Last weekend I (finally) watched Chad's dvd "Chad Wackerman Trio Hits Live".
Recommended.

Anyway - during a short interview section Chad tells the story about meeting
the bassist (Doug Lunn) during the auditions for -88 tour. Clearly Doug
didn't get the job, and Scott did.

But I had always thought that the "old core band" (veterans like Ike, Chad,
Scott, Bobby, Ed) didn't even have to audition...so maybe they did?

And if they did, does any one know who else was present at these events? I
know that (old) Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante auditioned
for the job that finally went to Mike Keneally.

But were there other serious contenders for Chad's, Ike's etc jobs?

In the case of Ike, there is a bit of controversy since Keneally's
website mentions other vocalists auditioning and suggests that it
wasn't certain Ike would be in the band. (No names known.) Ike
disputes this in Greenaway's book, suggesting that Keneally was too
new to understand how FZ dealt with Ike.

As far as bass, the only complication I know is that Arthur Barrow
said once that he was invited to join each tour after he left, but
declined. Did Chad say if Doug Lunn was auditioning, or perhaps just
accompanying someone else?

My recollection of that interview is that Doug met Chad when he
auditioned for Frank in the "early 80s", not 1988.

AFAIK Frusciante didn't actually audition.

Then, he might have been one of the three bassists who made it to the
last stage of the audition in mid '81. It must have been a tough
competition, because the other candidates were Scott Thunes and Stuart
Hamm.
