I think that is correct. As long as humanity exists only on one
planet, any local catastrophe can wipe us out entirely.

Venus is a bit on the hot side. Mars is a much better bet.

Another alternative is large artificial colonies in space.

I'm not sure though whether biological humans can do this.
Perhaps only the next generation can do it, those beings that
will come after us, after human or artificial intelligence is
applied to accelerate evolution.

To say nothing of the low population density
in much of South America. How about Australia's
vast underpopulated regions?
