipment issues).

She's not extremely well represented on this recording, either, but she
has a little funky vocal improv spot on "Chunga's Revenge".

That's one thing I find kind of neat about this recording. It comes from
an uncirculated tape. FZShows doesn't list it, so if it ever circulated
at all, it couldn't have gone very far. For years and years, the only
people that really would have ever heard this recording are Ole and
maybe some of his friends. It makes me wonder what other tapes out there
might have come from fans like Ole who were given a couple of random
tapes by FZ, be they somewhat well known or totally unknown.

"Honey, Don't You Want A Man Like Me" has that kind of weird
stripped-down quality to it on "Menage". Andre Lewis' keyboard part with
a kind of clavinet sound really stands out and Bozzio's drumming is
really restrained for him. Pretty cool rendition of a song we've all
heard plenty of times (which I, for one, still enjoy.)

I think what's on the CD is what was on the tape, as-is. There's an
unexpected fadeout and return in "Zoot Allures", I'm guessing due to a
tape flip.

It basically sounds like a really, really good aud recording close to
the stage, and I don't mean that as an insult at all. I like the very
"live" sound of the recording. FZ:OZ almost sounds sterile by comparison.
