Fanilow Quote of the Day from the BNet board:

"Who can cry while Barry is Bamming!!!"
............

People are asking whether all this stuff (crotch grabs, thigh rubs, "bams")
will disappear from his shows at the Paris. Something tells me not when
there's a group of repeat audience members who buy LOTS of tickets to see
Barry throw his hips out of joint.

But it truly is all about the music, right?

Pass the Pepcid.

That kind of thing doesn't turn me on at all. In fact, I find it
faintly embarrassing and I wish he'd stop and grow old gracefully.
(I'd also like him to stop all the Botox etc as well.) Dooing the
'bams' can't be helping his hip problems, so isn't very sensible.

It's just when you think of the bashful Barry from the 70's and 80's
and onward I could've never dreamed that he would grab a handful of
himself on stage, I don't care who he's copying. Kye either- it makes
them both look out of their element.

I don't think Barry was ever bashful. Awkward, yes. Bashful, no.

I think it makes them both appear to (a) want to be Michael Jackson, (b) need
to check to see if the family jewels are still there, or (c) have a big itch.
In any case, they look pathetic. Barry used to be such a class act in the
80s. Innovative shows, and surprises. Now he's going for the cheap audience
reaction. His talent as a performer used to be worth the price of the
ticket. But at his current astronomical prices, crotch grabs, thigh rubs,
and pelvic thrusts done to get some fans to scream as if they've just had an
orgam isn't worth the cost.

Actually, my first thought is to wonder what the warranty is like on

Lol. Good one. ;^)

Of course, he'll have to challenge that statement and say, "I did not have
hip replacements. I had cartilage repair." Perhaps if he'd refrained from
multiple bams, he wouldn't have needed to have them repaired again. And here
he is doing the same thing.

As Garry loves to say, "Oh well..."

To me, and this is just my opinion, it feels like he's prostituting
himself for the sake of these women. I've never said this before to
anyone because of the reaction I know I'd get, but it feels like that
to me. Poor guy, is he really that desperate?

Oh, and Scooter, I don't think Pepcid is going to be strong enough for
me. :o)

PS: I just got my new rebuilt time capsule from Apple. Mine died
Sunday night, and since I had bought it along with my computer, they
used the extended service warranty I bought for my computer to get me
a replacement for free. That's $500 they saved me from having to
spend for a new one. THAT is good customer service. Sorry to vent,
but there you have it. Apple rocks.

I've always thought charging $1000, $1200, or $1500 for fans to stand in
his presence for 5 or less minutes amounted to the same thing. The fact
that some money (just how much?) goes to charity is irrelevant. Most fans
don't pay the money just because they want to give to his fund. They pay
it because that's the only way to meet the man. I've read so many say
they've wanted to meet him for 20 or 30 years, and if it costs a grand,
that's just what they'll pay. And honestly, from so many reports of him
being in a bad mood, or distant, or distracted, he's not living up to his
end of the client/customer/prostitution contract in the pay-for-services
analogy.

Yeah, we probably need a prescription for something much stronger.

Since I'm a PC person, I don't have a clue what a "time capsule" is. But
I'm glad you got a new one at no charge. Aren't you glad Stiletto doesn't
run Apple? ;^)

I hope it's radically different. He's been in sort of a show rut for way
too long. Too much same old, same old. Changing a song here and there
hasn't been much of a show change. Nor has rolling his new cover album
songs in and out. And how long has he been doing the run-around-the piano
bit? And Young Barry/Old Barry? And Copa as a production number? He
used to say he always wanted to keep things fresh. I remember when he
came back on tour in late 1987 after almost two years off, and he said he
wouldn't have returned if he hadn't figured out a show that "killed" him.
And we got the Big Fun Tour de Force which was fabulous. So you'd think
after five years of a show that hasn't changed much, he'd want to create
something very different to keep his brain from leaking out his ears from
sheer boredom.

With the different marketing focus of the Paris, hopefully people will be
surprised and amazed at something really new. We'll see...

Here's the info on the time capsule. Basically, it's a wireless

no wireless internet access, so my access to read and respond to
anything since Monday has been limited. Apple would no longer be in
business if it were run by Stiletto. Even with Steve Jobs, it came
close to implosion a few times, now it's beating the socks off of
Microsoft. It's funny given that Microsoft owns shares in Apple.

And yeah, we'll be needing a prescription for something stronger than
the Pepcid.

I would have loved to see Barry sing "Come with Me" live. I missed
the '84 tour. I think that's the only one I've missed. Of course, it
was when he did a lot of great songs he no longer does! When I first
watched the Live in Japan video, it was the first time I heard it. I
was hooked. When he talks about singing an "old one" or "something
different" I wish it was one of these kinds of songs.

I bought "Live in Japan" for like $85 (an outrageous price) when it first
came out in 1985. A friend in Japan brought it to Vegas, and I paid her for
it. It was the most awsome video I'd ever seen. One of his very, very best.
I've still got the original tape released in Japan.

I have it on the original VHS tape which was sold in Japan. The tape jacket
is covered with Japanese writing. And the tape is clear as a bell.

I found myself in mid-general music conversation at work yesterday and
having to remind myself to Be Nice when the subject turned to artists
who have degenerated to just selling albums. I'm that Frustrated,
Disappointed, P*&ssed at that Man.

To me, to be able to produce such beautiful music, to be surrounded by
creative, energetic, enthusiastic people and allow such ... is a
disgrace and shameful. An performer who phones in a performance
because the check cleared is an insult not only to the audience but
also to those folks who actually work hard at their craft.

To charge such outrageous figures for the Pleasure of His Company for
5 minutes and then complain because he's just a commodity ... selling
cheap goods on a website to those folks who haven't figured out that
their presence is not wanted, just their money...

I used to have a lot of respect and admiration for the man. No more.
I hear cuts from the older albums and remember how much pleasure and
joy I felt when I first heard them. I hear the new stuff and cringe.
If this new album is the best he's done in years, words cannot begin
to describe what I feel.

Perhaps life didn't turn out the way he'd dreamed, but if he's that
miserable then I'd suggest he find a better way to spend his time. He
really is turning into the joke that people thought he was way back
when.

And that is just plain sad.

I doubt that it will be radically different as he has to appeal to the
Vegas audience. At least 95% of the audience are civilians who only
know "Mandy" "Copa" and "I Write The Songs", and they come to see him
sing these songs. I'm hoping that with the hiring of Jeffrey
Hornaday, that the show doesn't appear to be too staged and does leave
some room for him to throw in some of the lesser known songs (unknown
by the civilians) that the fans love. Perhaps some of these gems
will appear around the Convention shows. Only time will tell.

No matter what advice he's getting, ultimately it's his choice. If he's
allowing someone else to push him away from his creative path, perhaps new
management would fix the problem. But that's NEVER gonna happen (for
obvious reasons). So he's doing what he's chosen to do.

Once in a while he still shows a glimpse of that creativity, like the
brilliant arrangements and recordings on "In The Swing Of Christmas."
(Sorry, Dave.) Hopefully "Fifteen Minutes" will be 180 degrees from
"Barry Covers the Greatest Songs of Latvia."

Sure, he has to sing them. But present them in a different way. He used to
do that in concerts. But he hasn't changed much of anything in probably six
years. Maybe new blood will help.

I haven't followed Barry's career and/or shows for the last couple of
years, but I have read bits and pieces here and here. I remember when
it was noticed that he had apparently started smoking again. Given
that his mother died from smoking, it seemed like the height of lunacy
for him to take up the habit again. But in a sad, sick way, it made
sense to me. If he's desperately unhappy with his life, but for
whatever reason (mind control, lack of a backbone, depression) he
can't get out of it, so he passive-agressively does the one thing he
can do. Attempt to ruin his health and voice so that he won't have to
do it any more. Stranger things have happened.

Interesting hypothesis. Self-destruction as a means to escape something he
doesn't really want to do. If that's the case, I wonder if he'd still be
smoking if he had wanted to stay with Concord, and never signed as a Vegas
headliner. Something to ponder.

But maybe he simply has an addictive personality. And instead of alcohol,
like his mother, perhaps it's nicotine. A double addiction: Nicotine and
Clive Davis. ;^)

BTW, I wonder if maybe he's been smoking all along, and just recently decided
to do it in public where paparazzi and fans can see it. After all, he's
pretty good at hiding realities.
