In Chapter 31 of Dune, Chani was described as the girl who embarrassed
Paul. What was it that she did to embarrass Paul? She simply said: "You
were as noisy as a shai-hulud in rage. And you took the most difficult path
up here."

by that simple remark? Was it because Chani was a girl?

Yes, but hadn't Gurney given him criticism of this type without Paul

But he had already seen her in his dreams many times. I suppose you can fall in love with someone that you only have met in a dream, especially the kind that he had. I am not sure if he already had had a dream at that time of them being lovers, but I remember that he did have such dream before they actually did.
