Every time someone says "you know" I think to myself "I don't know.
That's why I'm listening to you". On one or two occasions I've even
said it out loud.

One honourable English teacher in my country said that such
"parasite-words" as 'you know' help to mitigate tension during the
speech betwixt people. To my mind, 'you know' is beautiful :-)
