Mayor Sheila Dixon has declared Monday as "Frank Zappa Day" in Baltimore.

The eccentric musician was born in Baltimore on Dec. 21, 1940. He died
in 1993.

Last week, Baltimore's public art commission decided that it will erect
a bust of Zappa outside a public library.

The bust was given to Baltimore by fans of Zappa from Lithuania, where
his music was popular among the avant-garde in the early 1990s. A
similar bust is a tourist attraction in Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital.

Best press release of the day: Dixon honors Zappa

"Best press release of the day" is an occasional feature of Maryland
Politics in which we present verbatim a press release that grabbed our
attention. The following came out of the office of Baltimore Mayor
Sheila Dixon (D) on Monday morning:

Mayor Dixon Declares December 21st "Frank Zappa Day"

Baltimore, MD (December 21, 2009) - Mayor Sheila Dixon issued a
proclamation declaring December 21, 2009, as "Frank Zappa Day" in Baltimore.

Born in Baltimore on December 21, 1940, Frank Zappa went on to become a
world-renowned composer, musician, and author before his untimely
passing due to prostate cancer in 1993.

Frank Zappa has received international recognition for his talents,
innovation, and defense of the First Amendment. He has been honored in
various ways for his accomplishments and influence, including the naming
of Frank Zappa Street in Berlin, Germany, the naming of a small
asteroid, 3834 Zappafrank, and the erection of a bust in Vilnius,
Lithuania. Most recently, Baltimore's Southeast Anchor Library has been
designated as the installation site for a replica of the Vilnian bust of
Frank Zappa, which will allow fans, residents, and visitors to pay
tribute to him in the city of his birth.

"Last week, Baltimore's public art commission decided that it will
erect a bust of Zappa outside a public library." Fantastic reporting
by the usual plastic people. If anyone, be it the writers or the
"talking heads," had anything but air between their ears, they'd list
which library, as Baltimore has more than a few. <face/palm> So,
anyone from the area who can enlighten those of us who want to know
"where can I go...?" to see it once it's put up, it would be
appreciated. I may even escape Ye Olde Toxic State of New Jersey &
take a ride on down to see it once it's up & take some pictures. Did
any of the reports made on the topic say which library & I'd missed
it? If I recall correctly, there are several branches of the
Baltimore County libraries, as well as a few "free public" ones that
are not part of the county system, so it can get confusing. I'm
looking forward to seeing it though...

Yes: the Southeast Anchor library in Highlandtown.
