I was labelling a CD and my marker slipped and made a black sharpie
line on the front of John's new computer case. I've spent 10 minutes
scrubbing at it and a lot of it's come off but you can still see where
the line is. :( Anybody know how do I get it off the case without
destroying the finish?

Lesson - always take the cd OUT of the drive before you try to write
on it!

See what this site says:

www.wikihow.com/Remove-Permanent-Marker-from-a-Smooth-Surface

It claims the methods work on any non-porous surface.

Mr. Clean Magic Erasers take almost anything off almost anything -
test on an inconspicuous part of the case first, but they should work
well. Don't forget to dampen and squeeze out the water before using.

I absolutely love them. They're wonderful for taking grime off
painted doorframes and light switch plates, graffiti off windows,
marks off floors; they even work on our stained wood door frames and
walls. The dog used to lie against the knotty-pine-panel hall closet
door, and standing at the other end of the hall you could see the
darker area on the door. A Magic Eraser took it off with minimal
rubbing. I kind of miss that spot now, but the door looks great.

I was going to say "incorporate it into a larger design", but this seems
to be a better method.

There were some good ideas already, although with plastics you never
know...so, the backup is to find some stencils, ask him which pattern
he likes best, and personalize the case.

There are no miracles in Miracle Whip, and it's almost impossible to
bake in an EZ Bake Oven, but Magic Erasers really might be magic.

Sharpies are really useful for touch-ups to bleach specks on
clothing. And they come in a nice range of colors also.

Mr. Clean Magic Erasers know no geographical boundaries. I only wish
they worked as well on local NJ government as they do on walls.

Screw your courage to the sticking-place.

Might work better than Magic Eraser and it'll at least cover the Spot
spot.

Ethanol will probably work and is quite unlikely to damage the finish
(no guarantees). Rubbing alcohol will probably work and and probably
won't damage the finish. Acetone will almost certainly work, but must
likely *will* damage the finish.

Sharpie ink is alcohol based. Use rubbing alcohol (the 90% kind
works best) unless it would destroy the case.

There's a lot of crafters who make great use of sharpies followed up
with rubbing alcohol on dominoes. Can get all sorts of really nifty
effects.

Thanks for the suggestions about the Magic Eraser. I bought one of
them years ago because I wanted to clean our revolting grout (it's
been grey-brown ever since we moved into the apartment, but it wasn't
meant to be!) It did NOT work for that purpose - the first few inches
of grout destroyed the eraser without much effect so I tossed the
remaining one into the cleaning closet and forgot about it. I dug it
out and a few swipes later the computer case is as good as new. DH
probably wouldn't have ever noticed the mark, but I'm glad I could get
it off!

I've got a set of three different brown Sharpies, sold for furniture
touch-ups.

Squirt it with Windex.
(Proven effective at end-of-year cleanup in daughter's 1st grade classroom)
