We got three over the air stations when I was a farm kid. One was
consistently good, one iffy, and the last watchable on a good day.

filled in but there must be a thousand. There are paid, duplicate,
analog and HD but still maybe 500 open to watch. Think there are 100 in
Spanish.
Don't like what's on? Go to On Demand where there are thousands of
shows to watch.
Same when I was a kid in the Philadelphia area. Three channels out of
Philly and then a PBS channel out of Wilmington.
