I had forgotten that this was to be released, so when I had an e-mail from Amazon recommending it to me at $14.99, I figured I'd go ahead and pick it up. When it got here, I was pretty excited - I like the extended Mothers soloing, so what have I got to lose? And indeed, it's a pretty nifty little release . . . but (of course there's a but) so much of it has *already been released*. On the first disc, we have the Mozart Piano Sonata from YCDTOSA, "You Never Know Who Your Friends Are," more commonly known as "Harmonica Fun," from the Mystery Disc, and "Uncle Rhebus," which is "King Kong" from The Ark (also edited into some tracks on YCDTOSA #5). So right there, more than half of Disc 1 is stuff I already own. Disc 2 starts of with The Lost Episodes's "The Big Squeeze," and a piece called "There is No Heaven From Where Slogans go to Die" which is YCDTOSA #4's "You Call That Music?" in a slightly longer edit. "Squeeze it" is yet another edit of the same material as "Right There" on YCDTOSA 5 and the Mystery Disc's "Skweezit," and once again the LP-side-length "King Kong" jam titled "The Subcutaneous Peril" is from the Carnegie Hall set.

So, to sum up, out of 82:40 of "new" music, about 55 minutes of it is actually previously released. Ugh, thanks a lot, ZFT. At least I didn't get completely dicked over by Barfko-Swill prices. If I had, I'd have ended up paying $23+ for less than a half hour of new music. I suggest everybody check Roman's site before buying any new release, just to see what's on it. I sure wish I had.

(Don't get me wrong, the music is great. I should know, I've heard most of it hundreds of times before.)

Yeah, I hear ya.
We older fans are going to have to recognize that some releases are
aimed at newbs who may not have forty-some years of stuff. I do think
it's a nice compilation. I edited out some of the stuff and made my own
single CD for listening.

I agree totally with you and have been thinking the same thing!

Disc 1 of FM is actually an awsome montage of MOI stuff and stands up very well on it's own. Disc 2 is superfluous.

What FM has made me do though is to listen through YCDOSA set from start to finish - something I have not done for years - and realise how much awsome stuff is in the vaults and hopefully will see light of day in the Road Tapes series.

FZ put this together. The different choices he made re edits, titles
and mixing compared to the later releases can be quite interesting.
And although what would have been side three is a bit tedious, most of
the music is great.

just picked this up on delicious vinyl - much of it may have been a bit of a disappointing repeat on cd but it's great to have the opportunity to have it on vinyl!
