An ASP in the GRASS is a SNAKE but, a GRASP in the ASS is a GOOSE!!!
There's always crudités (baby carrots, celery, cuke spears,
broccoli, cauliflower, white mushrooms, cherry and/or grape
tomatoes, bell pepper wedges, etc) and some kind of sour
cream dip (mix with Knorr's Onion or Spinach Soup mix and
throw into a bread boule); there's pita wedges (chop up pita
bread) and some of the now many varieties of humus (also
good with crudités), any variety of cheeses (cut into small
and maybe decorative slices) and crackers; cheese fondue is
making a comeback (serve with a variety of breads); little
meatballs (use beef and/or turkey; mix *gently* with rice,
bread crumbs, and egg; bake; arrange nicely over romaine
leaves) with a variety of dipping sauces (teriyaki, duck,
bbq, ranch dressing, catsup, honey dijon)...
How about chocolate fondue, with a variety of fruits
(pineapple, apple, peach, strawberry, banana, etc), with
perhaps a side of caramel (available in microwaveable tubs
in your grocer's fruit section)? With maybe nuts nearby.
Sautéed or broiled scallops on toothpicks, fried calamari
rings, bacon-wrapped short lengths of beef; perhaps some
rollups (tortillas now come in spinach and in tomato, with
appropriate colors), either premade and cut short on the
diagonal or let the guests create their own from a "fixin's
bar"...
Check the freezer section and pick up some frozen phyllo
dough. Open the box and the bag inside and lay out the
premade layers (cover with a slightly damp teatowel to keep
fresh, or they dry out). If you have a mini-muffin tin, you
can spray the insides of the tin with oil then cut a few
layers of phyllo into small squares (about 2 to 3 inches),
stack them 4 deep, turning each layer 45 degrees, then push
each 4-stack into one of the muffin cups; bake until
slightly brown, then fill with whatever you're inspired to.
Hot crab and cream cheese; chicken ala king, bbq shelled
shrimp, quiche filling (rebake to set), minced mushroom
sautéed with sliced beef/veal/what-have-you. You could even
slice apples (or peaches or apricots) and mix with a little
cinnamon, lemon juice, flour and sugar (and maybe walnuts)
and rebake. Maybe pour in a little vanilla pudding, sauté
fruits (berries, apricots, etc) in fruit preserves or jam,
then lightly top the pudding with the mixture. Maybe mash
whole cloves of garlic, mix into cream cheese, then fill the
phyllo cups.
Bake garlic (cut off the top of an entire bulb, maybe
several, and drizzle some olive oil over it; bake until
soft), then serve with small crusts of bread and several
butter knives.
Spinach balls (10-oz box of spinach cooked and drained,
blender-pulverise some stuffing mix, throw in some grated
cheese and an egg or two, salt and pepper; form balls and
bake or sauté); make ahead, freeze, reheat in the oven,
serve with lemon wedges.
Is that a good start?

one too many food magazines, too few parties
Take thin slices of deli roast beef, spread with softened cream cheese and
wrap around a pickle (works with dill or sweet). You can slice these into
rounds or just eat them long.
Take a brick of cream cheese and pour a can of mini-shrimp over it. Then
pour cocktail sauce (make your own with ketchup and horseradish to control
the spice level) over top and serve with crispy crackers--my favorites are
Carr's, Bremmer Wafers, and seaweed crackers.
Take an eggplant and slice it really thin--maybe 1/4 or 1/8 inch. Lay the
slices on a rack that's in a cookie pan, and place in a 350 oven for about
10 minutes. Pull them out, brush with olive oil, turn the slices over and
brush with more olive oil. Sprinkle whatever spices the kids will eat (I
like cumin, cayenne, and rosemary, but you might be better off with rosemary
and oregano) and roast another ten minutes or until the thinnest ones start
to blacken around the edges. I hate eggplant and this is terrific! It
comes out chewy and with a roasted flavor.
You can never go wrong with tater tots. Put them in a chafing dish for that
festive air.
Take a wedge or wheel of Brie, heat it gently in a 200/250 oven for about
five minutes or until soft but not falling apart. Spread a layer of
marmalade, strawberry jam, or if your kids are really picky, grape jelly
(though if they're that picky, don't waste Brie on them :) ), over top.
Serve with crackers, or toasted rounds of nice herbal bread.
Bruschetta--take a day-old or so loaf of Italian bread, cut into rounds and
brush with olive oil. Top with chopped tomatoes, chopped basil (fresh if
you can get it) and broil until golden brown and crisp. You can also add
fresh mozzarella cheese to the top, and the kids can pretend it's pizza.
You can never go wrong with make-your-own-ice-cream-sundaes, with dark
chocolate sauce with a little Grand Marnier and real whipped cream (done
with a mixer) for the grown-ups. Drain the juice out of a jar of maraschino
cherries and refill with liquer the night before for an extra treat, but
make sure the kids don't sneak in and drink the juice out of the jar (can
you tell I had a misspent youth in a very white suburban way?)
An easy one is those TGI Fridays frozen spinach dip.
Warm artichoke dip--drain two cans of artichoke hearts and mix with 1 cup
mayo and 1 cup parmesan cheese. Serve with warm crusty bread or pita bread
or that yummy crisp bread with herbs they sell at some gourmet food shops.
Home-made Guacamole is yummy. Two or three ripe avocados, mix with the
juice of a lime, chopped fresh garlic, chopped tomato, salt and pepper,
cilantro. (I also add cayenne and cumin). Serve with a brand of tortilla
chips that's actually made in Mexico--they'll have that extra grease
component that helps it all go down smoothly and speeds your diet-related
resolutions the next day.
Supermarket sushi is easy, or if you live near a good Japanese restaurant,
carrying out a box is just as cheap and a lot fresher.
Have a great party! I have to go eat, now...

this is also good with ham, we used to spread deli ham with cream chease and
put a scallion in the middle then roll them up and cut into rounds..
>Take a brick of cream cheese and pour a can of mini-shrimp over it. Then

another variation of this, use imitation crab meat (my gramma used to do this)
the crab with the cream cheese over ritz crackers and then put coctail sauce on
top...

Cheese tarts (there are quite a few recipies out there) that can be done
in those mini tart shells you can get at the store (good even when you
do it with the store brand phyllo dough)
Hmm... there's a *wonderfully* yummy honey tart (honey and egg? or
something else... tasted a bit like toasted marshmallow) that was served
at the Barony of Lochmere's Night on Board event last spring that
*might* be on the Atlantian moas.atlantia.sca.org website (links page
maybe? or cooks guild if there is one?)... renn. period *and* delicious
warm or cold :-)
Get those *little* mini-muffin pans and make brownies, little cakes,
little muffins (or anything else along those lines you can think of) in
them. *g* If you've got kids this is something they'll *love* to both
help make and try out later on.

Maybe turkey, lox, or a large scalded cabbage leaf (to make
it limp enough) for those who don't eat red meat?

I loved mixing *lots* of crushed garlic with cream cheese
and parsley flakes (and/or chives), spreading on one of
those fancy crackers, and topping with a smoked baby oyster
(comes in cans like sardines)...

Yep, that's me: I gots no life.
Well, actually, I *used-ta* have a life, but it got lost in
the nasty divorce (still clawing my way to the top of that)
and then age and gravity set in (hitting 50 soon), and no
money and no car make for precious little social life, so...
Used to have fierce insomnia (I had the reputation of never
sleeping), but now that I'm eating brazil nuts (high in
selenium, a mineral necessary for the formation of
seratonin, which the brain relies upon for sleep), I have
difficulty staying awake past 11 pm. Unfortunately, last
night it was working well.
No matter; needed the rest. (And BTW: the 11:45 time was an
estimation; it was somewhere between 11:25 and 11:45, so
erred on the side of least embarrassment; who knew it would
become a competition...)
Fell asleep after "Judging Amy" (TV Guide promised Amy and
Maxine would be at an overnight roleplaying game in an 18th
century setting; it lied) and during the following local
live broadcast from Baltimore's Inner Harbor; boring. And
this after getting home from work and miraculously locating
an unopened Yuengling Porter (the only alcohol in the
house); awoke at dawn with the bottle still unopened (but
toasted the New Year with it anyway). Then fell asleep
again.

too wild to believe
Recipe for homemade "Boursin"
2 8 oz pkgs. softened cream cheese
1 8 oz container of unsalted whipped butter
1 to 2 Tblsp garlic (to taste)
1 Tblsp oregano
1 tsp basil tsp marjoram
1 tsp thyme
1 tsp fresh ground pepper
mix together and chill.
Excellent as a cracker spread, even better spread on rare thin sliced
roast beef and wrapped around grilled asparagus spears.

My favorite, "Ugly Dip":
1 lb. lean hamburger
1 lb. sausage
16 oz. salsa
16 oz. velvita
Brown meat & drain. Add salsa & cheese & simmer until cheese is completely
melted. Serve warm with chips.
You can also add roasted bell peppers or add a little heat with spicy
sausage & spicy salsa. Its awful to look at, is against all doctor's orders
but absolutely addicting.

To E-mail: pull the "withacanospammy" out of my addy - it hurts!
Lets see... ended up being not feeling great and not really in the mood to
cook but....
throw a breakfast casserole togther first and put it away in the fridge..
that way no one could bug me much about food in the morning! togther with
Biscuits and my daughter's "beetlejuice" (beetlejuice = 1/2 grape juice, 1/2
sprite) this was a fine brunch!
ok, made my braunshweiger cheese ball, and a crab meat cheese ball to serve
with crackers.. ( assorted boxes....)
made homemade salsa, and homemade guacamole served with tortilla chips, made
a cheese dip.. ( no bean chilli and cheese wiz) served with the tortilla
chips as well, chips and onion dip, meatballs in that grape jelly/chilli
sauce mix, little smokies with BBQ sauce, beef taquitos from the frozen food
section, skyline chilli hot pocket things cut into bit size pieces...( my
youngest daughter found these at the Super walmart in Owensboro, HAD to have
them.. she loves skyline! loves to go to cinicnnati for every trip ha ah )
and Cooked, peeled shrimps.. lots of them.. ( I usually get uncooked, and
cook them myself, but 6 yr old has trouble peeling and eats more than anyone
else. Everyone gets annoyed helping him peel them so, made it easy this
year!) with cocktail sauce...
all this along with 4 bottles of sparkling grape juice and 4 bottles of
sparkling apple cider.
not a bad deal... all in all... even if I wanted to be in bed...
Now if anyone wants to share the recipes for the jello shots.. I would be
interested.. have never made any but have had a few in my time....
