With electricity here in Melbourne (Australia) now costing 30.6 cents
a kWh and going up at an unprecedented rate now seems like a good time
to go at least partly solar.
There are numerous inexpensive offers for solar panels at the moment
but the panels are made in China. Does anyone know what sort of
quality they are likely to be? Would it be better to pay more for
German or Australian ones?

Well, those chickens are coming home to roost (hopefully in some delicious General Tso sauce...) sooner than anyone expected. Just google for "defective Chinese solar panels", here is an example of some "expected life of 25 years" panels that are failing after two years:

Someone on NPR was discussing them the other day. They said there had been
some inexpensive Chinese ones on the market recently that were cheaply made
and rusting. He advised going with a company in business at least 10 years
and had a good reputation. Spending a few dollars more is worth the piece
of mind.
