I won 16 bucks at a dog race in South Dakota. I lost my mind once, but
I don't recall exactly what the gamble was
> 10. What was the last gift card you bought? Who was it for and where was it

I bought several gift cards for a Benefit for Volunteers of America.
One was from a Book store, one from a coffee shop and one from a yarn
store.
When's Black Friday? Whenever it is, we surely don't have a Black
Friday sale, because we don't have a Black Friday.

My ex lived next door when I met her.
> 3. What is your favorite Beatles song?
I really couldn't say, this sort of thing depends on the mood I'm in.
Contenders include A Hard Day's Night, Only a Northern Song, Hey
Bulldog, and the medley (from Mean Mr. Mustard onwards) on Abbey Road.

For a single bet, $2 on a roulette table in Vegas, on a single number.
A return of about $50 on the whole weekend, with roulette (around $75)
and blackjack ($10) winnings, and slot machine losses.

No, no, no. I don't do Black Friday.

On the phone, actually. We worked for the same company and had to talk

The Super Bowl.

I don't gamble. It's not a moral stance, it's that gambling is entirely
uninteresting to me.
> 7. Have you ever cheated in a relationship? What's your definition of

No. Cheating is cheating. If you're in a committed relationship
(acknowledged by both parties, and not existing solely in the
imagination of one person) then I think either physical cheating OR
emotional cheating is wrong.
> 8. What is the best meal you've ever eaten?
Goodness me, who knows? I've had lots of good meals.
> 9. What's the most valuable thing you own that's inside your house?
The most expensive is probably stuff like the furniture. The most
valuable is some things that were Mom's. She gave me her string of
pearls, and some silver jewelry in the shape of dolphins. I don't wear
any of it often, but it's very valuable to me.

Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving, which is the beginning
of the traditional Christmas shopping season. It's a retailing term,
and it's called Black Friday because that is when the stores go into
the black from all the sales volume (during normal economic times.).

I think they should just show trailers for the movie. So far on USENET I
have read that the movie is anti-American because the White House gets an
aircraft carrier dropped on it and anti-Catholic be the the Vatican goes

No. That notice isn't there for you and I, it's there for people who buy

because they don't understand the laws of probability.
> 1. Will you be shopping any of the Black Friday sales this year?

After a lifetime of doubting the merits of attempting to meet a

attractive dating option that's ever walked into this place, but I still
met her in a bar, so I guess that counts.

That's a pretty hard question. The first thing that leaps to mind is
'Blackbird', but upon reflection, I think maybe 'A Day In The Life'.
> 4. What is overrated, in your opinion?
Many things. Reality television, tabloids, "pop music", cable 'news',
sound bites, talking points, party lines, 'free credit report' websites
and TV commercials that are not the one run by the Federal Trade
Commission (and are not actually free, but scams), advertising in
general, a political system that places more value on campaigning
and fundraising than it does on governing, erectile dysfunction drugs...
...I could go on for days.

When I was in Venice, I found this little cafe a couple blocks off of
the piazza with a guy standing in front of it wearing a tuxedo. Place
was mostly empty, and kind of a dump. I sat there and mostly failed to
eavesdrop on a cute french girl arguing with her cute french mother, had
a salad with some squid in it, and some pasta, and a piece of veal that
was the consistency of pastry, and a couple gin & tonics. The bill came
to something like 120,000 lire, which was like $100 at the time. That
was about the perfect meal.

A Home Depot card. I get 'em about every two or three months with reward
points on the credit card. The last two went to buy paint for the girl
to repaint the living room. The next one is going to sanding belts for
the floor sander I'm going to need in the kitchen.

That it won't end? Sure. Every few years a whackjob comes up with a
reason the world will end -- "this time for sure!" -- and yet it
doesn't. People haul out Nostradamus' poetry, bend the translation and
interpretation to their whim, and use that as "evidence" that (a) he was
prescient, and (b) the world will end, or this war is Our Destiny, or
some such foolishness.

Q: What kind of modem did Jimi Hendrix use?
A: A purple Hayes.
That's a wonderful story, but it really needs some digressions and stuff
that doesn't make any sense. Here, let me take a shot at it.
A girl from Shelbyville, who used to use the same pub as me but didn't
know at all well, was complaining one evening that her radiogram, as we
called sound systems in those far off days, had stopped working, and she
had a party organised for Saturday. I offered to go round and try and
fix it, so I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville, because I needed to
go there anyway. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so I decided to go to
Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I
tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take
the ferry costs a nickel, and in those days nickels had pictures of
bumblebees on them. "Give me five bees for a quarter", you'd say. Now,
where were we? Oh, yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion on
my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions
because of the war. The only thing you could get were those big, yellow
ones. But I went to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville
in those days, and I fixed her radiogram, so she asked me to the party,
and these guys at the party, they smoked. They sure smoked a lot. They
even taught their dog to smoke. And then they taught him to go
door-to-door and beg for cigarettes. So I was at this party in
Morganville, what you'd call Shelbyville, with these guys that smoke,
and we all had onions on our belt, and that's where I met my future
wife. November 8th 1958.
There, see? Much better.

Pretty much alla them, or most of them, or so many I can't comfortably

completely flat and waveless Monterey Bay. I realize this anecdote
contains no reference to favorite Beatles' songs.

I've had some really wonderful holiday meals put together by friends/

My mom made me Con Queso Rice for my birthday once, and it was great.

OK, now I want to change my answer. In 1981 or thereabouts I went on a
canoe trip in the Boundary Waters with three friends. At the very
beginning of the trip, we paddled some really long days - multiple
portages, lots of miles - and then for five or six days, didn't see
another human being. On one of those days, we paddled a fairly long
distance, then stopped to fish. For dinner that night we had grilled
lake trout, spaghetti with sauce that I'd made and then dried, and
reconstituted on the trip. And that instant cheesecake that doesn't
need baking, and that fits perfectly inside a competition-sized Frisbee.
That and a fire, and loons hooting out over the lake, and later on when
the fire died down, the stars and the cold night and toasty sleeping
bags on the shore of the lake.
Mary
Incorrect. That is an attempt by merchants to sanitize the term and
make it a good thing. "Black Friday," referring to the day after
Thanksgiving was originally used to describe the hellish crowded
chaos of the day. I think most people still understand the term that
way. I sure do.

I was 17 and sorta had a girlfriend by where my dad lived. At about

I don't know about overrated so much as the "time spent:dollars saved"
equation doesn't pan out for me. Add in the "dealing with people"
factor and the "hate shopping in general" factor, and the savings
would have to be fairly significant (and non-duplicatible). Most sales
pitches seem to be "Last Day For Savings" meaning, last day before
tomorrow's sale.

Wow. I just listened to an NPR segment with an astrobiologist at NASA,
who has been tasked with answering the fearful loons asking about
2012. Three different teenagers, contemplating suicide, a woman asking
about euthanizing her dog so it won't suffer in the end times. And
more along those lines, not just ignorant, but potentially fearfully
lethal.
Wow.
Jeez. That's scary.

As one who escaped the retail trade, I agree with these psots. Although
mileage can vary as to what the busiest day is. At the department store
where I worked the biggest day was the Saturday of their traditional sale
weekend a week or two before Thanksgiving. We had million-dollar-plus days
in a store that might gross $70,000 on an ordinary nothin'-goin'-on
weekday. On one of those sale days around 4 PM I was working a register
that issued a notice that it would not ring another sale until somebody
authorized came by and did something about the excessive amount of cash in
the drawer--which never happened under ordinary conditions.
It was utter madness, and it didn't pay squat, but I miss it.
Now that's just crazy talk.
When the apocalypse comes, I can think of few creatures I'd want with me
more than my dog.
Story I'm pretty sure I've told before. When 9/11 happened, I was
working nights, and I'd been up early and worked long hours, so I went
to sleep right before it happened, and I was out. My roommate comes in
and wakes me up, and all I can remember was him saying was "The world is
on fire", and pointing to the TV, which did indeed show buildings on
fire.
I said "You got it under control?" He laughed and said "Yeah". I says
"Okay. Wake me up if you need me", and went back to sleep.
Telling me this later, when I was awake, this really cracked him up.

The questions aren't as funny as you might think. "I've had three from
young people saying they were contemplating committing suicide," says
Morrison. "I've had two from women contemplating killing their
children and themselves. I had one last week from a person who said,
'I'm so scared, my only friend is my little dog. When should I put it
to sleep so it won't suffer?' And I don't know how to answer those
questions."

Gosh, that's a difficult question. But the one that stands out after all
these years is the one at Mack and Nell's Fish Camp, Cross Creek,
Florida. Served family style, and you had to order a day ahead, and have
at least three people in your party: started with Gopher soup [the
Florida gopher has a shell, by the way], then main course of catfish,
alligator tail, frog's legs, venison, butter beans, cole slaw, and hush
puppies, with lots of sweet tea to wash it all down.

I have a bunch of premium bonds (.uk government backed savings scheme,
which pays-out monthly prizes instead of interest) but that's not really
gambling as I can have my money back any time I like. The biggest prize
I've won on Premium Bonds was, I think, UKP100
I played the National Lottery maybe three times when it was first
introduced. It was interesting to note that, even though I was well
aware of the tremendously poor odds, I was almost /expecting/ to win on
that first week, such was the hype that surrounded it. The fact that
they held the first draw in my home town seemed like a good omen too.

I lost my senses of smell and taste for many months a while ago,

Other than that, a haddock and chip dinner at Trenchers restaurant in
Whitby was pretty damn good.

Initial purchase price valuable? Probably the old Silicon Graphics
computer propping-up my computer table. That was about UKP70,000 when
new. It's probably worth around UKP5,000 in legacy parts by now.
Current value valuable? Don't know. I'm not aware of owning any
fantastic antiques or anything, and I don't feel like listing expensive
stuff that I've got in case it sounds like bragging. Not that I've got
too much to brag about.

I don't think I ever have. If I can't think what to get someone, I'd

5 times, total, three different people. Actual sexual contact. Although

Cannot be enumerated. I can easily say that a bacon pizza in Maine was my
most recent favorite, but it wasn't the food -- which was good enough. It
was the company, All 4 of them. Best meal I've had in years.

Ohhh. Tough one. There's nothing inside the house worth more than 3
figures, even in pawn. Non-monetary value, boy. That's a hard one. My
grandparents' banquet table.

Yet the drugs are overrated?
I walked into hers. She's the manager. And instead of a swing band,
there's an internet jukebox, Claude Rains is played by an Indian
man named Prakar that everybody calls 'Bobby', and Sidney Greenstreet is
played by a foul-mouthed uneducated-sounding probably drunk southerner
with hair and bad knees named Alex. And instead of being in Morocco, far
enough from the war but still close enough to be touched by it, it's in
northern Virginia, far enough from the war but still close enough to be
touched by it.
But other than that, it's exactly the same.

The square root of 144.

No. I lost my respect for NASA a while back over their willingness to

No and no, by current plans.
> 2. Where did you and your Spouse/SO meet?
I was teaching at VPI, and divorced. The wife of one of my colleagues
suggested going to folk dancing to meet girls. I did. After the dancing
people were sitting around eating ice cream (student center sort of
place) and she was explaining calculus to one of the other students; I
fell in love on the spot.
She denies the final bit of the story.
We also met, at about the same time--I think after the folk dancing but
before we had really gotten to know each other--at fencing. I was trying
it out, she had done it in college (was a graduate student at this
point) and was helping teach beginners. There is a story that goes with
that, about what happens when a sword and shield fighter encounters
lunge/attempted parry/disengage, but I will spare you.
I am not a folk dancer, am not a fencer. One of the many ways in which
my second wife is better suited to me than my first is that she figured
out early on that I can't dance and makes no attempt to get me to. This
may have been based on her observation that, when they did a complicated
dance, I followed the steps--off the beat. When they did a simple dance,
I followed the steps--off the beat.

In terms of ordinary gambling, zero for both--so far as I can remember,

If you count investments in the stock market, a lot. I bought stock in
both Microsoft and Apple pretty early. I also bought stock in Be.
> 7. Have you ever cheated in a relationship? What's your definition of

Not in my view of the matter. The ambiguity comes from one situation in
the distant past where I and my girlfriend turned out, after the fact,
to have different views of the terms of our agreement in situations
where we were apart for long periods of time.
Cheating, in this context, means having a wife or lover with whom you
have agreed to a sexually exclusive arrangement and violating that
agreement. I don't think I would limit it to intercourse--that depends
on the terms of your mutual understanding.
> 8. What is the best meal you've ever eaten?
No single meal stands out.

I don't know. I have some first editions inherited from my uncle, and no
idea how valuable they are.
> 10. What was the last gift card you bought? Who was it for and where was it
> from?
I don't believe I have ever bought a gift card.
I'm not sure what counts as emotional cheating. I can choose not to have
sex with someone. I don't think I can choose not to be attracted to
someone.
Also, I'm not sure what "committed relationship" covers. An open
marriage is a committed relationship, but one in which sex with someone
else isn't, in my view, cheating. On the other hand, a relationship with
no commitment to being long term but with a mutual understanding that it
is sexually exclusive is sufficient to make sex with someone else
cheating, again in my view.
I thought it was funny.

A committed relationship is defined by the participants.
For the purposes of cheating, anyway.
Mary
What's in doing in your house?
Mary
Absolutely. The same actions can be construed in many different ways,
depending on the ground rules that have been agreed upon. I would say
it doesn't have to involve body parts touching, either. There's a
gamut from lust in the heart all the way to polygamous marriage.

I ate at the Rondezvous in Memphis this summer and wish I hadn't. It
completely ruined a memory of wonderful ribs that I'd had there a few
year ago. Not that it was my favorite meal of all time, just that I had
fond memories for those ribs. Now I just remember the crappy ones I had
this summer.
That does remind me of another rib meal that might rank up as the best
meal I've ever eaten. My family climbed a mountain in Yellowstone park
about 10 years ago. The boys were around 10 or 12. It wasn't so much a
"climb" as a hike, but we got to the top, so sue me. Anyway, after that
we went to eat at the Teddy Roosevelt Lodge. It was busy and we had to
wait, but all of us think fondly of those ribs. Little pieces of heaven
on a bone. Every time we have ribs (I really like ribs) we compare them
to the Yellowstone ribs.
I suspect they were actually pretty ordinary ribs and I don't really
want to go back to find out if that's true. I've experienced heightened
enjoyment of foods several times when I've done some extreme physical
exertion. On RAGBRAI I've said they could serve shit on a stick and it
would taste great. My sister disagrees, but apparently she has no taste
for hyperbole, either.
David
> >3. What is your favorite Beatles song?

"UN"possible???
That doesn't seem to apply at our house. The tools that I owned
before our marriage became "our tools" and the ones that he had
remained his.
Of course, he's the one using them 95% of the time anyway. The only
ones I use even semi-regularly are the specialized bicycle tools.
Mary
In idle curiosity, how many (here in AFCA) have combined pretty much
all stuff in marriage, v. those who still keep track of "mine and
yours"? I do know some married couples who draw a pretty firm line
(although I'm not sure about the furniture, I'll have to ask about
that), not just tools (or maybe hobby accouterments?) but down to
which portion of the mortgage and telephone bill is to be paid by
whom.
> In idle curiosity, how many (here in AFCA) have combined pretty
> much all stuff in marriage, v. those who still keep track of "mine
> and yours"?
For the most part, the stuff is "ours". House, cars, bank accounts.
(Actually, the cars are in my name only because I'm the one who
registered them when we got here and they couldn't add her name to
the title in her absence. Or something. It was all very stupid and
irritating and it's one of those things I ought to fix some day so
Mrs. P owns the cars in case I die in this non-community-property
state.)
But smaller things may belong to one or the other of us, especially
things received as gifts. So, you know, that's her pen, it's my
See's Candy, her book, my CD. Consumables matter the most,
obviously.
The books and CDs all get mixed together, but we still know whose
is whose. At least until we forget or get confused and argue about
it. The arguments aren't fights in these cases, just puzzles. "I
thought I got that for Christmas a few years back." "No, Dear, you
bought it and you gave it to ME." "Are you sure? Huh." That kind of
thing.
It doesn't really matter. But with the books, ownership confers
the right to read the book first. It's no fun taking a book that's
your personal own and finding out someone else has opened it and
turned all the pages and pillaged its newness. Neither of us would
do that to the other.
Oh, and it also matters in terms of lending things. Like when the
kid at church asked to borrow our Buffy DVDs and I said "Yeah, sure"
and Mrs. P. said "aHEM!" I'd already lent him Firefly, which was
cool, since that had been bought with my Best Buy gift card. And I'm
sure I could have lent him any of our communally owned DVDs that
were bought with our joint money. But the Buffy DVDs were hers. She
was happy to lend them out, but she wanted it clear that this was
her decision.
And rightly so, according to the dynamics of our marriage. Even as I
was saying "Yeah, sure," another part of my brain was galloping
after those words and trying to corral them. I knew I shouldn't have
done that even before I got the hairy eyeball.

My brother and his wife still have separate bank accounts, which works
for them, but is something that I'd find strange. Me, I don't really
give a shit. The new girl moved in, and her CDs went into the CD rack
and her tools went into the toolbox, and I figure there's two possible
outcomes: either she'll stick around, and it's a moot point, or she'll
leave, and I'll say "take what you want. It's just stuff. I'll get more."

When I first moved here to the current house in northern Virginia, the
pizza place around the corner used to sell these enormous beef ribs that
were about a half-pound each, for $2 apiece. Back when Jake the Malamute
with the cast-iron stomach was still alive (he used to chew on tin cans)
it was our favorite meal. I'd usually order two, or three if I was
really hungry, and I'd have to eat the first one quickly, or suffer
pantlegs covered in dog drool, but once I gave him the rib bone, he'd
make his way off into the far reaches of the backyard and then you'd
have about five minutes of crunching noise before he'd be back for the
next one. And then he'd eat the cardboard box they came in.
Unbeknownst to me, he wasn't eating all of them, and when I was cleaning
up his stuff after he died, I found seventeen rib bones hidden around
the backyard. They were given out as party favors during the Dog
Funeral, which was attended by twelve people and four dogs.
Moose, the new and improved snow dog, lacks the cast-iron stomach. First
rib bone I gave him, he gleefully crunched up into atoms and ate, just
like Jake had. And then about three hours later, he threw it up again.
Sorry dog, no rib bones for you.
Then, the takeout place fell on hard times, and as a cost-cutting
measure they trimmed their menu, and gone were the big beef ribs. That
sucked. A couple years later, I discovered another local rib place that
had the same enormous beef ribs, and that rapidly became my favorite
local hangout. It was a tragic dive of a bar, the sort of dank, dingy,
smoke-stained hardwood place full of sullen construction workers that I
came to love growing up in Chicago, and the beer was reasonable and the
big rib dinner was about twelve bucks.
...then, after twenty-nine years in business, they sold out to Koreans.
The new owners have gotten 3 stars from the Washington Post restaurant
guide, but I still haven't been back there yet. FUCKERS TOOK MY RIBS.
...anybody know where you can get good beef ribs near George Mason U?

That's pretty much how it works here. The furniture, house and
furnishings are "ours," but smaller items such as books and CD's
belong to one or the other. The dog is his and one cat is mine,
although that is fluid and can depend on which human is dispensing
food and which animal has vomited on the floor. We do have separate
checking accounts along with a house account. The separate checking
accounts are a holdover from him being a bachelor until 38, and me
being in a previous marriage with a penny-pinching miser. Most of our
earnings go into the joint account, but this way we each have a little
bit of mad money.
There's no one way that will work for everyone. I think part of us
getting along so well is that we were lucky enough to hit on a system
that worked for us right from the beginning. That, and understanding
that now and then we both need a little bit of "me" time.

Here's what I think.
You gotta go with the flow. You have to recognize that your
relationship will develop, evolve, shift, change. You have to recognize
that the IRS will view your income as a shared revenue stream, and
willy-nilly, that will influence how *you* see your shared income.
You'll make sacrifices, your spouse will make sacrifices; after 20 years
or so, you'll either be broken up or you'll be a team.
When we started out, we kept things more separate-ish. But I paid his
child support for four years; now he's paying my bills while I do Good
Works. You have to listen to how you feel. Listen to whether you are
feeling exploited; listen to whether you feel happier when all the money
is pooled. You can't let ideology dictate everything. You'll find
feminist ideologues who think you must NEVER be dependent on a man.
You'll find other ideologues who think that "marriage" always means
community property. Listen to them, but don't let them decide your life
for you.
And always have $500 - $1000 stashed somewhere so you can run like hell
if everything goes south and you find yourself petitioning the court for
a TRO.

Two vehicles are in an attached garage. Is that inside? The furnace

Does something that's attached to the house count as "inside" the

Cash fits in an envelope too (as does a check or savings bond.) I got
a lovely gift card from my sister a few years ago from a catalog that
was like the sheep shop in Through the Looking Glass. Everything
looked great until I actually went to buy something, and there wasn't
really anything there I actually wanted to take home with me.
I suppose if you know someone's shopping habits, they can be useful,
but if you know someone's shopping habits that well, why not just buy
the gift? Or cash, to give them more choices?
