"De même que Stockhausen m'a appris à ne pas établir de hiérarchie
entre les différents types de son, acoustique ou électronique, bruit
ou timbre, je ne fais pas de distinction entre musique savante et
musique populaire, ou entre musique écrite et musique
improvisée." Peter Eötvös - conductor

As an Instumental? Did they get the orchestration from Steve Vai?

-----
Excerpt from "Interview with Steve Vai and Joel Thome"
House of Guitars, Rochester, NY - September 2, 1996, 7pm-8:10pm

PR: There's one thing I have to ask: David Ocker has said that he remembers
Frank asking you to do transcriptions of Greggery Peccary he had never
written down. He remembers seeing the transcriptions, and he has no idea
what happened to them. Do you know?

Vai: [Looking surprised] I have them in my vault.

PR: You have them in your vault.

Vai: In a big box that says "Project Peccary."

PR: Will it ever see the light of day?

Vai: Well, Frank saw it.

PR: Was he pleased with it?

Vai: Well, he wanted a complete score of Greggery Peccary.

PR: Which there never was a complete score.

Vai: Well, there were bits and pieces here and there that he had, and I
rummaged through all of his stuff and got everything I could scavenge, you
know. And then I just sat and went crazy trying to make a score. And, uh .

PR: It sounds like trying to take Mahler's Tenth and finish it.

Thome: Uh huh! [Laughs]

Vai: I've got Frank's handwritten manuscripts for that.

PR: Oh my God.

Vai: Don't tell his wife.

Thome: This is the first time that this riddle has been solved for me. When
we were doing Zappa's Universe Frank called and said, "I'd really like to
hear Greggery Peccary with orchestra."

Vai: Oh yeah!

PR: Oh yeah, absolutely!

Thome: I know who he was thinking about now. He must have been thinking
about Steve.

PR: Why don't you do it? Why don't you pull it out and see if you can piece
it together? You know how many people have tried to complete Mahler's
Tenth, and they've done it successfully.

Thome: Yeah, they did. They did.

Vai: They have a score for it?

PR: Sure, yeah. [Looks to Thome] How many people did it, three or four?

Thome: Yeah, yeah.

PR: Kenny Wheeler did one, Clinton Carpenter did one, Remo Mazzetti did
one.

Thome: Who did the first one, was it Carpenter?

PR: I think Carpenter was one of the first to complete a score, although
his version wasn't recorded until many years later. But . . .

Vai: You know, that would certainly . . . you know, Greggery Peccary, I
remember when . . . Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt.

PR: No, go ahead.

Vai: When I first heard Greggery Peccary I was in college and I had to stop
the tape and go lay down because I couldn't believe one person had composed
this. Amazing. I had never heard anything like it.

PR: You have the perfect person by your side to help you complete such a
project. I'm sure you'd love to see it completed. [Looks to Thome]

Thome: Oh yeah.

PR: I could just see Steve working on it--his shiny hoofs up against the
desk as he draws dots and lines on staff paper.

Vai: [Laughs]

Thome: Frank would love that!

Vai: Yeah, he really would.

PR: Yeah, that would be quite a tribute. Your Ibenez guitar line - what are
your plans for future models?

Vai: We just came out with a brand new, Tenth Anniversary. It's a stunning
guitar, it's really beautiful. And another one that's a more grungy style.
What we did was, I had this idea to get a blowtorch and burn the guitar and
then stain it blue, and put screws for the fret markers. It's real cool!
Now I've gotta learn how to play Greggery Peccary on it. [Laughter]

PR: You should think of completing that, seriously. Keep it in mind.

Vai: I think about it all the time.

PR: I mean, for posterity, over the years you want that to last. That is a
brilliant piece of work.

Vai: It is, but it's there, it's on tape, and Frank did it better than most
people can, probably anybody can. But, I'd love to do something like that.
It's been a dream to do something like that. I'd like to do the whole third
side of the Roxy & Elsewhere record.

PR: Good. You should do his entire catalog. [Laughter]

Vai: One of these days, we will. [Laughs]

Thanks for the two great posts about the Royce Hall shows! I'll have to go
back and listen to the tapes I have of those performances so I can hear your
improv. It's been a few years since I've dug those out - they are audience
recordings but very listenable as I recall. And as I'm sure you know,
Orchestral Favorites was culled from those shows. Also, Frank used 'Naval
Aviation In Art?' from those recordings as an opening vamp for his next rock
band as they took the stage. By the way, Steve Vai recently revealed that he
has the master score for GP and is interested in possibly doing a
rock/orchestra performance of the piece. I know that Joel Thome (Orchestra
Of Our Time) has expressed interest in doing it with Steve. Also, I have to
ask about the comment David Ocker made in the Internet interview I did with
him. I refer to this part:

~~~~~~
David: (referring to the Greggery Peccary notes:) Anyway, in one of the
folders was a list of the players - all studio people, good ones. I remember
only a few of the names - Pam Goldsmith was the violist (she had to play the
fiendish viola solos in Bogus Pomp). Her part to that piece had been run
over by a tire of some sort - like a car or motorcycle tire. I met her once
and asked if the part had been run over intentionally. She denied it. Other
names that I remember are Earle Dumler (an oboist who was also the
contractor), Emil Richards (percussionist) and Malcomb McNabb (trumpet).
More likely they performed the 2000 arrangement by Ali N. Askin (as
recorded by the Ensemble Modern).
**TROLLWATCH ADVISORY**
The new Billy Cmelak "Tribute" Photo Site is up at
http://www.buccaneerpublishing.com/Cmelak.htm
William Cmelak
William A. "Bill" Cmelak is the infamous troll who posts as
Hoo...@Spamcop.net. Cmelak, or "Little Willie" as his ex-wife Lori
used to call him when discussing his sexual abilities, is an
unattractive, overweight 54-year old man (think in terms of Haystacks
Calhoun with bad teeth) living in the small town of Antigo, Wisconsin.
Harboring a desire to flee to warmer climates, poor finances have
constrained Cmelak to a life in various rural parts of Wisconsin. A
wannabe outdoorsman and "frugal living" enthusiast, Cmelak's
cheap lifestyle has been encouraged by a series of debts and resulting
lawsuits that he incurred in recent years (go to
http://wcca.wicourts.gov/ and search for "William Cmelak" for a
portion of his legal problems). Were it not for a piece of property
that Cmelak inherited from an elderly relative in Antigo he would
undoubtedly be homeless today.
Variously listing his occupation as "foole" and as "self-made
nobody" Cmelak suffers from extremely low self esteem. His current
occupation is unknown but is believed to be clerk at a convenience
store. Cmelak has a strong jealously of those that he feels are more
successful than himself and his standard trolls include distortion of
the facts (he will make up financial records of his victims while not
mentioning that he is a debtor, for instance). Falsification of
newsgroup posts and email correspondence, are known tactics of Cmelak.
GENERALLY SPEAKING, IF CMELAK WRITES IT, ASSUME THAT IT IS A LIE.
Cmelak has been known to work in conjunction with other trolls,
including the equally infamous Karen Anderson troll (Karen Anderson
becomes infatuated with men that she has never met. To date, she has
stalked between 5 and 7 men that she has meet, often under platonic
circumstances, online). Cmelak has also been know to work in
conjunction with anti-Mexican racists, an unsavory group that he feels
that he can draw support from.
Cmelak is a voracious reader, particularly of fiction, as would be
typical of a loner living a frugal lifestyle in a cold climate. Cmelak
is described by neighbors as being a loner, "weird," and generally
antisocial. There is no evidence that he dates or has shown any
interest in women since his wife left him circa 1995. Small children
and barnyard animals may be at risk if left alone with Cmelak.
Cmelak is a model airplane enthusiast and actively involved in the
geocaching community, where he can often be found hiding "treasure
troves" for GPS equipped enthusiasts. Think in terms of hide and
seek for near-adults.
