Detonate naphthalene and potassium chlorate

I read somewhere that naphthalene and potassium chlorate will
detonate. I tried it and got it to detonate a couple of ways but if
you light it, it just burns like a typical aromatic hydrocarbon. One
power advantage is the high ratio of carbon to hydrogen in this fuel.
- It loses little power in converting a lot of water to vapor -
translation bigger boom.

Confined it detonated with a bit of flash primer or with very small
potassium chlorate-antimony trisulfide electronic primer. Confined
with a fuse - nada.

I used a 60:40 mix Ox:red but wondered if there was any information
on ratio optimization or sensitivity available. It is quite vigorous
as my ear still hurts from a confined 500 mg blast that had a
suprising volume. Best of all it stays moth free.

Don't know, right now I am trolling for information but it is chlorate
based and that's not good shock wise. I have not looked at any other
oxidizers yet as I was hoping that someone would have an optimized
formulation for the naphthalene/chlorate. Since it requires
containment and a primer, it is time consuming to do the
optimization. Perchlorate could be better and there are a host of
polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons that have even higher C:H ratios. And
what about Bucky balls?

I suppose your formulation falls into the Cheddite category of explosives.

Cheddites contain nitro aromatics, this is nitro free so it is only
similar.

Not sure. I know one improvised explosive was made with KClO3 and vaseline

There is a reason this didn't work for them, however, if you want to know why... you will have to

"As noted in table 3, several attempts were made to initiate the potassium chlorate/Vaseline
mixture. [At room temperature.] The first two attempts used Number 8 detonators and
Deltasheet boosters. In the second attempt, the Detasheet booster was increased
appreciably.

"Figure 16 shows the results of the initiation attempt using a larger than usual Detasheet booster.
The end cap and some of the pipe [12 x 1 1/2" caped at both ends.] nearest the booster
was fractured into small pieces. This result may have been caused almost completely by the
booster. It is difficult to determine if any appreciable reaction of the potassium chlorate/Vaseline
mixture occurred at all.

"In the remaining two shots with potassium chlorate/Vaseline, both with a squib and coiled primacord
were used in attempt to initiate an energetic reaction in this mixture. Both of these efforts also
failed to produce evidence of reaction, and further studies of this mixture were terminated."

Thanks for running it through your database - some are close but
contain mixed oxidizers - maybe to desensitize. If I get a bit of
time tomorrow, I will do an impact test. Petrolatum (Vasoline) I
believe is a saturated hydrocarbon and will therefore produce about
three times as much water on reaction. It takes a lot of energy to
convert liquid water into an expanding gas (you have to break some
strong hydrogen bonds)- perhaps too much to sustain propagation. A
number 8 blasting cap is rather heroic compared to the tiny popper
(about 10-20 mg) of chlorate,Sb2O3 or the bit of flash for the fused
test. The naphthalene chlorate mix is probably related more to the
whistle mixes - which can make a rather loud bang in a rocket motor or
as a burst charge.

Keep in mind that if we knew what we were doing it would not be called
research
