I realize the potential for a flame war here, so I will lay down some
ground rules:
1) Do not just state "[X story] sucks". If you think a certain story
sucks, list at least three reasons why you think it does, because if
it really does suck finding three reasons why it does shouldn't be
that hard to do. And remember, whatever people post here is OPINION,
not fact. Do not state things like they are absolute truth, and if
you disagree with someone nominating a certain fic as a sucky fic,
explain why you disagree, clearly and concisely.
Corollary: Saying a fic sucks because it considers Crash/ADPF/Crime
Wave/whatever to be canon is NOT a valid reason. Try again.
2) Whether you agree or disagree with someone's nomination, for God
sakes, if you're on Google Groups, keep your finger AWAY from the star
ratings. Post and agree or disagree and explain why. The star
ratings say nothing.
3) No flaming, whether of the so-called sucky fics or of others'
opinions. Be respectful, and keep the swear words to a minimum.
4) Feel free to include 2040 fics too.
5) Have fun. If this gets out of hand I will declare a ceasefire,
which is fun for no one.
So, people, let's start! What's the worst BGC fic that you've read?
Amanda
I wrote a negative critic of Innocent Guilt, and you didn't respond
with much tolerance.
Alemann
The word is "critique," and I will admit I blew my top, but that
wasn't a review, that was being nitpicky to the maximum. And you were
assuming that because IG was the first fic I posted to FFN, that it
was the first one I wrote, period. It's not. And anyway, the rules I
outlined above are for everybody, including me. So hopefully
everybody (yes, including me) will behave and act like the adults we
all presume ourselves to be. (And by the way, if Crash being
considered canon in IG is a strike against it, then you may as well go
critique BGZ as well, because that one does the same thing. And I'm
sure there are many others that do.)
So, what is your nominee for worst BGC fic?
Amanda
There is : http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5437169/1/bubblegum_age
I think it's about Leon hiring a prostitute so he can call her Priss,
or something. I can't actually tell. The english is so bad, it reads
like a babelfish translation from Italian.
-Ian
So because I honestly can't be arsed to browse FFN and hunt bad fics ATM,
and because I just got up ( :D ), here's a list of what makes a fic
horrible to read for me:
Bad grammar. Especially when it's an otherwise simple grammatical
structure. There is no its'. Neither are it's and its the same, it's is a
contraction of it is. But try and explain that to some thick-headed
authors, I dare you...
Also, when the author takes an English dictionary and throws it in the
blender, like the one Dartz linked.
Bad spelling. Oh no. I once read a fic (not BGC) where the author used the
word 'pershuashion'. Yes, you may use brain bleach now. I actually
recoiled away from the screen. That fic had an interesting plot, but I
stopped reading it right there.
Mary Sue/Gary Stu. The OC can fight Bu-12B's with his bare hands, and gets
away without even so much as a scratch? When I close my eyes, I can even
*hear* the author going *fapfapfapfapfap*...
Of course, there's also the almost entirely subjective opinion of whether
a story manages to captivate me. If it doesn't, I won't read any further.
Amanda, IG was your third one, IIRC? Right after FTA? Or was it after
NextGen and thus your second one?
Dartz: Took a look. It probably is... Squick. >.<
Antagonist
I wrote IG at the same time as FTA part 3. Mostly did it so I could
enter something in the fanfic contest at NDK 2004 (the main reason
it's so short), but in the end, it didn't happen because 1) The
contest ended up being discontinued that year, and 2) I wouldn't have
been done with it in time if it were still going anyway. I tried to
write it so you wouldn't have to have read Next Gen to understand it,
but in the end, even I'll admit it's a REALLY good idea to read Next
Gen first, as pretty much all it is is an expanded version of what
Priss told Yumeko and Nene. I've made several grown men cry with it,
so I must've done something right with it. (They all say it was the
last scene that did it. Hmm...)
Anyway, to keep on topic, yes, I agree that Italian/English/whatever
one is pretty bad. Even if it was in perfect English, in my mind it
would still look like a 12-year-old wrote it. I imagine if it was a
little more fleshed out and delved more into Leon's mind, we'd have
something good. Instead...we get the version on FFN. If the author
really did spend two years in the US, wouldn't his English have been
better than something that looks like (and probably was) it was chewed
up by Babelfish?
There was a fic I liked when I was about sixteen, called "Bubblegum
Crisis: Berserk." The Cliff Notes version of the story is that it
takes place after Crash, and Priss, Linna and Nene go out on a mission
w/o Sylia (who's out of town, IIRC). I liked it back then, but upon
rereading it a few years ago it, well, wasn't as good as I
remembered. Everyone was reduced to a stereotype personality-wise,
and while it's not an absolutely terrible story, it ain't great,
either. There was a follow-up story to it, but I can't remember for
the life of me what it was about. Either it was unfinished upon last
read, or I didn't finish it. Really don't remember.
Amanda
Sylia reduced to a talking head is nitpicking? You can't take
criticism, admit it.
> So, what is your nominee for worst BGC fic?
I'll get back to you in the morning. I have my candidates, but it's 10
PM where I am, and I spent the whole day attending lectures.
Reread my critique of BGZ I made several months ago if you want.
Alemann
Sarah Davis did a critique of Next Gen 1 and 2 back in, I think,
2000. I don't remember if it was just a critique or if it was a
ripping, but I was in shock for several days. I say that, and yet I
don't remember a darn thing she said in it.
I don't have a thick skin, nor can I learn to grow one. Know why?
Here's a secret: I'm autistic. For the life of me, it's near
impossible to make note that any critique is of the STORY, not of ME.

So you only look at IG in and on itself, without taking into account
there's a bunch of sequels to be read? Because that's the only valid way
of counting Sylia to be a 'talking head', in my book.
What you wrote on FFN was a borderline flame, but whatever.
What would YOU have written differently? What was it that made Sylia out
to be a 'talking head' to YOU?
Antagonist
@Amanda: That's really none of his business...
So is IG a candidate for a sucky fic in Alemann's book? Oh dear. =P
@Anta: that's something I don't mind people knowing. After all, I
have plenty of other things that REALLY aren't his business, beyond
"what I've made public."
Amanda
Amanda, this has nothing to do with autism. Many nonautistic people
have such thoughts, including me.
> So is IG a candidate for a sucky fic in Alemann's book? Oh dear. =P
No.
And you, Antagonist. Stop being an bootlicker, especially to someone
distant from you several thousand miles.
Alemann
Ill be honest, i stay away from fanfiction. The only one ive ever
thought was fantastic was anything written by Zinegata regarding his
Gundam side story fanfics, of course i got into those back in my
freshman year of HS when i was falling back into gundam. Ive only
written like 3 fanfics in my life, which had some start, but i look
back and say "... yea, thats never going to finish, whatever".
However, if i ever get around to wanting to read fanfiction again, i
might check out what Dartz and what you have Amanda, i saw the links
on Dartz site, so i might look into them. Accually i take that back, i
did read a fanfic not to long ago, which was about a kid raping his
pokemon and fisting Nurse Joy and everyone dying. It was pretty sick,
but i was entertained, but made me realize why i stay away from
fanfiction. The only nitpick i wanted to add was the fact that it
could have been written better because i didnt know what gruesome
thing was happening next it was so out of order.
Alright, i know that doesnt have anything to do with BGC so ill shut
up.
Wait, was that the BGC crossover with Batman: The Animated Series. I
remember skimming through the first 2 chapters, it was alright from
what i remember, but i was like "Huh, nothing is happening, oh well".
Yeah... a lot of stories can be like that.
Not bad, but not exactly good as such. They just... are. It's an easy
trap to fall into. People are afraid to screw around too much...
because there's always someone arsehole who'll flame if you don't fit
his own idealised versions of his favourite characters, so they end up
doing too little, and there's not enough development to satisfy. So
push Sylia to breaking point where she screams 'Fuck you Mason!'....
so what if she didn't do it in the OVA, everyone has a point where
they'll do it.
People are afraid to do anything... so we end up with something that's
not bad as such, it just sort of *is*....
I haven't read much BGC fics, tbh. Mostly because I picked and choosed
what was on the fanfic guide. I could spot the ones I didn't want to
read and avoid them. I find though, that if you ignore the irritating
things, learn to filter them out, filter out the morons.... fanfic can
be good. But you have to ignore the idiots posting shit. We can laugh
at their stupidity, but we can never give in and legitamise their
trolling by acknowledging it and allowing it to ddrag down good
posts.... of fanfiction.
-Ian
I'd lock the topic right now if I could.
Amanda
Welcome to the internet! =P
You'll get my bad BGC fanfic list tommorow.
Alemann
Wow, thats like AMV on youtube. Theres only like a handful which is a
rough precentage of 5 to 8 precent that are really good AMV that
deserve whatver praise, then the remaining 92-95 precent are just
mindless garbage that people just found out how to use Windows Movie
Maker and want to make 50 AMV a day. Of course out of that amount is
about 10 to 15 precent of decent AMV to watch which isnt too bad but
has the potential for improvement.
I have more interest in AMV than fanfic because i do more on AMV,
granted mine might not be the absolute best, but i try not to make it
the absolute worse, unless thats what im going for. Heres my youtube
page: http://www.youtube.com/user/ZeonicFreak
That's Sturgeon's Law man. 90% of everything on the internet is
crap :).

Right...got nothing to do with autism at all:

Wow...usually I get called an insensitive asshole or worse...I must be
doing something right for a change...
And I do have a reputation of being a pig-headed obstructionist with a
tendency to willingly antagonize people I don't like...which, by the way,
is part of the reason I originally chose this handle.
Does your reply mean you think I should go against my better judgment
because Amanda is geographically almost halfway around the globe? What the
fuck is wrong with you? Where the hell does distance come into opinion?
Y'know, I consider Amanda a friend, and as such I may be a bit biased, but
your conduct around here has been underwhelming so far...and I think you
know it.
FYI, back when you were still 'new' to this group, Amanda even told me
your tone was entirely different in the mails you sent her...she was
almost apologetic even...but it looks like you exhausted that bonus for
some reason...
Also, what is so hard about answering my question? I'm honestly
interested. FYI, I kinda have problems with attitudes like "It's shit
because I(!) say it is!" There are few things that annoy me more than
this. And that's exactly what you did with your review on FFN. I have no
problem with differing opinions, as long as they're backed by halfway
solid reasoning. Yours haven't been, so far. You just stopped replying to
people who poked holes in your harebrained theories. And no, I can't be
arsed looking for the particular posts here, because you're not worth the
effort.
As a matter of fact, I think I'm with Dartz from now on...throwing rocks
in your general drection for the lulz from now on.

Ya mate. I was talking to someone online about this, and he gave me
some choice words to say to the person responsible. Jebo ti pas mater,
èetnièko ðubre jedno bez kurca . A little Ruff perhaps, but we both
agreed it was fair.
-Dartz.
Look at Alamann info for his profile:
"About me:
My opinion is a fact. Deal with it."
That should tell you something about the type of person he is if there
is that statement. At least he is true about who he is.
Heh. Such a pity I don't use Google Groups. Such a pity my provider also
provides a newsserver. :P
No shitty star ratings to get annoyed over on my end. :D
And yeah, that bit of his profile is pretty preposterous. Pity it's the
only thing he wrote there...

Of course, maybe no one read it...

Chrome and Firefox have gzip filters built in, so just save it as a
text file from there. Dunno about Safari, IE or Opera, though.
-==Kensu==-
And I don't think it's going to be mentioned here.... well... you know
what I mean. I liked it, I liked it quite a bit. Even if I was a little
surprised to find it had been written in 2005 and not earlier. Nené does
well in the spotlight... especially with how her hacking is described.

That belief cover other fanfics as well: stories that go way outside
the universe that are supposed to be based in don't hold any appeal
for me. Why write a BGC story, with the BGC characters and set it in a
another universe? Or replace the BGC characters with others from
another series? At that point, why not write an original story, when
you can control everything?
Craig
Generally it's because the writers have never done any writing besides
fanfics, and want to tell other kinds of stories, but think it's too
much work to come up with their own worlds, characters or do research.
It's amazing how lazy some new writers are; I'm speaking here of both
fanfic authors and my classmates when I was getting my English degree.
If you're going to go through the trouble of writing a story, don't
you owe it to yourself to make it the best story it could possibly be?
-==Kensu==-
People suggested some real stinkers.

That was 1999; we've had a decade of writing to plow through since
then...

Go to:

Then browse.
There is one that is especially notworthy, as it contains character
creation details in the first chapter.... using the Fuzion system from
the RPG book. Basically, what comes out the other side is a best
described as a 'munchkin'. 'A boomer life' I think it's called.
I'm not that familiar with 2040 fanfics... I haven't actually seen
BGC2040 myself yet. Most of the ones on FFN now though are 2040-era,
with only a few OVA era fics. Then again, I'm not really the one to
complain about badfic... considering the messes I've unleashed in
other fandoms over the years. Even YT has its problems (like unsubtle
fandom referencing).

Ah, the good old days....When fanfiction communities was like the wild
west, and many a war was engaged over who was the better writer and
who's story was better. Now, it's 250 different shades of the same
Inuyasha, Pokemon, or Nataruo (sp) story.......*sigh*
