I'd noticed that.
In my case, it's not so much posting a lot of original content as it is
editing down what I'm responding to in order to keep only the relevant
bits, I think.

Well, the ones I like are and the ones that annoy me aren't. ;-)
Seriously, for words like that I've been using wordnet.princeton.edu as
my referee. Kinda makes the cut because it's there, sorta doesn't
because it isn't. However if there's a consensus to add them I'll do it.
Did you like the new graphs? Or is everyone looking at this with a
proportional font so they come out looking like bad ascii art? ;-)
>milliraven
WOTW
>Did you like the new graphs? Or is everyone looking at this with a

I haven't yet worked out how to read the average posts per hour.
No, I've got fixed width, but I must admit that whiel I found the graps
nifty and a good way to represent the info, they're just a bit big, and
often end up scrolling between screens. While the time of day info is
nice to see (we're mostly a group that posts during the week for example)
the spelling, post count, and original content stats are the most
interesting to me.
But I figure those bit are what was fun for you to code up and by all
means have fun with the stats.
> >milliraven
> WOTW
OK, you have room to speak, having not made the 300 or higher milliraven
list of misleppers, but I'm keeping my eye on you, Boulding.
Hey Pixel, how about rating the misleppers in milliravens? :)
I normally use a proportional font, but it's no problem to switch to
a monospaced font. I can never remember which key I have assigned to
that, but it only takes one click of the mouse.
I use a proportional font, but can switch easily enough.
However, if you would rotate the graphs 90 degrees clockwise, you
could make them work in proportional fonts, too, and not have to
worry (as much) about the width, either.

I think you should add "sorta". But not "prolly".

Same here, except that there's no keyboard shortcut available for it
in Agent. I'd hoped they'd have fixed that by v3.3 - maybe v4 has
one.

You're in luck: you did it in caps, so it's ll get ignored, well, in the
orginal context, you did it all in lower case the second time and that one
will get picked up.
John - This milliraven's for you.

Thanks so much for all of this.
I have just plunked down 29 bucks in virtual money (which is how I think of
credit cards) to actually buy Agent 4.0. I must not have it calibrated
right, though, because your stats have me being the most-frequent poster
during the 0900 GMT hour, which is 4:00 to 5:00 am Central Time. It is
very unusual for me to be awake during that hour, and I'm reasonably sure
my cat Magic has not yet learned to type.

I'm using Agent 4. I switch between fixed-width and proportional fonts by
dropping down the "View" menu and clicking the desired font style. I see
no shortcut.
I'd like to see an extra space at the start of each line, as "|" is
defined here as a quote character, because some people use it as that,
of course. This means that some of the lines of the graph are blue
(supposedly quoted), and some are black, which is a bit disconcerting
for some reason.
I normally use a proportional font, but it's no problem to switch to a
fixed font for the stats (or anything else which needs it).
You're doing a great job.

Not as far as I can tell in 3.3. If there is that facility, maybe
it's hidden in a file somewhere.
To be honest, since I plan on going for version 4 soon, I'm not
spending a lot of time learning 3.3 - so the answer is basically "I
dunno, but I bet Nick does".

Thanks for the report. Most of the bugs I find are due to specific
problems like this people notice so it's very helpful.
Thanks again, Estron.
It turns out all the dates where I was being tricky and figuring out the
local time by pulling a field from the X-Trace data were being
calculated backwards. So stuff you posted around 11PM local was showing
up as 4AM instead. It's doing its 1 1/2 hour data processing thing now
to correct all those times.
No change in that respect in 4. I use a toolbar button. The big changes
in, 4 are in email junk filtering and non-junk destination assignment. The
only significant, and very much so, improvement for usenet is Ignore
Subthread.

I don't think that I post after 11 pm very often. Between 10 and 11,
sometimes, but very rarely after 11. If 2300 refers to 11pm-midnight, then
you should check to see why your script thinks I am.

Yup. Lots of instant gratification.
My wife and I went on a diet earlier this year. I've been weighing myself
virtually every morning for months, and putting the data into a
spreadsheet. The other day, I imported the data into JMP and applied the
Western Digital statistical process control rules to it to look for out
of control days. I also did an analysis to see if any day of the week was
significantly different than other days. From this, I reached an almost
inevitable conclusion: I'm both a dork and a geek.
John, I just added the View Fixed Font button to the toolbar - that's
almost nearly as good, in'nt it?

And would add that nothing's broken. So don't quote me as saying
otherwise (I know you haven't really done so yet, but I can see
potential for it).

Says who? I don't find it a problem. There are things in life which
are worth worrying about, this isn't one of them. If some of the
lines on the graphs remain blue it won't really bother me, but Pixel
asked a question and I answered.
I'm not part of your sad netcop Pnony[1], so don't try and drag me
into it or use anything I post in an attempt to support it, please.
[1] Pixel, is there any way you can accomodate ROT13, spelling-wise?
Again, just a thought, probably not worth the effort. Not used that
often here, anyway, eh[2]. Right, nothing to see here, move along.
[2] But I do think Furrfu is a much better word than Sheesh.

We could have told you that.
I had it that way on 1.93, but haven't got around to doing it on 3.3 -
I'm about to upgrade to 4 anyway. I'd still prefer a keyboard
shortcut quicker than Alt+V F and Alt+V V, which I use. I don't
normally use the mouse at all in Agent.

thanks.
I have tested the line out to the hifi system, though, and it sounds
absolutely wonderful.

Bill in Vancouver
Does it? Doesn't it change one euphemism for a bad word ("shit", I'm
thinking) into another euphemism, once removed? Using furrfu hides the
first euphemism and buries the bad word under another layer.
Not that this is important or anything, I'm just saying.

Or maybe a carrier pigeon? It's certainly taking a while, but then

Albatross maybe (imagine a snack vendor selling "ALBATROSS!"...), as I
believe the payload capacity on a pigeon is rather low.

With reference to your KVM project - I recall that you were
temporarily stopped because one of your systems uses USB for the mouse
and keyboard, and the KVM only has PS2 connectors. Is that a correct
assesment? If so, I might be able to solve another problem. Somewhere
around here I have a cord that has a male USB end, and two female PS2
connectors for mouse and keyboard. They should be somewhere in one of
the boxes of junk I have stacked in the computer room. If that is
what is holding you back, let me know - I'll dig it out and send it
along. If it's not what you need, I won't dig for it, but I'm more
than happy to send it along if it will help. I have two KVM switches
in my office, and I'd certainly hate to be without them. I sometimes
take one along when I'm helping a client prep a new computer to relace
the old one. We use PC Relocater, which does a pretty good job of
moving the applications from the old to the new.

The audio hub is pretty light - weighs a little more than a thumb
drive, but not a lot more.

Thanks again, Bob, but the problem is actually the reverse of what you
describe - keyboard and mouse have USB connections, not PS/2. If they
had PS/2 plugs, I'd be able to use the KVM I have (which doesn't have
USB).
It's no big deal - I'm getting a new mouse on Wednesday, and that
includes a USB->PS/2 converter - I have one already, so with two I
should be set up with the PS/2 KVM and ready to rock.
I do appreciate the offer, though. Very kind of you!

is there such a thing as rot26?
Yes, there is. I'm using it to post this message.

John, I don't mind if you use it every so often, but do so sparingly. It's
a pain sometime to have to decode messages.

That's pretty impressive. I'd ask for Top 10 Posters Using Google
Groups, but I'm afraid you'd explode and I'd end up living in a hut.

A man after my own heart! I loooove ... (wait for it) ... instant
gratification.
I'm not sure how much the script ponders matters of metaphysical
teleology. You're kind of on your own to figure that out.

Because I just don't like "prolly". It seems lazy and affected. I don't
like "pr'haps" or "p'raps" or any other dumb way it's spelled, I don't like
"frex", I don't like "innit". I prefer real words.
"Mislepping" is a Usenet tradition that only bothers me a little bit. It's
like a mosquito bite when the rest are like full blown poison ivy.
"Sorta" and "kinda" are almost real words. I say that because I use them.

"Your mother is having sex with a goat! Doesn't that bother you?"
That's why I love Xnews. I have my ROT-13 decoder hooked up to the R
key. To decode ROT-13, I just hit R. For ROT-26, I just hit R twice.
The extra work is negligible
Uh oh, I'm in trouble here.

I like "prolly" because it has affectionate childhood memories of the
pronunciation of my brother, whom I haven't seen in a number of years,
he being far away across the sea, and I being far away on the other
edge of the continent.
And I use "p'rhaps" because I kinda like slipping into the vernacular.
It sorta reminds me of the intimate, conversational aspects of usenet.

Thanks for the reminder. slrn defaults to Esc-r for ROT13, and Reply is
r. I *never* reply to news posts, so r is better for me for ROT13.
Been going to do that.
<clickety>
Only the ones encoded with ROT26. Only lightweights use ROT13 any more.
I haven't taken inventory for quite awhile, but I'd guess I probably
have somewhere between 10 and 20 PS/2 keyboards and nearly that many
computer rodents. The other day at Walmart I picked up a cordless
optical mouse and keyboard for $11.00 - the reciever had both USB and
PS/2 connectors.
It contains its own operating system by now, right? :)

That's an easy one. This list only counts posts made with Google

What's your timezone, groo? You're looking at the GMT list there.
From looking at your stats I'd guess you are East coast, North America,
so 2300 would be around 5PM EDT.
I have reliable information that groo was recently seen in or around
the area of Santa Cruz, CA eating a corn dog and making no attempt to
control the volume of his shirt. You might want to switch him to PDT.
Thank you. Wow. Veronique. Mary. Richard Hershberger. Mike Muth. Les
Albert. Just to pick five at a quick glance. Anybody who isn't
reading their stuff isn't reading AFCA.

I think everyone else should post only through Google groups for a week and
see if Blinky notices.

You mean the lack of identifying information? That was such a nice
quote, I couldn't mangle it to fit my stuff into 4x80. It barely fits
itself. This one too, though I had to trim it to fit.

Well, I can't just switch him so I guess I'll just scowl. Here's a line
from his header...

Could just mean he's using an East coast server from the West coast.
I've thought about doing that. I may get around to it.

And even then you had to leave out the conclusion: "All other kinds of dog
compare unfavourably with this picture."

Aw, I didn't know you cared.
Actually, I have posted with GG, OE, Thunderbird, XNews, Agent, Free
Agent, Newsrover, Opera, and Netscape this year. By far the largest
number with from GG with Newsrover coming in a distant second.

Blinky might not, but SW certainly would. That is, if he comes back.
I don't think he's posted since August 30. Say, you don't suppose the
MPAA got him, do you? There are certainly a few people here who would
not have hesitated to drop on dime on his bit torrent activities.
Mike
No, I meant on that one - the post I replied to - the delimiter was
missing the [space] after the two hyphens.
