PACIFICA - Raymond R. Karczewski of Pacifica was arrested last night after shooting a mannequin in a Bay area discount clothing store. Karczewski, 31, is also a veteran patrol officer who has walked a beat for the Pacifica Police Department for five years. Karczewksi was working as a part-time security guard at Fela's Discount Store. He allegedly reported for duty intoxicated and mistook a mannequin for a fleeing burglar. Three shots were fired, with two going astray and one striking the mannequin in the left heel. Frightened members of the night cleaning crew witnessed the incident, reporting that Karczewski had a habit of bizarre behavior but this was the first time he had discharged his pistol.
The weapon used in the incident is reported to be Karczewski's police issue revolver, although the department has refused to comment, saying only that the incident is under investigation. They did confirm, however, that Karczewski has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation and a psychiatric evaluation.
