Those people are insane. They find something what looks like a BOMB,
gather around and look down to investigate instead of waiting for some
Experts like the Bomb Squad and keep distance, no they do not with
brutal consequences. Viewers Discretion Is strongly Advised.

This popped up in another newsgroup http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,190582,00.html

After considerable discussion it has not yet been resolved whether this was a 40mm gun projectile
or a 40mm grenade (my bet).

"Tramp" explosives or detonators are like
poisonous snakes -- usually strike when least
expected. More often than not, they badly maim
or destroy the eyesight or other parts of the
body of their victims.

Don I would agree 100 % it would be a 40mm grenade. These have a high dude rate due to
the operation of the so called "always activating fuse", especially those with the "graze
feature" . They are famous for going off later when someone drops one. Kids have actually
played catch with them, often only going off when they missed the catch and it hits hard
ground. I have been out on such calls years ago

If memory serves me right this is actually in Ankara, Turkey. The explosion
was caused by an IED contained in the bag the Police officer was looking in
(note how he had a radio on his hip.. obviously not too concerned about
EED's). What makes this even more incredulous is that it occurred just
after a similar device had already functioned in the same area, so what
possessed them to gather around and rech into the bag I'll never know.

5 inches long (as stated in the story) would make it a 40 mm grenade
for sure.
