Two things:
1) A friend of mine's girlfriend saw Conan at a restaurant this
week. Yes, he was with the new girlfriend. Apparently, they had a really
nice time.
2) I know how we all know and love the pages for "Late Night," who
range from the rare nice ones, to the competent, to the shrill Nazis who
seem to be in abundance.
Well, I went to the "Late Show" this week. I haven't been to a
Letterman taping since he was on NBC. I haven't watched a Letterman show
in about seven years. The audience coordinators for the show contacted
where I work to get a block of people who come to the show. Since it
didn't inovlve any work on my part, and it got me out of work early one
day, I went along. The entire experience put the NBC experience in
perspective.
In order to pick up your tickets for "The Late Show," you have to
wait in three separate lines. In each line, you get a speech from the CBS
pages. They spend this time laying down all the rules, and saying that it
is the audience's responsiblity for a good show, because if the audience
is dead, the show will be dead, and Dave feeds off the audience. Nothing
like starting off by blaming the audience for failure. If we are not
enthusiastic about it, apparently we shouldn't go in. One of our group
had showed up late because she had lost her wallet, and was really upset,
and they gave her crap over not being happy enough.
So then you go away and come back later to line up before the show
again. Then you get a *huge* speech by the pages about what you should
do. We actually got told we should laugh at everything, and if you were
on the line about whether a joke was funny or not, we should laugh anyway.
They also made Dave out to be a psycho creep. They said that as soon as
we get inside, Dave can hear everything that goes on, so we should be
pumped and positive.
On the way in, you have to go through a guantlet of pages who tell
you have a great time and be pumped and loud for the show. After you sit
down, the warm-up guy comes out. He tells about two jokes, and rthen
gives us more rules. We can make some kind of sounds, but not others, and
he told us we had to do certain things and cheer at certain points just
because. There was some more lecturing. The band came out (which was
awful, BTW), and then the pages in the aisle lectured us some more. Dave
came out briefly, and then the show started.
The show itself was pretty funny, but not as good as Dave used to
be. It is very much as mediocre as I remembered it, but Dave had his
moments.
So, while the NBC employees can sometimes be a bitch, it can be so
much worse.

***Thanks Senor Damone. I had very little desire to see a taping of Letterman
anyways...I've been hearing how much of an old farty bitch he's been. Plus, I
hear the Late Show studio is virtually as cold as Antarctica (much colder than
Conan's).

Thanks for trying to put a positive spin on this, Damone. It's utterly
pointless, but thanks. Everyone hates her. I think that if Conan digs
her, she is probably really smart and funny.

They suck ass. I miss the days when it was a rocking four-piece---
before Paul started using horn samples all the time.

For some odd reason, I'm really glad Conan has a girlfriend.. even
though I really *heart* Conan (Yes, I'm the typical
drool-over-every-move groupie). I guess it's cause I don't really care
how she's like, as long as he's happy and getting some nookie.
My main fantasy involving Conan is just holding his hand and talking
about deep personal issues on a moonlit beach. It's quite sad, really.
And it won't happen anyway.. so I might as well wish him well with his
new squeeze.
Although I'm still keeping up that poster on my wall... :)

Yeah, when I went (that one time) we had some pretty cool pages. I
didn't like "bond" with any of them.. I was trying to save my nerve and
my oxygen up for my "Conan-Moment".. but they were really nice and
joking around with us and all.

I am too. Although I am female and I think Conan is hilarious, I would never
wish him to be single and miserable. . . until he marries Yves, of course. ;)
Who are we to judge that perspective of his life? We can't. As for the whole
Letterman escapade, all I can say is yeah. They charge you for tickets as if
you were seeing a concert, with the really good seats being expensive. It's not
first come first serve like our buddy Cone-y.

Damone-I read the Letterman NG as well,and this occurs a lot. They tape
two shows on Thursdays-one NG member said that when he/she went,the
audience was told that there were two scripts-if the audience wasn't
responsive enough,then they would save the funnier script for the
second audience.
Of course,whenever a joke bombs,it's either the audience's fault,or you
just blame the writers. Letterman does that frequently-he'll be in the
middle of a sketch and then says how much it sucks or how unfunny it
is.

I've heard that as well. That is insane. The home audience can tell
sincere laughter from fake laughter.

One time I read that an audience member asked a question,Dave
answered,and sneeered,"Good question." Good lord. And they always show
the same clips-"Dave Talks to Kids" or something like that.

I watch it every night,but it is not my favorite late night show-I
don't have to tell you which one is. :-) Dave is funny,but the bits
are pathetic.
It's a shame-it used to be hilarious. Oh well. But don't you dare
criticize the show in the NG.

Should be "bit," not sketch.
And it just occured to me that of all the late night talk shows,Late
Night is the only one which regularly shows stand-up comics. I don't
know about Leno,but I haven't seen a stand-up comic on Late Show
since...well,a very long time.

The Nazis page stories tend to be exaggerated. I've seen people go out of
their way to do the wrong thing and when a page says something, the page is
the horrible person. No matter where one is there will always be the good,
the bad and the ugly; Why should NBC be any different?

Once in awhile though there'll be the Conan "urban legends". He doesn't fair
too well either. I've heard enough that I even had a dream about the LN
staff hanging a monster Conan (naked, furry with fangs; like a red-haired
gorilla) by the foot upside down in the "Hangman" position. He asked me to
get him down; I hesitated and woke up before I made my decision. I guess it
means I'm not sure if he's a monster or not.

Unfortunately, it can be better. I know people and have friends that have
gone to both LN and Rosie O'Donnell Show tapings and hands down they
preferred Rosie. Granted they are all female (I not sure if Rosie is most
men cup o' tea) and they aren't in love with Conan (one thinks he's a
ghoul). I 've heard that show gives out gifts. Gifts! GIFTS!!!! And food.
Food! FOOD!!!! They say she is very lively and interacts with the audience
during tapings. The only draw back is that the ticket system is by lottery
for both stand-by and mailing in so there is no guarantee of getting in
either way. But the wait on line for Rosie is so much less than Late Night.
Granted Rosie is a daytime talk show under ABC which has a more family
friendly atmosphere than a late night talk show but still the red carpet
treatment is greatly appreciated. I need to go a Rosie taping myself so I
can make a personal judgment though. I also would like to see a taping of
Saturday Night Live and one day believe it or not I want to see a taping of
The Tonight Show.

You know, I saw the late show when Dave hosted it about 10 years ago and it
was nothing like Damone described--just normal, wait in line, pages lead you
to your seats, a little warm up, we were encouraged to be responsive but not
exorted or threatened to react in a certain way.
The Ed Sullivan Theater is much larger than the LN studio, I guess a bad
audience could have a much bigger impact on the tone of the show than it
would in the tiny LN studio. However, it's disturbing to hear that Dave is
so insecure he's got to have people laughing and screaming and flipping out
in order to function. And it seems so anti-dave or at least anti the dave
I've known in the past, to encourage phoney laughing and applause <sigh>.
Let's just hope, kids, that Conan never moves to 11:30!! See what happens?

ANyhoo, I watch Dave everynight, and I still think he's pretty funny. What
Conan is doing is a different thing, and to be honest I don't compare the
two, they each have their charms. Conan is definitely on the "cutting edge"
these days, but I gotta say, Dave has been laugh out loud funny lately
especially during the campaign.
As far as the ng, uhmmm ditto, I lurk over there but rarely post...afcob is
a lot more laid back (could be cause afcob skews young) and fun. Don't dare
post over there if you haven't watched the show every single night for the
last 20 years, you risk being raked over the coals...and criticizing "daddy"
too harshly could get ya in a heap of trouble too....
