OK, I know I don't need a tablet computer because I have a wonderful
Sony Vaio laptop, but I've had an irrational lust for one since I saw
the first iPad ad on TV. I gave in and bought an Acer Iconia Tab (500
series). It runs Windows 7 and ethernet and it's just so cute I can
hardly stand it.
Of course, I'm ruining the lightweight portability by getting an
external DVD burner and an external hard drive, but I'm a firm
believer in backups and I want to watch movies. I also bought an
external battery to make things easier; waiting rooms rarely have
convenient power receptacles and the staff gets so excited when you
start moving the furniture.
I spent a lot of time looking at tablet computers before I committed
to this one. I really wanted Windows 7 and I needed ethernet. The
Kindle Fire I got for Christmas really got me wanting color and a
touch screen.
Incidentally, don't believe the implication that a Fire will work with
whispernet; my USB2 to wifi gadget is wandering toward my house in a
brown truck. We came to a compromise we could live with, which is
that the wireless is only for the Fire and I physically unplug it when
I'm not using it. This isn't as much fun as going to Starbucks, but
it's a lot cheaper and lower calorie.

I have a whole TV set, on a thumb-drive-sized USB (minus the screen,
of course) Used to work at the HeathKit Electronics store.
Knowing what goes into these critters makes me even more awed than yer
avg. consumer—they _expect_ miracles!

1401 and the rest of that family bar the 1460 but including the 7010.

The original description of the Fire, changed about twenty minutes
after I called and complained, allowed the reader to infer that
Whispernet could be used. What they actually meant was just one step
up from sneakernet, that material could be downloaded to a computer
and then transferred to the fire by USB cable (cable not included).
They had just worded it ambiguously.
Speaking of cables, the Fire wall wart and cable are completely
incompatible with the Kindle 2 and Kindle DX. I believe they are
compatible with the newer versions of Kindle, but I've got too much
invested in my four older Kindles to buy anything new.

That's why I wrote a correction to my original post saying the DX also uses Whispernet.

It probably will accept most of your many cables. I use it for my Kindle Touch.
