The concept of an "arcology" is a common one in Science Fiction. These
are generally set in the industrial West - Niven placed his in LA,
Robocop's writers placed theirs in Detroit.
Now, a Chinese company is planning to build one in a field near the
capital of Hunan province. In seven months. They plan to build modules
in a factory, and bolt them together on site into a 220 story tall
city. They claim that going vertical reduces the CO2 footprint of a
typical urban chinese citizen from 5.5 tons to 2 tons, and consumes
