But I digress. I was planning on avoiding the Dominance for a little
longer, but last night I had a bizzare dream. I was looking at a list of
all the newsgroups available on my server (starting with a.aaa.aardvarks
or whatever is waaayy at the beginning), and desparately trying to find
AFD. Except that in the dream, reading was an incredible effort, and
typing anything was next to impossible. Hissing in frustration, I
managed to get "alt." into the search box, narrowing it down to all
6.02 x 10^23 "alternative" groups, before waking.
I may be wrong, but I interpret this as some kind of rebellion from my
sub- or semiconscious mind (or possibly just my left brain?) against my
sabbatical from this group. Since I have more than enough problems trying
to keep my id under control, I thought I had best show up. So um...
hi, everyone. :-)
I also just turned my keyboard upside down and shook it, in an effort
to get the coffee which I just spilled on it out, and it SPONTANEOUSLY
MADE an unhappy cartoon compu-unicorn, like this -=[ I mean, woah! Is
that like an omen, or what?

Eek. That's frustrating. That's also why I saved this ng on my deja

This is why I need a newsreader that allows me to PROOFREAD things before
sending them out. The above is my jerry-rigged way of figuring how wide
70 characters are, so my posts don't appear word-wrapped in stupid,
fragmented
ways. I'm running a rather old (but reasonably stable) version of Win95,
and the stuff that comes with it just doesn't cut it. I'm half-way tempted
to download MS Outlook Express, which was great, but I don't want a
program that will insinuate itself into my hard drive and try to take over
my desktop even MORE than MSIE 3.0.
(Forte Agent fans who are about to jump in can save themselves the
effort.
I have Free Agent, and I'm pretty unimpressed.)

Yikes! I'll say! :-p You must have more dedication to this NG than I.

I think so. "Keh'tel" does sound vaugely familiar, but that might just

Reading and writing is almost always that way in dreams. I think the
literate part of the brain must be inaccessible during the dream
state, or something. I once had a dream in which I spent who knows how
long repeatedly attempting to sign my name on a guest list, and I just
couldn't get it right.

I try to give people I greet a little extra attention. Everyone else just
says, "Hi! I don't know you! Here's choiocolate!" I used to do that, but
I realized that if it's just by rote it's not really a very welcoming
greeting. I figure, if I see someone I want to say hi to, I'll give them
attention.

*giggles* Now... I don't want to step on too many tails, and I do

Wellll, now that you want to ANALYZE it... ;-D I dunno. I think that
unicorns are pretty neat, and OUGHT to be in Alfandra, even if one drops
by only rarely. When the very very first discussions about doing a major
overhaul of the DC began, I recall, there was a very cool unicorn-spirit
poster here. I've forgotten her name (of course), but I thought to
myself that she really seemed like a *real* unicorn, not a unicorn
fan or a person role-playing a unicorn character. This is when the
issue of the "reality" tag really started. We were both non-dragons,
and so D+++ would never do, but we didn't feel any less *real* than,
say, Baxil or Jia. (Who also *ought* to haul their butts in here! >;-j)
We actually had a discussion about this in the ng and via email.
Ahh... I should stop now before I drown in sentiment. ;-p
> She huggles HK again and runs off to bring her back to solid in the
> Portrait...
GrrrRRRRRRRRrrr!!! You did that on PURPOSE?!? By sheer serendipity,
I felt like looking at the AFD portrait today, but I couldn't remember
the .cjb address, so I found *your* pages through Altavista. I
saw the weird transparency of some of the figures (including yours
truly), and assumed that you must have been using some weird beta
version of whatever software you used to combine the various pictures
in the version of the AFD Portrait on your web page. And I was
going to write to you, personally, to tell you that I am NOT 5'6".
I'm 6'1", or 186cm, whichever you prefer. I logged into my account
on the .cjb page and corrected the info myself, at least for THAT
version of the portrait.
*tearing of hair and rolling of eyes* I can't beLEEEEEEEVE you would
slowly erase my picture, Hespa!! Yarrrrgh! You KNOW I *always* come
back, no matter how long I've been gone! It's like some kind of
curse to return here that I can't escape!
*evil, thoughtful look* I can see that I'll have to harrass you
regularly UNTIL THE END OF TIME if this portrait-easing business
continues. Mua ha...
I agree, I've heard that elsewhere. But I don't usually have THAT much
trouble reading or writing in dreams. I can't think of too many examples,
but I often dream about fantastic libraries, filled with all kinds of
books which don't exist in this world. (Yes. That's what I fantasize
about. Libraries.) Or there was the time when an historical figure in
my dream gave me a letter written in French. I could barely make
out what he was trying to say-- but that was the foreign-language-that-
I-don't-understand-much-at-all part, not the act of reading per se.
I did note, even with my crude grasp of French, that all of the
verbs were written in the infinitive. (The historical figure didn't
speak French, either.) I snickered, and he looked discomfited. >:-)
> Hi! :=} I myself probably haven't made more than ten posts here in the
> past year, but it's nice to see you around!
Well, I'm truly flattered that you feel that way! :-) I hope that
you can stick around. I'm working on some ideas for interesting
questionnaire posts-- you know, the usual stuff about non-humanity, etc.
I haven't done any kind of scientific survey, but it seems as though
an unusual number of Alfandrans describe themselves as R++ or even
R+++, but they don't seem to spend much time talking about it. It is
shyness, or do they feel so completely comfortable in their (presumably)
human incarnations that it's just not an issue...?
(My god, am I secretly longing for more whining and talk of
depression!? >;-j)

Heh. Yeah, I like this campus. T1 in every room. *grins big* I'll be
spoiled completely by the time I get back home. My dad's got a really
slow connection (I can't remember the speed). So Deja works just fine for
me, except that occasionally it goes down and comes back with every
thread split into about 12 new ones. Blah to that!

Especially when they're completely ridiculous, like the malt ball the
size of a house. I know giving food is a tradition here, but at least be
creative! I used to try to come up with something new every time, but I
very quickly realized that I would eventually greet someone with eggplant
casserole, so I stopped trying. Now I say Hi. The food thing has gotten
old. Except there's someone, I don't remember who, here who gives newbies
and returnees baklava. No that's creative enough that it never gets old!

Get slrn. It's the best I've ever seen. It's much quicker to use than
(Free) Agent, takes less disk space than OE or Netscape, it runs well on
a 486DX2, etc. Its mouse support is poor, but still it's more usable
than most of the other readers...
Or I've used too much old QWK readers, like BlueWave...

No, just better! :P Nah, just kidding. Actually, I don't like mine

It's a...DEMONUNICORN!! Except it has three horns, so it can't be a
unicorn now. Drat. It's a tricorn. It's a hat. Duh. *smirk*
Hmmm, well, I've used slrn (non-GUI version) on my unix account, and
while it beats tin and trn IMO, I still don't like it. ;-p Of course,
I have no clue about how to customize the .slrnrc to my needs. This
is what I want in a newsreader:
1)The ability NOT to group messages by thread.
2)The ability to quickly sort messages by subject, author, or date
received.
3)The ability to easily mark all, some, or none of the messages
as read.
4)The ability to easily toggle between all/unread messages display.
5)The ability to see how my posts will appear and edit them, if
necessary, before sending them to the server.
6)The ability to mung my email address.
7) (optional) a GUI text editor for composing messages.
I don't think that's asking too much, but Forte and every unix
newsreader that I've tried doesn't make the grade. Outlook Express,
for all its known bugs and security problems, DOES meet my
requirements. Suddenly it's OK for all the Cool Computer People to
praise MSIE 5.x, which I personally think sucks for its ActiveX
security hazard if nothing else, but MS news/mail programs are still
laughable. ;-p

*giggle* God, how I love that quote...
I dunno, at that speed, you are usually loading pages faster than the
other computer can send the information. It's good if people want to
download things from your computer (for instance, I can often download a
4 minute song from Napster off a computer with a T3 connection in about
40 seconds), but it doesn't allow you to do much else that I know of
faster than a T1 connection. At least not enough faster to notice. A
second or two here and there. Not that I know much about this to begin
with.
Fair enough. I shall consider my breath saved. ;=8)
I was going to recommend SLRN as the next option, but you've already
tried that, so howzabout Gravity? If you've got a few shekels to
spend, it's apparently rather good, and a 30-day trial version is
available free if you want to try it out first.
Oh, and welcome back! *huggles*

It depends on two things: 1) The speed of your line, and 2) the speed
of the other side. (Plus a little bit is where in the world the site
is, but the first two items seem to have more effect)
Basically you're limited to the speed of the other side if they're
slower. Common sense really... You can have the fastest connection in
the world, but what good does it do when the sites you visit are
slower?

Um, well, discounting the "pouncehuggle," I think I've received about
three "greenberry pies" from Hespa. ;-) I'm hopeing they're something
like gooseberry pies.
I did not know that Image was a UK dwa- er, dragon. I had heard
rumors that Image (along with many others who aren't on the NG anymore)
had disappeared to #afd or Alfandria Muck. But since **I'M** not
going to use IRC or go on any MU*s, **THEY** need to post to AFD
once in awhile!! ;-p
> *wavies to Im if she's reading*

[look, I'm facing east already ;-)]
Hmmm. I have WordPad and Notepad. While I much prefer dragging
and dropping text to vi's obscure "yank" and "mark" commands, I
miss the ability to quickly move to and/or append text to the
beggining and end of the current line. And typing dd is quickly than
highlighting the current line with the mouse and pressing delete.
I can't say that I've ever tried emacs, since none of the telnet
programs that I use to connect to my unix account fully support it.
But I do find vi pretty speedy and powerful. I use it to clean
up misspelled words, broken links, etc. on my web pages all the
time. And when my computer is down (which happens alarmingly
often), it writes my email and (rare) Usenet posts. :-)

Yeah. And I've found a new pal who has a gigantic collection
of the cheesy TSR novels that I crave, and he lets me borrow them! ;-)
Finishing a novel recently which had a (clever, albeit evil) dragon
in it as a semi-major character prolly influnced my dreams as well.
But I really do think of AFD often, whether or not I'm here.
Besides, no one writes me email anymore, but at least my posts tend
to generate a few responses... ;-p

vi rulez!! :-)
Everything related to dragons is fair game, not to mention a
heck of a lot of things NOT related to dragons. ;-) There have been
discussion threads in the past about dragons in dreams. This is
primarily a "social" newsgroup, and as you may have noticed, there's
a whole lot of sillyness always going on-- foodfights, roleplaying
as dragon (or other fantasy) characters, deliberately silly
arguments, etc. There's not a great deal of "on topic" posts, but
at least this is a pretty troll-free region on Usenet, and posters
being upbraided for drifting from the subject of dragons is all
but unheard of.
And then there are people who believe that they are dragons (or
other nonhuman creatures) in spirit. There's nothing that makes that
incompatible with participating in the fluffier discussions. ;-)
PLEASE feel free to start a conversation about dragons... why you
feel drawn to them, how they appear in your dreams, whatever. This
is a very friendly group, with a generally high signal-to-noise
ratio. Have you visited AFD's homepage, http://www.dragonfire.org ?
Lurk for a bit to get the feel of it, if you'd like, but don't be
afraid to join in!

I can understand not wanting to use many of the MUCKs that there are, but
what's the problem with using Alfandria MUCK?
IRC is a different environment altogether which might not be to everyone's

"I'm sorry, Happy, but I've got set rules for how long someone can be
gone before they fade, and I can't just break them for you because I
know you come back!" She backs away a little in case her friend os
planning to yell again.

"Now *that* sounds like a good idea! Just make sure you post Here at
least once a month, and you'll always be fully visible!" *g*

I've seen Baxil more than I have Jia... I haven't seen any posts from
Jia for about a month...

I'm planning on doing even better :=8) I'm working on a way to pull
the information directly from the db, rather than inputting it for
every portrait :=8) In which case, changes made to the profile will be
reflected on the portrait as well :=8)

*grin* Just so many ideas that I've had for the portrait, that are
often beneficial for the portrait itself :=8)
Lessee here, I've added the little blue box that shows the name and
size of a being, I created the profile scripts, and in those scripts I
should have no problem adding one that grabs the size directly from
the database. (a project for tomorrow, got work today...)
It's fun too. I know it wouldn't hold my attention if it wasn't fun
