Is Robert singing backup (along with Ike) on the "imaginary diseases"
section of Stinkfoot?
One of the working titles for Dessicated was Four Synths And Plastic.
Does four synths imply four players? Robert and Mike, presumably. Walt?
FZ? Ike? Scott? And what does the "Plastic" refer to?
Ike is credited for synth on BBYNHIYL and MAJNH. What kind of synth did
he play? On what songs? Did he have his own synth on stage, or did he
play someone else's?
When Ike says "Satan?" at the beginning of Fire And Chains, it sounds
like he's doing Dana Carvey's Church Lady. Did Ike imitate the Church
Lady in other shows (or elsewhere in this one, 2/9/88 Washington)?
Is Robert singing high harmony on the "All your love" section of Oh No?
Who (if anyone) is singing "ooh" on Black Napkins?
At what time in Black Napkins has the guitar solo been edited out?
Who says "Thank you very much, good night" in Big Swifty (9:00)?
Does the lyric mutation "under the seat" in Cruising For Burgers refer
to something that happened in Rotterdam? Was the line sung this way in
other 1988 concerts?
Who plays the Hawaiian War Chant (2:42-3:01, 8:22-8:27) in Cruising For
Burgers--FZ or Mike?
Does Mike sing backup (along with FZ and Ike) on Advance Romance? Who
sings "It was a Timex too"?
Who is singing "ooh" on Strictly Genteel? Or is it a keyboard?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

-I only hear FZ and Ike, myself.

-In the few pictures I've seen of the stage setup in '88, Ike appears to have a
little rack of percussion doo-dads nearby (cowbell, etc) but I don't see any
kind of synth near him. Could this just be a incorrect credit? Did Ike actually
do any synth playing during the tour?
>Is Robert singing high harmony on the "All your love" section of Oh No?
-I never knew / noticed that high harmony was there until I listened to it just
now to try to help determine and answer for you. I'm going to say it was
probably Robert, since I don't think Mike did much (if any) high register
backup vocals. I think that was mostly Bobby's territory.
>Who (if anyone) is singing "ooh" on Black Napkins?
-FZ's guitar solo starts at 6:13 and I hear the "ooh" backup vocal from 6:17 -
6:36. I want to say it's probably Mike and Robert, but who knows, maybe Ed was
in there two? I only hear a two-part harmony myself. Maybe we can ask Keneally?
>Who says "Thank you very much, good night" in Big Swifty (9:00)?
-My best guess is Ike. Mmmmmaybe a small chance it could be Scott?
>Who plays the Hawaiian War Chant (2:42-3:01, 8:22-8:27) in Cruising For
>Burgers--FZ or Mike?
-I never knew that's what that was. I kind of figured it was just a little
melody FZ whipped up to preface the guitar solo. Anyway, as to who's playing
it, 2:42-3:01 is *definitely* FZ.. 8:22-8:27 is more than likely Mike.
>Does Mike sing backup (along with FZ and Ike) on Advance Romance? Who
>sings "It was a Timex too"?
-I hear FZ, Ike and Bobby. Bobby sings lead, obviously, and he's definitely one
of the voices singing "Adva-a-a-a-ance Roma-a-a-ance". I suppose Mike could be
in there, although my opinion is that if he is, he's probably doubling either
FZ's or Ike's vocal line and is probably mixed kind of low. I'm inclined to say
it's just FZ, Ike and Bobby Martin.
"It was a Timex, too" is definitely Ike in a raspy falsetto.
>Who is singing "ooh" on Strictly Genteel? Or is it a keyboard?
-Around what time during the song do you hear this, I'll check it out for you
and offer an opinion.

<snip>
I wouldn't be surprised if he wandered over to the synclavier or one of
the other synthesizers once in a while to trigger a sample.
-We should ask Ed. Ed Mann, are you reading?
Could it be Mike? I seem to recall MK vocalizing this during a show he
did with his Beer For Dolphins outfit at the Commodore Ballroom about
five, six years back, and it sounded exactly like the record.

It could be. It appears on BBYNHIYL and MAJNH, but not on BTHW, YCDTOSA
4, or YCDTOSA 6.

The part is pretty hard to hear. I agree that it was most likely Robert
if it was anyone. I just wanted to be sure I wasn't imagining it.

I was asking about the guitar solo that's not on the album. Is it edited
out at 6:35?

I also hear it at 1:16-1:33.

The Joe Cocker section, 5:25-5:59.
Thanks for your help.

Maybe Ed and his "Silicon Mallet?"
> Who says "Thank you very much, good night" in Big Swifty (9:00)?
Keneally?
-Hm.. quizzical. Perhaps Ed or Keneally, if asked, would have some information
about whether Ike did any synth playing. I'm inclined to think he didn't..
although, as someone else suggested, maybe he triggered a sample from the
Synclavier or something during "Pound For A Brown" or "King Kong"
improvisations every now and again, which could have wound up on MAJNH and
perhaps even during the improvisatory section of "Eric Dolphy Memorial
Barbecue" on TBBYNHIYL.

-Like I said, I never knew / noticed it was there until I knew to listen for
it. But yeah, it's there, and it's probably Bobby. :)

-That I don't know. I don't have a tape of the concert or anything. I mentioned
the time the solo starts as reference for when the "ooh" backing vocal occurs.
I only heard it clearly during the beginning of FZ's brief solo.
>> and I hear the "ooh" backup vocal from 6:17 - 6:36.

>I also hear it at 1:16-1:33.
-I wonder if that's not one of the horns you're mistaking for a voice? I left
my bag of CDs at work (and I took MAJNH to work today and listened to it), so I
can't check it out right now, but.. I thought I heard the "ooh" earlier in the
song, at the time you're mentioning, and I hit rewind and re-listened to it a
couple times and my thought was that there's some brass instrument in the right
channel that might sound like a voice.
In other words, I'm not sure about that one. :P

-My pleasure! :)

NP: "Donatello" by Jawbreaker
Didn't he also do something like this with Zappa's Universe or did I
imagine that?
