When you put in a huge subject line it kills my newsreader and then I lose
stuff. So cut it the fuck out.

I didn't really intend to put the entire article into the subject
line.

Overloading fields to crash programs is a standard way of writing
malicious software. I wasn't TRYING to write viruses, honest.

It's an old theory of mine that posting very long subject lines in
Usenet is, like using sentences as a user name, a reliable indicator
of colossal jerkitude of the right-wingnut variety.

Which is, of course, how I knew straight away that Greg hadn't meant
to do it.

User-Agent: Hamster-Pg/1.25.2.0
X-Newsreader: PMINews 2.00.1200 For OS/2

is that correct? OS/2?? What is user-agent: hamster?

PMINews v2-- release 1998??
http://www.bluenexus.net/Reviews/PMINews/PMINews_v2-review-04-10-11.html

"PMINews is a beautifully elegant, flexible and powerful newsreader for OS/2
that was built by the same guys that brought you PMMail and distributed by
the same people behind Object Desktop, Trials of Battle and PlusPak: Themes.
The user interface is a dream, Agent-like and consistent throughout the
program, but it is tragically spoiled by one problem: it was released too
soon."

So is it ready for prime time?
This is a hard question, but I think the answer is, "no". I spent a long
time checking my own configuration and corresponding with other users to
make sure I wasn't stepping out over a cliff that had no bridge but, in
short, I believe PMINews needs its stability problems addressed quickly by
both Stardock and Southside Software before I can seriously recommend buying
it.

I remember being annoyed that my newsreader spent time trying to get
their email engine working rather than adapting their software i'd
been using in 3.1 to work under Win95. I don't remember if I paid for
the Win 3.1 version or after the conversion, but I was already an
established user of the software i'm still using when Win 95 first
appeared.

That began to change when I was still in high school in the early
seventies. I think it was pretty well accepted knowledge by the end
of the seventies.

Just watch the argument I'm about to get into with the clade clan who

IIRC we both do that so that we can have a message view of watched &
unread--this being as close as we can get in Agent to "show unread replies
to my messages".

This does not, however, conflict with 'ignore subthread'--when used within
such a thread it replaces the watch symbol with the ignore symbol throughout
the relevant subthread... (remove the 'ignore' and the 'watch' reappears).

Every now and then I find I have to mark a few hundred (or a thousand or
two) posts as "read" because there are just too many new posts and I'll
never find time to read them all. But I don't want to miss replies to my own
posts.

I don't know why Forte didn't provide the option to "watch" subthreads when
they did the same to "ignore"... wish they had.

Unfortunately the way things are in this group these days that isn't a
problem.

I agree. It would have to come with a way of specifying, perhaps by
group, which would have priority in case of conflict.

I sometimes do the same. Sometimes the original post wasn't my cup of
tea and others the usual thread drift has taken it out bounds. Then of
course there are the times when I'm so hopelessly behind I'd rather
chuck it all than man up and wade through it.
