Surrealist Roberto Matta Dies at 91

Sun Nov 24,12:05 PM ET

ROME (AP) - Chilean artist Roberto Echaurren Matta, a master of
surrealist painting and sculpture, has died at a hospital near Rome.
He was 91.

The Chilean government Sunday declared three days of national mourning
during which the country's flag will fly at half mast at all public
buildings.

Chilean President Ricardo Lagos said that Matta's death Saturday
"represents the passing of one of the last major figures of painting
in the 20th century."

Matta died in a hospital in Civitavecchia, a port town north of Rome,
not far from Tarquinia, an ancient Tuscan town where he made his home
in what was once a convent.

The artist's funeral will be held Tuesday in Tarquinia, which is
approximately 60 miles north of Rome.

Born in Santiago in 1911, Matta worked as an architect in Paris until
1937 when he met painter Salvador Dali and was drawn to the surrealist
school.

Surrealism, founded in 1924 by French writer Andre Breton, advocated
the free expression of imagination in all arts, free of control by the
conscious mind. The doctrine was influenced by Sigmund Freud's works.

Matta's images of cosmic creation were true to surrealist ideals,
although his imaginative use of color and sense of humor made his work
difficult to classify.

Milan-based daily "Corriere della Sera" paid tribute to Matta on
Sunday by remembering how in a recent interview the artist had been
asked to which great painter he would compare himself.

The artist answered, "I don't know, but I think I am a Chaplin," a
reference to comic Charlie Chaplin.

My comment:

At least Matta thought he was " a Chaplin", not "drugs" as his buddy
Dali did about himself.

Matta was born on 11/11/11 - that's kind of cool.

After I posted the initial message it made me recall another
surrealist whom I learned of from someone mentioning him in this
newsgroup a few years ago, Giorgio de Chirico
<http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/de_chirico_giorgio.html>. I had
to search again for images of his work. Thanks again to whomever it
was that hipped me to him. It renewed my appreciation of his work.
