I have the standard "classic" Acornsoft BBC disc first release from 1984,
as well as the later Acornsoft disc from 1986 with the standard, 6502
Tube second processor and Master 128 versions all combined.
However, according to the a.f.e faq, Elite was also released in
standalone 6502 Tube and Master 128 versions - before the combined disc
was produced. I've yet to track down proof of either of those, though.
So, my question - does anyone here have either of those releases or any
evidence of their existence?
I'm actually vaguely aware of once possibly seeing a pic of the 6502 Tube
standalone version, but I've not been able to track it down since.
So ... 6502 Tube / Master 128 standalone versions - fact or myth?
Cheers,
Sam.

I have a vague memory that the Tube version was never released
standalone, but can't think where I read it and may be misremembering
something else. It's possible that they decided the combined version
made more sense and went ahead with that instead.
I own a copy of the Master Compact version of the game, on 3.5" disk,
but have never owned a Master Compact so can't comment on whether the
game would've worked on other BBCs with 3.5" drives.
Chris John Jordan, formerly of AcornSoft, would be the most likely
person to know but I'm not sure if he reads this group any more and
I'm not sure if the email address I have for him is current.

nos...@jades.org /is/ a real email address!
I'm not aware of Acornsoft producing standalone versions, but there are a
few mentions on the web of Superior Software doing so.
No proof as yet though :-(

I'm seeing what is around on eBay, as that's usually a good place to
look for proof of things.
The CASSETTE version is selling for $70! Ouch! And I thought prices
were bad in 1985!
The disk version is fetching around $73 (fifty squid). This inflation
business is getting silly.
Looks like they're both the original originals. There are no Superior
Software versions up for grabs at the moment, nor any other BBC
versions of the game.

The fact that it's dated two years before the Master version lends
credence that it might ... but, again, I've not seen any proof.

Certainly they did eventually. The question is whether they released any
versions before then. My suspicion is that Acornsoft did release a 6502
Tube version on it's own ... but maybe not a Master 128 release. Can't
be sure, though!

I assume this is the Superior re-release, yes? I believe only Superior
marketed a release for the Master Compact. I think you'll find that
version will also load on a normal Master 128 as well.

Indeed. I might try and do some web surfing and see if I can come up
with an address ... you're right that he'd probably be the best person to
ask.

Superior doing standalone versions? I'm as certain as I can be that they
did not. I have original adverts from when they re-launched Elite, and
they had clearly re-released the combined Acornsoft disc. Got any links
to suggest otherwise?

Ahh, no. That's what they've been listed as ... not what they've
actually sold for. ;) I've certainly seen that £50 disc version on eBay
a number of times. The seller is being exceptionally optimistic ...
It's possible they saw an original Acornsoft combined disc go for that
sort of price - as they're quite rare - and mistakenly thinks their disc
version is the same. Both the standard cassette and disc versions
regularly go for a lot less than the listed prices you've quoted ...
Sam.
Phew! Thank Commander Jameson for that! I was getting scared that
someone had swapped the UK water supply for something with a bit more
buzz.
The thing that amazes me, especially with the auctions set at stupid prices,
is often they don't even offer the complete package :-(
