At the risk of drawing flames from the art world cognoscenti out there, I
have to add some comments to this discussion. In The Real FZ Book, Frank
discusses how he would much rather talk about what he does in terms of
entertainment than art. "Art" is anything you put a frame around and
pronounce to be art, but entertainment is much easier. If you are
entertained, then it is entertainment. IMNSHO, making CPIII out to be some
post-modern archtype amounts to wedging it into a highly ornate gilt frame
(which, on closer inspection, turns out to be poorly molded plastic with an
uneven coating of gold spraypaint) that has more to do with the person
putting it there than the work itself.
It seems to me that when art becomes art theory, it is art devouring
itself. The evolution of modern art is this process carried to its
ultimate conclusion, with the remaining players scrabbling to suck the
marrow out of the last of the bones (hence the mad rush to jump on the
post-modern bandwagon - whatever that is - in search of fresh meat).
I think I'll mosey along and find my asbestos underwear...
