Review of DEVO’s DC concerts!
Sunday, November 15, 2009:
The opening in act was JP, Inc. a stand-up music comedy act, by a guy
who works with Mark Mothersbaugh on some of the TV shows DEVO scores.
I is a “retired musical superstar who is back with his own TV
Network!” He stands on stage and sings the theme songs of all the
shows on the Network while DVD animations play on the screen. Very
DEVO from its anti-media standpoint as he mocked the TV shows that the
regular networks call “entertainment” as well as the “news” and
“public service announcements.”
A lot of misses, but some really good hits with his satire of “Big
Media.” He’s would make a great X-Day act.
DEVO came out and performed “Are We Not Men” live. Great concert! They
tried to the best of their ability to recreate the stage act from that
era as well. Of course, seeing that they are now old enough to be the
Parents and possibly Grand Parents of most readers of alt.slack as
well alt.fan.devo, they were a little less animated then “back in the
day”
The encore was “Gates of Steel” and “Smart Patrol/ Mr. DNA”. After
that, the band left the stage, but the crowd stayed put! Clapping and
chanting “DEVO! DEVO!” at the top of their lungs. These made the
Spudboys come back and do something the DEVO has NEVER DONE BEFORE!
Perform in Street clothes! Mark came out as Booji Boy and sang
“Beautiful World”, and that was that!
Monday, November 16, 2009:
The opening act was JP. Inc. again.
But this night was “Freedom of Choice” being performed on stage. It
was also the only time in both concerts that they played “Whip It!”
Mark had to use cue cards to sings some of the songs like “Snow Ball”
and “That’s Pep”, you could s him glancing at the floor of the stage.
The Encore was “Secret Agent Man” and “Beautiful World” with Booji Boy
again on Stage, wearing a hat that they were given at the White House
that day. Obama was in Asia so I guess they just got the a “Special
Tour.”
Booji Boy told a story of a how sacred Booji was when he first got to
LA. But a big black Limo pulled up with Michael Jackson in the back.
He took Booji to the Neverland Ranch for a sleep over.
And how Michael Jackson was the only person who in Los Angeles who did
NOT scare Booji Boy.
That ended the show. I hung out and got my “Monkey Portraits” Book
signed by Mark. Bob1 was eating s slice of Pizza and wanted to sign it
too. But as he went off to wash his hands of the grease, he got side
tracked and never got to sign it.
As for the group, they sounded great. Bob2 looked like he was really
tired at the end of the first concert. But the songs on “Q/A” require
a lot more jumping around on his part and he is really showing his
age. He looked more relaxed in the “Freedom of Choice” concert.
Bob1 was playing his restored “Spud Guitar” on the second concert.
That guitar really does sound great! And unlike in 2004, Bob1 looked
like he was having a whole lot more fun this time. He actually broke
all the guitar strings n the “cut back” guitar he plays in “Smart
Patrol” during the solo!
Jerry was great. He did mess up the bass on one of the “Q/A” songs,
but only because the small stage at the 9:30 Club caused him and one
of the Bobs to bump into each other.
Josh is now the EQUAL to Allan Myers. His drum work was 100% better
then on the ’96 Lollapalooza DVD.
The 9:30 Club is a great venue to see DEVO. Large enough to get a good
crowd, small enough to be intimate and actually SEE the band!
Oh! And Michael Pilmer says there WILL and tour this spring for the
new CD!

wow! JP INC!!!
JP inc started up here in seattle as pleaseeasaur oh so many years
ago. i used to follow his shows fairly religiously. very friendly,
very funny, very nice guy. him and devo would make an awesome pairing
for a show!

he's definitely got some range. the videos are a new part of his
act. JP used to have another guy behind some screens working 2
overhead projectors with various song-related imagery dancing across.
it was after he left the picture last year that pleaseeasaur became JP
inc.

That is SO much more appropriate, if you think about it. Or should I
say, if you thimk about it.

The idea was to play their old LP's in order. SOme of the songs on
Freedom of Choice they have not played in 30 years.

Eeeeh. Thats was not a guy. It was cute petite lady....
She and her taller female friend came to Sunday's show dressed up in
huntering outfits with safety vests that said..."Don't Shoot! I am a
man " on the back.
They MOnday show had them dressed in retro 1940's outfits (with nylons
that had the seam down the back) and retro hast that looked like
Energy Domes.
They were let in early and the shorter one was given that task of
showing tha tracks being played. The other taller one was almots 6 ft
tall and probally could not fit in the costume.

will be a new DEVO album next year.
Also hoping that there will be lots of groupies, but obviously not the
same groupies from 30 years ago.
