How many of you belong to an electric coop? If so, do you receive a
monthly magazine from them with little tidbits of information on how
to save energy in you home? Well, I do and most of the time I don't
actually read the magazine. But, today I did and let me share with you
some of the tidbits of information it told me.
1. Turn computers and monitors off when not in use. I know that some
computer places will tell you to leave your computer running,
especially if you are hooked into the internet. They might give you
the reason that your computer has to run diagnostic programs late at
night or early in the morning. They might tell you that your computer
has a sleep mode. Well, computers consume a considerable about of
energy and shutting them down when not in use is not going to hurt
them, but it will save you money.
2. Make sure electric blankets are turned off in the morning. I don't
have much use for an electric blanket, but I can imagine what type of
risk factor this could cause if left on.
3. Turn the water bed heater off when not needed. Now this one I would
not necessarily agree with. I do have a water bed and I know that the
slightest change in temperature makes a huge difference. If you turn
it off and it cools down too much, it will take too long to warm up
again. I would have to not agree with this suggestion.
4. Turn large-screen TVs off completely when not in use. Televisions
are notorious for using a lot of energy. Make sure your TV is off,
completely off when you shut it off.
5. Turn off stereos and radios when not in use. How many times have
you walked into your kids room and found their radio or stereo on?
Kids are terrible about turning things off. They are often in such a
hurry to get out with their friends that they just forget. Try to make
this a habit with them they won't forget.
6. Remember to turn off hair curling irons and hot rollers. How many
of you ladies have left your curling iron on and left it sitting on
the bathroom counter, only to remember and find that it's burned a
nice mark on the counter. These two items can cause fires if left on
and unattended. Be careful.
7. Turn off coffee makers when not in use. I've been guilty of this. I
actually had left a coffee maker on over night and woke up to coffee
that had burned and stuck to the bottom. I was lucky that I didn't
cause a fire. Be careful.
8. Turn off pool pump and/or heater when not needed. Pool pumps and
heaters can consume a lot of energy. If your pool is not in use for
the winter, shut everything down that is not absolutely necessary.
9. Unplug battery charges when not needed and make sure heat tape is
off when not needed.
10. Ensure all new appliances you purchase are Energy Star approved.
This is usually right on the door or somewhere on the front of your
new appliance. Energy Star products were made to help save you energy,
which in turn saves you money.
