"THE MONSTRO 10 RECORD SET CONTAINING APPROXIMATELY
| THREE HUNDRED AND SIXTY (360) MINUTES OF MUSIC. "
Anybody know what this was/is supposed to be?
That was what YCDTOSA was originally going to be.

From Greg Russo's Cosmik Debris (p. 74):
<<Zappa, who planned in 1969 to release a 12-record box set called: "The
History and Collected Improvisations of the Mothers of Invention"
changed his thinking when he released "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" and
"Burnt Weeny Sandwich". Now Frank wanted to release a 10-record set, but
he trimmed the package to nine records in 1971 by calling it "No
Commercial Potential". However, after running unsuccessful ads for this
collection in Playboy magazine, Zappa totally gave up on the idea in
1975.>>
It ended up being closer to four hundred and twenty (420) minutes.

PS --- What does the .dx in the pro wrestling group's name mean, anyway?
I keep thinking Denelux, but no, that's wrong.

It's still just an empty newsgroup that never had much traffic and now
has absolutely none except for my completely pointless crossposts (which
I don't know why I keep doing, other than out of the habit of adding to
just about every single post for the last couple years.)

Oh, it's much longer than that. It's actually over twice the original
projected length, although Helsinki was added in as an afterthought.

Good job, seeing as it was the best one of the series.
It has to be said that releasing the product first and then advertising
it might have been more fruitful.
"We spoke with Zappa in December '86, twenty years and four months
after the release of his debut album, Freak Out!, five after our June
'80 interview with him and the two keyboardists he was then working
with, and just as he was assembling a new ten-LP package, You Can't Do
That On Stage Anymore. This collection features live cuts recorded
over two decades by Zappa and his various bands. Any similarity to the
recent Springsteen five-album retrospective is coincidental. When we
joked that by releasing twice as large a compilation he was doing
Bruce Springsteen one better, Zappa responded offhandedly, 'Well, I
don't think there will be any comparison between his live set and this
thing. This is going to be a real musician's album. I think I'm going
him at least ten better.'" - Keyboard magazine, February 1987 (http://

The Barfko-Swill catalogs of that area were even mentioning "Lumpy Gravy
Phaze III", which obviously wasn't completed until even after YCDTOSA was.

In the Speaking Of Music q&a from shortly before the '84 tour, FZ
played a short set of Lumpy Gravy excerpts that included the lines
"this is phase three/well get through phase one and two first" (as
well as a portion of LG with Barrow and Wackerman overdubs).

Of course: closer to eight hundred and forty (840) minutes. My
arithmetic has never been good before noon.
And I agree about Helsinki: always been my favourite in that series.

I seem to remember seeing the MONSTRO 10 RECORD SET announcement on
the Barking Pumpkin cassette release of Joe's Garage in 1987.
The Barfko-Swill mailers around that time (86 or 87), which were also
included in Barking Pumpkin LP sleeves, read as follows:
--------------------------------------
COMING SOON
DIRECT FROM UMRK
REMEMBER UMRK'S MOTTO & PLEDGE
"WE FEEL IT IS OUR DUTY. . ."
LUMPY GRAVY PHASE III
LSO VOLUME II
THE HELSINKI TAPES (3 RECORDS)
THE NEXT GUITAR BOX (3 RECORDS)
YOU CAN'T DO THAT ON STAGE ANYMORE
--------------------------------------
Lumpy Gravy Phase III became Civilization Phaze III (although it took
about eight years).
LSO Volume II was released shortly after its announcement.
The Helsinki Tapes became YCDTOSA 2, although Frank kept his promise
on the 3 records.
The Next Guitar Box became Guitar, but the 3 records became 2 CDs and
Frank whittled it down to 2 records for the vinyl release.
The MONSTRO 10 record YCDTOSA became 12 CDs.
So, Helsinki was going to be released even if it had not been included
in the YCDTOSA series.

Coming Soon
To a Mailbox Near You ...
* The London Symphony Orchestra Volume II
- Includes "Bogus Pomp", "Bob in Dacron"
& "Strictly Genteel"
* The Helsinki Tapes 1974 - 3-record set
* The SEQUEL to the Shut Up & Play Yer Guitar
box set - also 3 records
* You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore (watch
for it on a double CD) - yes, and but also for the
rest of you THE MONSTRO 10-RECORD SET CONTAINING
APPROXIMATELY THREE HUNDRED AND SIXTY (360) MINUTES
OF MUSIC.
(Which I copied and pasted from
http://www.lukpac.org/~handmade/patio/misc/guitarworld.html
and I was the one who typed in and posted to affz 12
years ago.)
So the original plan was only to put out a 2 CD sampler
but the whole YCDTOSA (at the time) was to be 12 slabs
of vinyl.
Perhaps Trancefusion had been planned for release as part of Guitar but
Frank couldn't find enough solos he was happy with? Or does
Trancefusion contain solos recorded after Guitar was released - I can't
remember any more. Certainly there are two Dweezil tracks on there as
it is.
It came out slightly different than he may have intended it at the time,
though. I believe there were two tracks on the Guitar World set that
FZ's liner notes stated would be on the forthcoming "next guitar album"
(or box). I know "Down in De Dew" was one, while on Video From Hell, the
"Stevie's Spanking" solos from Rome also carried the same statement. Who
knows what else (if anything) maybe have been in consideration for
inclusion on "the next guitar box".
--
Milhouse
It does, as there's tracks from 1988, and I believe Guitar was released
either just before or during the 1988 tour itself.

Things That Look Like Meat (06:06)
previously unreleased - will be included in the next guitar box set
Down in de Dew (02:54)
previously unreleased - will be included in the next guitar box set
A Solo from Heidelberg (05:26)
previously unreleased - will be included in the next guitar box set
A Solo from Cologne (05:11)
previously unreleased - will be included in the next guitar box set
A Solo from Atlanta (04:05)
previously unreleased - will be included in the next guitar box set
1,4 and 5 came out on "next guitar box set", Guitar, but 4 and 5
are shorter on Guitar and 1 has an overdub on Guitar.
2 showed up on Lather, and 3 finally showed up on One Shot Deal.
I think this is true (it certainly was for YCDTOSA and Civilization
Phaze III), but the program on CD suggests that the length was close
to what he intended. The 2CD set would have required 3 records had
the entire program been released on vinyl.
--
Mike E.
Right. What I was trying to say specifically was that I thought there
were two cuts on that tape which the liner notes stated would be on the
next guitar record, but weren't. Clearly I fogot my (but weren't)
parenthetical statement ;P
--
Milhouse
I agree with the entirety of this statement.
Like I was suggesting, perhaps those few pieces I named which didn't
wind up on "Guitar" were the only ones left out (um or something yeah).
--
Milhouse
You could make a reasonable facsimile from existing
CD sources, but Fulcanelli and Duane are shorter than
their GW counterparts and as Mr. Buzby has pointed
out recently, Revised is a different version from the one
on Lather. Plus the nice transition from Finger->Revised
might be a little tricky to reproduce.
I made a CD-r of it sometime ago. Did you try Zappateers or the yahoo Zappa
group where vines of this type of material circulates?
> I made a CD-r of it sometime ago. Did you try Zappateers or the yahoo Zappa

Thanks; I did manage to snag a version that was circulating a while
back.
It'll do for now, but it sounds like it was made with Dolby turned
off and there aren't seamless track transitions.
I'm in the same siddy-ation, except I haven't even got a cassette deck
anymore and so can't listen to GWATFZ at all. If you ever do burn a CD
from your cassette, and were willing to burn an extra one (for
consideration, naturally) I'd love to hear from you. GWATFZ is a small gem.

My name is William Bill Cmelak. I am a fat and stupid shithead. I
clean septic tanks for a living. I am emotionally disturbed and
never could hold down a regular job - that's why I have so much time
on my hands to watch television, read the news, and repost shit to
newsgroups that you could just as easily read at Yahoo News.

I have been stalking another guy for almost four years because I am
jealous of him and because he hurt my widdle feelings and I just
cannot get over the pain.
I live in an old singlewide mobile home here:
William Cmelak
N9340 Pickerel Creek Rd
Pearson, WI 54462-8140
(According to the Langlade County Proeprty Assessor's office Cmelak's
"massive" estate that he brags about is 7 acres of scrub land valued
at a grand total of $33,500 [$14.3K for the property and $19.2K for
the improvements] and a fair market value of a whooping $37,000!!!.
The stupid bastard has been working his ass off for years and bragging
about a mobile home lot that isn't worth as much as most people's
cars! That, and he's behind on paying his property tax. **TRAILER
TRASH!!!** Wonder if Cmelak can even afford running water?)
I drive a 25 year old ex-military truck because that's all that I can
afford.
It's an old diesel truck and I drive that because I know that I can
steal heating oil to burn in the truck when I cannot afford diesel.
Which is most of the time.
My teeth are black and worn to the gum. I cannot afford to see a
dentist.
I used to brag about being retired until someone found out that I was
a handyman. Like I said, I pump septic tanks for a living, when I can
get work.
If my momma hadn't died and left this mobile home for me I would be
homeless.
My family says that I sponge off of them. They called me a bum and a
parasite.
My brother and Daddy drank too much and it killed them. I used to be
an alcoholic, but I had to quit. Now I go around preaching to everyone
else about them being drunks when they drink two beers.
Wonder why I don't have any friends?
I flunked out of trade school. I went to a slow-learner's high
school. Everyone used to pick on me in high school.
I spend most of my spare time at my computer using an old dial up
connection. The rest of the time I watch television 24/7.
My biggest achievement in life was being mentioning in my tiny little
hometown newspaper for spotting something odd in the crossword. It
wasn't a mistake or anything, but it just made me laugh.
Bahahahahhahahahahhahaha!!! I wrote to the newspaper and they
mentioned my name. My relatives all said that was because the
newspaper thought that I was an oddball, but I don't see things that
way.
I am really good at trivia, even if none of the trivia that I know is
important stuff. No one gets my jokes, and no one would ever hire me
to supervise anyone else, not even at the convenience store where I
used to work. But it doesn't matter - I are smarter than them.
No one will give me the respect that I know that I deserve.
Four years ago I was approached by an old woman named Karen Anderson
who talked me into helping her stalk and troll this guy. She had had a
crush on him and he kicked her to the curb. She drove to his town and
followed him around for two days without him knowing it. She is also
jealous of him. Anderson has stalked several other men before.
She lives at:
Karen Anderson
3590 Narrows View Lane NE #102
Bremerton, WA 98310
Anderson and I are both addicted to stalking. We know that what we do
is wrong, and we see this other guy kick our asses all the time, but
we just don't have the willpower to stop stalking him.
I am so jealous, jealous, JEALOUS of that guy that it makes me want to
BURST. I spend all of my time researching what he does, where he
lives. Hell, I even follow his eBay account.
This dude that I hate is popular in his town and community and I HATE
that. So I make up crap about him and his girlfriend and post it to
newsgroups and generally make a nusiance out of myself. Most of what
I make up is a complete figment of my imagination but if I repeat my
lies often enough maybe someone stupid will believe them.
This guy just drives me CRAZY. He's president of a motorcycle club,
he's involved with several charities. Everyone that meets him seems
to like him. I am so damned jealous that I cannot stand it.
Did I mention that I am insanely jealous?
He lives in a warm climate, and I am stuck here in the sticks of
Wisconsin, barely able to afford to keep warm.
He travels all the time and I haven't been out of Wisconsin in years.
He is active, and my health issues keep me from leaving the house.
He motorcycles all over the country and into Mexico and I cannot ride
any more. I hate that. And I hate those damned Mexicans, even though
that doesn't make me a racist because I said so.
I tell people that I am a big, tough Harley dude but the truth is that
I only owned a Sportster - sort of an entry-level Harley - for 6
months before it got repo'd.
I had a good job once. Back in 1998. Then I fucked up, got fired,
and my wife left me. Now I cannot hold down a regular job.
This guy makes more money than I do and that can't be right. I just
know there's something wrong there.
He has a girlfriend that loves him and takes care of him and I haven't
had a date with a woman for over 10 years. And when he was single he
got laid all of the time. Now that's not right either.
My 400 lb. wife - Lori Cmelak - left me. And I miss the little
heffer, even if I did have to smack her a time or two to keep her in
line. But she won't talk to me any more, and I hate that.
What can I possibly do? I am so unhappy. I'd blow my brains out but I
cannot afford the bullets.
Signed, Bill Cmelak of Antigo, Wisconsin

I'm certain I've seen it in the Binaries groups from time to time.
Said multi-LP set was released as a 'bootleg'. I know, because while
I no longer have the LPs, I have it on tape. I forget if it was 10 or 12
of them, but I'll dig them out and post the names of the disks.
"The History and Collected Improvisations of the Mothers of Invention"
was the name, white 'boot' type label, with full track listings.
IMMSMW, the set was $50..back then. Worth every penny.
Audio quality was 'b+ or better', But then again, find it elsewhere.
I'm danger busy the next few weeks, but later I'll rip it to mp3
and post it in the right place. I hope Gail doesn't sue over it. :)

BTW..anyone have some good 'Roxy' era pix of FZ on stage
using the GMT amp I sold him in Boston? I'd love copies.

The title of the bootleg was taken from the unreleased official
10/12/9-record set, but the contents were different. Most of the bootleg
was recorded after 1969.
