And nobody explained that the gag was thought by Douglas Adams :-(
I dunno. Adams said on multiple occasions that the cookie incident really
happened to him. His version appears in 1984 and the oldest urban legend
version on Snopes.com is from 1986. There are similar stories from the
early 1900s, according to Scopes, but they aren't that close.
There aren't any other incidents of Adams using gags that weren't his, at
least not that I've noticed, so I tend to believe it actually did happen to
him.
