Oh, very elegant looking kitty! The shape of a Siamese, with that shiny
black coat.
Dana
Good kitty!

Oh, nice looking cat. In fact, we have a black cat with a white spot
on his chest, very similar in appearance to your guy, only quite a bit
er, chunkier.
Not that Spike's fat, exactly, but he's sort of muscle-bound. And he
eats every damn thing in his path. Anyway, nice looking cat.

Cute kitty!
But obviously needs to be fed more.
Practically wasting away.
Poor starving kitty!

Yup, my husband named him. When we adopted him, his name was Daunte
(after Mr Culpepper) which didn't fit him at all (and he was just a
kitten, so we were able to change it without a problem). My husband is
into trains: model trains, real trains, train museums, etc. So we've
had cats called Chessie, Lionel, and now Spike, which my husband likes
to pretend is a railroad name. Spike and I know better.

Yeah, been on the wrong end of *that* addytood a few times...

Ooh, Lionel -- good idea if I ever get another cat! (My current cat is
named Chessie.)

Would another choice be "Ray-O-Vac"? I seem to remember a cat used in an
advertisement for a battery.

Nope, it is/was the Eveready black cat with 9 lives:

Oh, go on -- get another now! Chessie's probably lonely.

I intend to -- if I can ever afford to move to a bigger place. (Come

Let's try that again...how about "from the Front Parlour"; much nicer
than a roomette or even a room.

I take it you have seen the advertisement with Peake back from the war
-- leg bandaged, medals on his chest. Note that the kittens are
looking up at him adoringly, but Chessie can't even be bothered to get
out of bed for the homecoming. ("My" Chessie is somewhat more active
than that.)

Midnight looks almost exactly like the kitty we rescued last week...
she's at the animal shelter just now getting spayed and shotted and
then she'll be coming home to live with us. (We wanted to let the
shelter find her a good home but they said that she was going to be
put down in three days because 'nobody wants a black cat'! So we had
no choice other than to adopt her ourselves... well, we could have
just turned around and taken her home again unofficially but for the
$70 adoption fee they'll spay her and give her her shots etc, and it
would have cost a lot more to take her to the vet ourselves!)
Here's a photo of Tessie...
http://community.webshots.com/photo/2088662440015899315FqJYcT
You can't see it in the photo but she's got a tiny little patch of
white on her tummy in front her her hind legs, and a little streak on
her throat that looks like she brushed against a wet paintbrush...

Why does nobody want a black cat? I've known lots of people who have
had black cats, me among them. Always struck me as rather popular,
actually, despite the old superstition.

One for each point of your pentagram? ;)

That one I've missed, I think. And I can't remember which pictures
were on the C&O calendars I used to get, but various Peake pics have
appeared in the magazines from time to time; the one that comes to mind
is his "formal" in-uniform portrait.

Hey, I don't need no steenkin' pentagram. No, it's just coincidence.
Cats tend to accumulate at our house.
Mary
It sounds like a load of hooey to me too! But somebody said that all
black cats tend to look alike so they don't stand out in people's
attention like a Siamese or a ginger tabby... and somebody else said
that black cats tend to be very popular in October but not at other
times of the year. Personally I think ALL cats are equally attractive
(except I don't much like calicos) and black cats are very handsome...

I didn't see Mary's post so I went and examined my kill filters - at
some point I accidentally made a perpetual global kill filter for any
post by 'Mary'... oops. It's gone now, and while I was there I deleted
a bunch of others that served a shortterm purpose...
Our calico has actually started to mellow somewhat. She still thinks
I'm a chew toy, but a couple of times a week she'll sit with me and
submit to being petted like a normal house cat.
http://valkyrierider.us/photos/catnap.jpg
The only drawback to black cats is their tendency to crawl into dark places
and close their eyes, so you don't realize they're there.
Wow, I think I just used and spelled all iterations of "there/their/they're"
correctly.

LOL - You mean like "The two of us were going to the store, too"?
Harder are the contractions...its/it's, whose/who's, your/you're.
People who misuse those make me nuts.
That statement, of course, guarantees that sometime in the next 24 hours, I
will misuse them all.
