None of the Microsoft Word newsgroups seem to have any recent activity
on them.

Any AFCANS know of newsgroups which can help me correct a silly problem
which started happening with my trusty (for years now) Word 2000?

What's changed is that If I want to replace a word in a line of text
with a different word I'm used to highlighting the word to be replaced
and then keying in the new word.

What's happening now is that when I start keying in the new word the
highlighting turns off but the highlighted word doesn't go away, it
stays there and gets pushed ahead by the letters of the new word I'm
keying in.

Most annoying. I've fooled around with replacing normal.dot without any
satisfying results.

Thanks guys,

Jeff

Maybe you hit your insert key. Try hitting it again before you start
typing.

Try pressing "insert" to toggle between "insert" and "overwrite" modes.

Try Tools -> Options -> Edit ->Typing replaces selection. If, when you close
Word, you are prompted to save the global template Normal.dot, do so.

I just deleted-without-sending a long post saying much the same thing.
But the toggle status between OVR and INS won't survive closing and
re-opening the document (which would be necessary for him to try
correcting the DOT.); nor would it have any impact on what happens if
the word is already highlighted.

Thanks, I'll try that in two days when I'm back at my office where the
computer with the annoying WORD 2000 is.

I fooled around with the OVR (overtype) mode with no success before I
gave up and posted here.

Mm. The Overtype Mode suggestion was a red herring.

When you get back to that PC open a new blank document, type a few words,
and then try selecting a word and typing. If the same annoying behaviour is
exhibited, check "Typing replaces selection" as above.

Then try the problem document. If this one document still exhibits the
annoying behaviour, select the entire document *except the final paragraph
marker*, copy it to the clipboard, and then paste it into a new blank
document. If the new version behaves OK, close the old version and then save
the new version as the old (confirming that you do want to overwrite the
original).

Let us know how it goes.

By George you got it!

That did it slicker than snot on a brass doorknob.

I'll be eternally thankful.

Good--though my life was already sufficiently rich without the snotty
doorknob image.

As regards the Word Newsgroups, Microsoft killed them and replaced them with
web-based forums--accessible via the MS web site--that they could control
and censor to their liking. Some of the MVPs were prepared to continue to
contribute under the new arrangement; others, including myself, were not.
