"public property"?

Perhaps, but they are allowed to use whatever name they want (unless it
runs afoul of a trademark). It might be defensible in that the original
business was owned by the McDonald brothers, so they were the McDonalds.
The business was bought from from, so that could explain the name.

I used to buy vegetables from a farm shop, where the farm was owned by
an old man called McDonald.
