Since it has come up on AFR, and came up at Ohio last week,
some further comments--based on mine and Gaffer's experience:

Of course you are drinking water, ideally also eating pickles or
otherwise replacing sodium. Before you feel signs of heat exhaustion
or worse, consider the following:

If you are drinking, you should also be urinating, at least a little.
If you aren't, you're not drinking enough.

If you are urinating, consider the color (yes, I know there are
some biological difficulties with this for women, but try to look).

Normal pee is clear to light yellow. Under the circumstances noted,
it should be about dirty yellow. If it is brownish, you are not
drinking enough.

All the above assumes you do not have some other condition which
would change your normal color.

And of course, the old standby--put a little salt on your tongue--
if it doesn't taste salty, get more salt, GatorAde, or similar
electrolyte replacement fast.

And, of course, avoid alcohol--diuretic, and cola--ditto, and
sugar (makes you feel thirstier). "Dragon sweat" (lemonade with
a pinch or two of salt) works nicely for me, along with water.

adding some signs that I have learned being a street hawker/street gigger/
water woman:

1. do they look unnaturally white/pale?
2. do they look unnaturally dry?
3. are they tempurature extreme in a core spot? too hot/ too cold in
their armpits?
4. glazed and/or confused look to their eyes?
5. slow to respond or abnormal answers to common questions? (where are you?
who are you ? when were you born? what day is it?)

1, of course being the least, and 5 being the worst.

get them stopped, cooled off, and drinking water.

Wet rags work well on exposed body parts.

Ladies lose or loosen up that bodice.

Gentlemen if you are wearing a doublet or higher, get it off.

DO NOT PUT ICE ON ANYONE'S NECK *EVER*
Can induce shock.

if you have someone who goes down, get security to get you and EMT *right
now*. Do not pass go, do not be "nice". I really don't care if you think
you are going to be "all right". I would much rather hear it from trained
personnel. Better to be safe than sorry and go for a ride in the meat wagon.

and the urinating? we have a rule. Pee 3 times and you get a gold star.

Alchohol? Don't drink if its over 90 degrees. Please. Save us all some
trouble. Leave the drinking for at night. or late afternoon. Nobody wants to
use you as a buffet table.

*nod* Me, the woman who never adds extra salt to ANYTHING, I always add
salt to my lunch on hot faire days... Steak on a stake wiht extra salt

Kinda scared the hell outta myself the other day. Takes me four to five
hours to get to DC from Jersey. Had one Mt. Dew first thing in the
morning (sorry, need the caffiene, despite the fact that it's a
diuretic, because of the MS I NEED that jolt in the morning), then a
biggie lemonade, then a Sobe. Didn't need to hit a rest stop the entire
day. THAT concerned me.

If you are a performer at MDRF and see me in the street (or in the
booth), DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK ME TO GET YOU SOME WATER. The last thing
that we want to see is a performer go down because getting themselves a
lemonade or a glass of water is out of character... If you stop by my
booth while I'm working and you're performing, you can bet your bottom
I'm gonna ask you if you'd like a glass of water, and you better damn
well take me up on it.... *smile* I have let very few get out of my
sight without at least getting a partial refill... :) (and if you happen
to be a dragon, you get extra water poured down the back of your costume
and a good fanning while you're at it, dragons seem to have a problem
with heat dissipation, that's why they spout flames... This might
explain why we haven't seen ED at faire lately either...) :)

Normally, I personally really don't sweat. This last weekend, I was
sweating like there was no tomorrow, the humidity was terrible. Had I
stopped sweating again, I might have been really concerned.

This has been a horrible year in our area so far in terms of that. Most
people are gonna be sweating bullets. don't let yourself get dehydrated,
it's not a pretty sight.

This is one thing I really stress as the Raven Maven at TnRF. I have
been known to snuggle up to folx and whisper to them "have you peed
today?". We keep Sekanjabin & water backstage and when I go out to
water the fairies I always do a cup check... if it's not wet... I'm not
happy. I prefer Sekanjabin over the gatorade myself as do many of our
cast members. It's easy to make & store and you can do various
flavors. http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/cariadoc/drinks.html#2 I've made
it with fresh mint leaves but I've *also* made it using extracts...
mint, lemon and almond... experimenting is fun. At faire, I have the
slaveys... um, I mean gracious volunteers... fill a large cooler with
ice and water and then add syrup until the liquid is slightly colored.
Taste will vary according to how much syrup you put in and I don't want
it to be too sweet. The other two things I do to combat the heat are to
put peppermint oil into a bowl of cool/cold water (beginning of day)
with some 'rags' (I use cloth leftover from costume making... one bowl
of white for nobles & one of varied for others)... these can be laid
across the back of the neck, stuffed down an bodice etc... I also put
peppermint oil into a spray bottle of water (actually... two)... when
cast comes backstage after being in the chess match out in the direct
sun I stand in the middle of the road waiting for them with one of the
bottles to spray them down... in the face (eyes closed!), on the neck,
down the front & back of their costumes... I've never had a problem with
this hurting costumes. I know someone who uses lavender instead but I
don't find it as cooling and it's not as acceptable to a large number of
folx.

Humm..... Has anybody ever made Sekanjabin with one of the artificial sweetners
such as Splenda (www.splenda.com) ? It might be the thing for those of us
that are on a low-carb diet or those that are diabetic and don't want/care-for
the sugar.

Yikes.

This is the first I've heard of this, and in fact when I tried to check this
phenomenon out, I found several websites regarding heat stroke treatment,
including the ones below, which advocated ice packs on the neck area for
cooling. No mention of related shock though. If that's a risk, I'd like to
know more. I'm wondering how you found out about this, and whether it only
occurs under certain circumstances?

My understanding is that ice against the skin is bad period. Wrapped
in a cloth or something (i.e. the whole cold wet cloth thing) it works
fine, but unadulterated ice on skin is just plain too much.

I have not done so yet, although I'll probably be trying it because my
dh just got put on a no food diet (low carb/sugar/fat). Is there any
particular sweetener which makes a syrup well? Because that's key in
making this.

The mint water does the same for me... as well as a number of the cast
members... so far as bug repelling nature of various scents... some of
that depends on your personal body chemistry... some rats... I mean,
fortunate individuals, like my husband, don't attract bugs at all

As many of you know, I wear armor--a back and breast and a helmet--to faire
every faire day all faire day. And yes, "I'm hot, but I'm used to it." in
answer to the inevitable question. I am a prime target for going down.

At VARF about 3 years ago, when I was relatively new to faire, I had to lie
down for a couple of hours one day after the noon parade because I was
overheated. Since then, before I walk into faire every day, without fail, I
drink 20oz of GatorAid and from a pint to a liter of water. I also keep
drinking through the day and monitor the number of times I "pump bilges" and
the color of the "bilge water". I have not had a serious problem with the
heat since I started doing this.

Be careful out there, folks. Mother Nature and her heat pump ain't nothing
to fool with.
