If one is polite, one keeps one's tweeting, texting and emailing under
cover. People sit around the table at meetings and they all have
Blackberries or smart phones in their laps and are carrying on
conversations like crazy. I swear to the Goddess, though, you look
down the table and it appears as if everyone in the room is beating
off.
I always have a Flip video camera with me, and it is only because I
don't want to lose every single client that I haven't taped one of
these circle jerks and posted it on youtube.

There are certain manager where I work who not only flat-out forbid
anyone to do texting during meetings; they even forbid laptops since
people are doing email under cover of "taking notes." Unfortunately,
those managers are getting fewer and farther between and the new
contingent are worse than teenagers about rudeness in meetings.

The kinds of meetings where this happens are at companies that expect
this level of employee to be multi-tasking all the time. Sounds silly,
but if these people didn't do other things while at meetings, they'd
never get anything done.
These folks go from meeting to meeting all day long. I'd hang myself.
I hate meetings and we have very few at our offices, but we get
dragged to client meetings all the time.

ummm ... I am not sure I understand how the miscarriage wouldn't be a
bigger distraction -- even an upset stomach is likely to cause you to
squirm in your seat and look pale and make sounds other than bland
agreement.

I'm in one of those companies. My most memorable week of meetings had 36.5
hours of meetings. Of course, a lot of those were in the evening with
overseas suppliers, so I did have a bit of time during the day to do real
work.

Does it drive you nuts? Honestly, how does anything get done? When do
you have to analyze or write up or even organize projects when the day
and evening get sucked into meeting vacuums?
I really didn't mind it so much when I was younger (more energetic)
and before I had kids, as my social life was very much entangled with
business buddies, but been there, done that, I guess.
