Before I begin: they're announcing the Gall force DVD on the AIC website.
This could be a sign of a new Gall Force production.

Hayashi mentioned in one of his interviews that the genesis of the Tenchi
Muyo OAV was a shelved BGC hot springs episode. Well, what I plan on
doing is e-mailing the AIC site and asking them the following:

1) which parts from the Tenchi episode came directly from the original
and who was doing what in them.

2) for a brief outline of the episode as originally conceived.

I have no idea how this will go over. I'll ask in English on the english
site. If that doesn't work, I may translate it using my best keigo and
try again on the Japanese site, but I think my time would be better
served job hunting and art practicing.

Before I do that, I want to make sure I have covered all the bases. Do
you have any other questions to do with this matter that you'd like to
ask?

Beyond that, how about a discussion on this topic itself? Which parts of
the Hot Springs episode were likely in the original BGC concept. I'm
pretty sure that, for example, Priss didn't summon a demon, and Mackie
didn't use a magic sword to slay a boomer.

Is Ryo-ohki a boomer?

Dammit, now you've given me a vision of Nene-chan in one of said

It's no good asking me that. I can't get Nene soaking in the

I wonder if I can work a hot springs sequence into 'The Osaka

Is this the point where I mention that I'm plotting out my Tenchi/Eva
crossover/fusion "Tenshi Muyo! Rei-O-Ohki"?

Actually, the title is misleading... Pen-pen is the equivalent to
Ryo-Ohki; Rei is the analogue of Sasami (with Yui Ikari taking the
position of Tsunami).

I'm going to e-mail AIC and ask them. I just re-watched Tenchi ep4, and
I'll summarize my thoughts in the morning. It is my theory that the onsen
episode of BGC would have fallen between BGC 8 and BGCrash! 1, which will
hopefully become clear tomorrow.

Prof, just because Ryo-ohki can go from something the size of a rabbit
to a large spaceship or to a humanoid form doesn't make her a boomer.
It just means that she's a very inexpensive WMD to operate. Got
carrots?

It's Mihoshi that's the 33S....

Yep, here's my summary so far:

What I did last night was sit down and watch Tenchi Muyo episode 4, the
one where they go to the hot springs. Hayashi said in his interview a
while back that the hot springs episode was originally a BGC idea that
was rejected. As an amateur artist and writer, I know that I re-use
earlier concepts, modified for changes in subject. So, in this case, I
believe I can pull out scenes which Hayashi originally intended for the
Sabers. If I'm wrong, no big deal- hopefully they'll respond to my e-mail
once I compose it. I'll give everyone a few more days on this group, just
in case someone else thinks something up.

The Scenes:

1. Tenchi dealing with a massive pile of luggage- Replace Tenchi with
Mackie, and it sounds about right. In TM!, Ryoko causes the luggage to
fall on Tenchi. Perhaps in the original, the luggage became unbalanced
and did the same.

2. Tenchi's Dad talks about peeping, Ryoko spots him, he falls down.
Well, let's say it was Mackie who was doing the peeping. Priss could have
spotted him, and he could have fallen over as a result, but there would
have been more cheesecake shots in the meantime.

3. Tenchi is brought into the women's baths. What if, instead of falling
back into the men's baths, Mackie falls forwards into the women's baths.
Alternatively, he could have fallen back into the men's baths, and been
out of the show until the end.

4. Tenchi nosebleeds [at Ayeka], and faints. Mackie spots Linna,
nosebleeds and faints. In TM! Sasami looks after him, in BGC, how about
Nene [in a towel]

5. Monster approaches, out of control. Well, obviously Priss cannot
summon boomers, but this is likely where the boomer goes berzerk.

6. Ayeka and Ryoko run from demon; Tenchi told to get sword [Sasami
assists]. How about: Priss and Linna running from demon, Mackie and Nene
run to get some equipment.

7. Tenchi's dad is caught by old woman. Alternate ending- Mackie fell
back into the men's baths, and at the very end of all the fighting, is
brought in by the old woman, asking Sylia "what's the meaning of all
this"?

8. Sasami has a nightmare about Kagato. Sylia has a nightmare of Largo
returning.

Based on this, my theory of the original plot runs thusly:

This episode is a bridge between Episode 8 of Bubblegum Crisis and
Episode 1 of Bubblegum Crash!

The girls [and Mackie] go to a hot springs on vacation. Mackie is the
baggage porter. The hot springs are divided between male and female. He
tries to peek over the wall at the girls bathing [all of them]. Let's
call Priss and Linna nude. Priss spots him, he falls towards the water,
spots Linna, and faints after a blood fountain. Nene helps him up.

At this point, a boomer malfunctions, and chases Linna and Priss. Mackie
is helped by Nene to go seek out either equipment or Sylia. If Sylia is
present, she goes with Nene and Mackie to get some equipment of some sort
to fight the boomer.

Priss and Linna run from the boomer, keeping it occupied. They return to
the springs itself, where Sylia/Nene/Mackie are waiting. They blast the
boomer.

I have no clue what happens afterwards, other than our heroes/heroines
win, and Sylia has a nightmare about Largo.

The problem I have is that this really was an effective bridging episode.
It would have eliminated a lot of the plot problems between the end of
Crisis and the start of Crash! There would have been no corny year long
break with reformation of the team and assorted nonsense. It would have
made the show flow properly.

At the same time, it was all fanservice, and many would object to the
episode being mere pandering. The bridging could have been accomplished
in a less fanservicey way, but a bridge was absolutely necessary.

That's my theory. As I said before, if anyone else wants to add a few
questions before I fire off my e-mail, please do so.

Well, one nice thing about daylight savings is that I get to sleep in an
hour later. Then again, it just put off for an hour waking up to the
aftermath of the blizzard that went through my city. Take heart, others
in the world sympathize with your situation with respect to crummy
weather.

Of course, if I had my way, it wouldn't snow until December.

That works, or I could see Priss giving Mackie a slap on the back to
encourage him, and unbalancing him.

Cheesecake shots are always welcome. And I think it would be Sylia who
spots him, seeing as she's the one who spots him all the other times.
And she's less likely to inflict bodily harm than Priss.

He needs to fall into the women's baths, otherwise the next scene
doesn't work.

> 4. Tenchi nosebleeds [at Ayeka], and faints. Mackie spots Linna,
> nosebleeds and faints. In TM! Sasami looks after him, in BGC, how about

Hmm... Given the attraction between Ayeka / Tenchi and Nene / Mackie,
I'd say he spots Nene and nosebleeds. Possibly looked after by Sylia
(feeling sorry for her little brother) or looking after himself. I can
imagine Priss tugging at Nene's towel, like Ryoko does for Ayeka, as well.

I'd guess Priss and Linna would act as a distraction more deliberately
than Ayeka and Ryoko did.

Maybe Mackie's gone for a less hazardous method of peeking and rigged up
a camera?

My guess for the source of the equipment - The girls and Mackie arrived
in one of the equipment trucks?

Don't forget at some point the owner of the springs has to faint / run
away so she doesn't discover the KSs' identities.

That would probably have required a re-write of about two thirds of BGC!
one. Not that that's a bad thing...

It's true that BGC is less fan-servicey than other anime, but I doubt
people would have objected too strenuously, especially if the episode
was short (half-hour like the Tenchi episode), and intentionally
humerous from the beginning.

Chapter 12, however, is waiting on my wife to finish approving

Only in the sense that the Juraians are the descendants of Silver

Probably not very well. I've tried similar measures, regarding different
issues, with no luck. You'll get an e-mail jockey, who hasn't any answers
and hasn't the authority or import to park himself next to leading staff of
production and ask for details about an anime that was never made.

I'm fairly certain the cassette drama, "Chotto Abunai Knight Sabers," takes
place at a hot springs. The cover is the (in)famous picture of nude Nene
reflecting her Hardsuit on the water.

Oh, it'll be a barrel of laughs. Think of all the subtext and fanservice
possibilities!

You're right, of course, but then again, it takes about ten to fifteen
minutes of my time to do so, and it's not like I'm really short of free
time at the moment.

Who has that tape, and what can they tell us about it?

i have the tape ^_^

for starters, only PART of Chotto Abu-Knight Sabers is in a hot springs (though
i personally think they're in a shower stall)...

the tape is basically about Nene falling in love with a guy at work named Cid,
but as it turns out, he is actually a Genom spy who's been watching the Knight
Sabers...i'd post more, but i don't wanna spoil it for anyone ;)

In other words, it's not really the same as the original script idea.
Thanks.

No, we can figure out the rest. I wonder how much they'd lose in terms of
fandom support if Nene fell in love and did the wild thing with a non-
Genom spy, actual nice guy. Probably a whole lot. I'd guess the same
would go for all the sabers.

I have it, but I haven't listened to it. Part lack of desire to pop an old
tape into a player and watch it be eaten, part lack of remembering that I
yet need to do so. It's the first of the two Sonorama Cassette Specials.
From the description, Nene falls for Cid, a "kakoii" guy, who joins the AD
Police elite forces, at the same time that a Genom spy watches the Knight
Sabers. No mention of an onsen on the back, as far as I can see. I really
ought to play this tape.

Exactly. Now that I'm on a rant, I'll continue it:

If I were chief of the ADP, I'd put Nene in the computer crimes division,
and have her deal with bigger cases, because she's obviously wasted as some
cheap-o operator.

The same goes for YUA. Yoriko can find out anything about anyone. So she's
a little wimpy? Who cares. As chief, I'd make her a detective, and put her
skills to some good use.

Yes, I am well aware why this isn't happening.

If you were Nene-chan supervisor, you would never know how good she. She
saves those skills for Knight Saber and her personal business. She knows
better than to become a victim of the Peter Prinicple and loves the work the
Knight Sabers gives her. She stay with the AD police many for the access to
the their databases and the Net and for the visible means of support that it
provides.

Yes, but Leon knows, and he practically is her supervisor. The real problem
has nothing to do with her hiding her skills. In truth, she could trumpet
her l33t computer sk1llz all around, and it would make no difference.
She'd still be a lowly operator.

Yeah, but as long as she calls he Leon-poo, do you think he would help her?

Yah, right! As if I've never read one from Rob's best fics on the net list.
For cryin' out loud, it's sitting on my HD with a bunch of other stuff I've
found interesting. (besides my mp3s)

Y'know, although I heartily recommend reading them all, I don't expect
everyone to read every 'fic on that list... (Especially considering
"Trial by Tenderness" is larger than all the rest put together. It's
at, what, 99 *_big_* chapters and still going?)

Anyone wanna figure out the word count and compare it to Wheel of Time?

<chuckle> Well, I *was* being tongue-in-cheek. I have the same, actually --
a rather substantial live archive of the FFML and other sources going back to
1995 (far from complete, but surprisingly comprehensive).

Don't. Jordan might take it as a challenge.
