(im not complaining, im stating a fact)
i went to tower records today. and picked up a magizine called, "speak."
and it had this quote, "pop music is movement and art that takes its cue from
pop music is simpily stopping the music. musicians know this-more than that
the music knows it."
what does everyone think of this? :)
im not looking for arguements just opinions.

hmm..i didn't know pop music had anything to do with art. i thought it was all
about fame and money.
if art is borrowing from pop music...
then i guess art couldn't claim purity
if it were relying on pop music for inspiration.
imo - pop music is epitome of insincerity.
blech blech blech.
why can't musicians just be true to themselves? AT is.
blah blah blah...that's all i really want to say on the subject. thanks for
bringing it up though. *hug for heather*

"Have a heart, Betty. I'm not fireproof" - soft boys
the article it came in veered off in all sorts of directions but it was rather
interesting.
you should go read it, if you can.

OK, I'm confused. But I suspect it is just because we have gotten lost in the
words. You must have a narrower definition of pop music that the one I work
with. Because I thought AT WAS pop music, of the highest order. I'm all for fame
and money too. That would be good. As long as it's for sincere efforts of real
musical talents. And I'm starry-eyed optimistic enough to think that's what will
happen. I'm only opposed to fame and money for the same old stuff. I am in favor
of rewards for innovative, interesting, kitchen sink, high energy power pop.

it goes on to say that "in the sneer of penelope houston (of the 'frisco punk
band the avengers) puts into "ahrt," though, is the whole story of the gulf
between pop music and any work that gets to use the word ART without explaining
itself. The gulf--the distrust."
*that* was interesting. i thought anyway.
la la la
I have a broad interpretation of "pop music"...I don't limit
the genre to "pop art" which is a literal period of time in art
history (Warhol's soup cans or Marilyn being good examples:
both brash, cheeky examples when snooty art circles were being turned on
their ears by artists questioning the reality of the times)
...or to a type of music that is just out for the mainstream
buck (like bubblegum pop or boy bands).
Pop music to me is... hooking melodies and harmonies; often
stringing together visual images (which could easily inspire
other forms of art)..sometimes impressionistic or
melancholy or kitchensinky or cheeky or high energy . Often the artist
turns his song back on himself, twists the knife or laughs at
himself.

probably missing the point.
but I'd like to see where this thread leads.
..
Me too. I think we need more info Heather. In your quote:
"pop music is movement and art that takes its cue from
pop music is simply stopping the music. musicians know this-more than that
the music knows it."
What art forms derived from pop music are they supposed to be opposed to? And
who are "they"? Is this the opinion of one performer, the author of the
article, or do they speak for all pop musicians as being against art derived
from pop music? Just these little snips sound somewhat pretentious. There
must be more to it.

about six pages more to it.
hm? from what i understand of the article...
they are saying that pop music today is getting the credit of "art" when
really, it's nothing more then mumbo jumbo. (my terms, no theirs)
it's the pople trusting the music companies to put out quality music when
really, it's not. :)
*that's* what i THINK they are trying to say but honestly, those quotes are
what stood out to me.
hm.
Hmm. I really don't care if they want to label it art or not. It can be
called art and still be crap so far as I'm concerned. If they are concerned
about the tendency of the music companies to support bland and uninteresting
music because it is a safer bet for them than to take a chance on innovative
and new sounds, then I agree, music companies can't be trusted to have our
best interest at heart.

And that's what I think AT is.
I hope.

Yep, that's what you are. And we sure do like it.

Yup. I'd say you have all of your criterion amply covered. Plus more. It's
kind of hard to define, but one thing I find appealing about AT is the obvious
enjoyment you all show for your work. From the recorded songs we can see the
talent for writing and performing the music, but from a live performance the
enthusiasm for the show is really a whole added dimension. There is an artistic
element in the performance as well as the material, and AT is that as well.

Linda
i like that definition. you should put it on your webpage.

That's kinda what I was thinking, too. There's varying degrees of "poppiness".
Sorry, old post, I know.

Interesting thread, BTW.
