Did you all catch the Pandora Ice Skating Special today? LOVED that he sang "Where You Go" from Harmony! My favorite song from that show!

Also, adorable that the little 10 year-old skated to "I Am Your Child".

Barry was in fine voice for that performance.

Second, is everybody noticing the new percussion track under "Mandy"? Holy Cow! Nothing like taking a 40 year-old song and making it brand new again!

Any thoughts?

Why can't he do that with some of his other
hits. Remember the Spanish guitar flavored
Copacabana from the first Live By Request?
Something totally different but good.

He did it a few years ago with LLWMI. I remember being blown away by the new arrangement for that one, too. He does do small changes all the time, but this one, with Mandy, was quite dramatic...and that has song needed tweaking for a LONG time now.

I think it's time to do something with IMITTR also. I have always been uncomfortable with the key change on that one. It feels like it should go to a different key than the one they chose. What do ya say, Barry? How about a dramatic change to that song!

I don't know if it qualifies as a dramatic change, but he's been singing the first verse a capella for awhile now. It definitely gives it a different "feel".

I haven't heard that, Suzan. I haven't seen Barry in concert in a couple of years. I'm sure that's a nice change-up, but I would still like to see a new arrangement done for the entire song - with a possible new key at the modulation. I'll bet he can do it.

Hi Chris,
I have many thoughts on the show today which from my viewpoint was superb musically and better than his last skating special. What make this skating special better than the "Star Skates" special years ago was that Barry performed live in all of the songs; in the previous skating show, he only performed live in the last 15 minutes of the show.
I also want to add that Barry is very generous to share his time in the show to work with the skaters and to not being the dominant figure in every song. Not every artist would agree to work with skaters on a TV special as the skaters may upstage the artist. So Barry was superb to change the arrangements of his songs to suit the choreographed skating numbers.
There were many highlights that got my attention- 1) hearing "Where You Go" with skater Michael Weiss 2) hearing the original arrangement of "Could It Be Magic" with Barry playing the four last notes solo on the piano added to the skating of Sasha Cohen 3) hearing Barry ending "Mandy" sounding like a classical music pianist worked well with the skating of Nancy Kerrigan and 4) Barry performing "One Voice" with a choir and having one skater coming to the ice one at a time during the song made the effect very dramatic.
The concert/ skating show had a nice blend musically of both Barry's hit songs and album cuts. Hearing "Turn The Radio Up", "Where You Go", "Dancing In The Dark", "Dancing Fool" was refreshing and the seldom heard arrangements of many of the hits like CIBM, Mandy, One Voice made the show seem quite different than other Barry concerts.
We can only hope that Barry's run on Broadway will be as interesting in terms of selected songs and arrangements as Barry's performance on the skating show was. Marvin

I horoughly enjoyed the skating special -- and, I was at the last one.
although I don't remember him only performing the last 15 minutes but
it's been a number of years since I watched that video. I was
horribly sick with bronchits when we attended that taoing so my memory
is realy hazy.

Did anyone notice he introduced Muffy as Sharon (her real name?)

And -- Kristi Yamaguchi said that he'd been in the music business 6
decades? Guess she's counting that "record your own voice" when he
was 2. :-)

Because if he's in for 6 decades, we've been doing this alot longer
than I thought.

And, Michael Weiss is from here in McLean, Virginia. I usually attend
his skating scholorship fundraisers he holds in October -- so now I'll
have something to ask about.

Hi Sharon,
Glad you liked the show as much as I did. His last show had mostly the skaters working to audio tapes of his songs, and Barry sang live for about the final four to five songs in the show. The highlight was his duet with Kristi in "You Made Me Feel So Young" and ended with a spirited "Copacabana" and "Where Does The Time Go". It was a good show, but having Barry do all the songs for the skaters live made this show better. Marvin

At this moment my 12 year old daughter is listening to Where You Go on YouTube. She fell in love with it while listening to the ice show last night.

Asked her if she wants to go see Barry and she said only if he does Even Now like he does it on the Live in London album. She loves the big endings! Just like her mama.

The skating was as important to the show as Barry was. Without the choreographed skating, Barry probably would not have altered the arrangements of his hit songs to suit the abilities of the skaters. It is also possible that the song list for the show came from requests from the skaters or choreographer Steven Cousins to perform their routines to selected Manilow songs. Marvin
