Nicholas Von Hoffman at thenation.com suggests that the Republicans can
retain the White House if McCain selects Condoleeza Rice as his running
mate.

Do you agree? Are there really a lot of Republicans who both dislike McCain
and like Rice? Are there a lot of people who would vote for Clinton because
she's female or Obama because he's black but would be happier voting for
Rice? What about the people who would never vote for Clinton because she's
a woman and/or would never vote for Obama because he's black? Won't a lot
of them vote for McCain/SomeWhiteGuy? Would the votes a McCain/Rice ticket
pick up more than offset the ones they'd lose?

I'm pretty sure I'm in a tiny minority in that I find Condi Rice kinda
creepy. At least I think von Hoffman would say I am.

No, just on the idea that a very effective 'negative' campaign ad would be
a collage of Rice saying, "No one could ever have predicted..." followed
by the litany of "...they would fly airplanes into buildings", "...the
levees would break", etc.

I always thought that she looked like one of the vampires on "Buffy the
Vampire Slayer". Anybody else?

A few years back, I provided lyrics for a parody song called "She
Still Looks Reptilian to Me", sung to the Billy Joel tune. The mp3
has disappeared from the net, presumably because of Billy Joel's
lawyers, but here are the original lyrics:

She's Bush's right hand
Her name's Condoleezza
To the 9/11 panel she said "I will tease ya
It's just that I don't like the spotlight you see"
She might seem all smiles
But she still looks reptilian to me

She backed up her boss
She says he's not lazy
She cannot recall
The details are hazy
If she seems unbiased, look close and you'll see...
She's Chevron's old shill
And she still looks reptilian to me

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh, she takes care of herself
Job security's high on her list of good things
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh, she gives medley a spin
She's not changing her mind
She's just shedding her skin

She'll do what she's told
She'll be a good croney
Doctor Rice will fight hard to paint Bush as no phoney
But inside her blood is as cold as can be
She speaks with forked tongue
She may hiss when she's done
And she sure looks reptilian...to meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

******

Our own Kim wrote her own version:

Testifies with a smile, batting her big brown eyes
Ruined all Boxer's faith with her casual lies
But she only reveals what Bush says can be freed
Secretary of State but she still looks reptilian to me.

She can lead you to war, she will unWMD you
Tell her that you don't have any - she'll never believe you
Her diplomacy won't stop, til the Iraqi's are free,
Yes she's meddling as hell, and she still looks reptilian to me.

Oooooh, she takes care of old George,
She can wait in the wings, she's got plenty of time
Oooooohhh, don't know if she gives out, but she never gives in
she just changes her line.

She's got stiff helmet hair, just like Barbara Eden,
(Some say it's plastic, but she ain't conceding)
Still she brings out the best in the worst Bush can be
Blames it on the CIA and she still looks reptilian to me.

Hmmmmmmmm Mmmmmmm Hmmmmmm Mmmmmmmmm

Oooooh, she takes care of old George,
Just three people need die, she could be next in line
Oooooohhh, don't know if she gives out, but she never gives in
she's just biding her time.

She is frequently sharp, she was real good in school
She can do as she pleases, she answers to a fool
Since she can't be convicted, it's a matter of degree
And the least she will do is throw missiles at you
And she still looks reptilian to me.

And now you probably WILL picture her doing that every time you see
her.

So much for voting for her.

A lot of people, even on the Dem side, really hate Hillary.

I used to really like Condi, till she became complicit in the whole
"moving prisoners around from country to country so we can say "No,
nobody's being tortured in Poland." (this week). The torture thing
has really tainted Condi.

Just like the refusal to vote against torture last week has tainted
McCain. When did torture become part of "American Values"?

Is there anyone, with the exception of Donald Rumsfeld, more closely
connected with the policy failures in Iraq than Rice?

McCain gets to finesse his support for the war a bit, because he's clearly
not been W's lackey. Rice though...

Running Rice for VEEP would be an enormous error IMHO. First, she was
asleep at the switch before 9-11. Second, she happily complied with
every stupid idea the administration had about war with Iraq.

If Rice were on the ticket it would make the election something of a
referendum on the Bush years.

(Ahem, didn't we just have a thread about how men disparage the
appearance of powerful women in politics?)

Apparently, so can Rice. At a 2004 dinner party, while she was national
security adviser, she was reportedly heard to say, ³As I was telling my
husb‹,² stopping herself abruptly, then continuing, ³As I was telling
President Bush.²
