i'm currently looking through some of my dylan books for elvis content
and found this quote from 1980 where dylan speaks about his comeback
tour of 1974:

"when elvis did 'that's all right, mama' in 1955, it was sensitivity
and power. in 1969 it was just full-out power. there was nothing other
than just force behind that. i've fallen into that trap, too. take the
1974 tour. it's a very fine line you have to walk to stay in touch with
something once you've created it...either it holds up for you or it
doesn't."

he touches a nerve here, doesn't he?

Another reason that Dylan is so much greater than Elvis.

i wouldn't say so.
but it shows that dylan was looking very closely at what elvis did and
learning some lessons from it...

I dont think it touches a nerve. Dylan was a great musical analyst, and
he is probably right. But I think every performer falls into that TRAP
that he speaks of. Vocal attributes aside, it would be hard for anyone
to replicate the attitude and enthusiasms of there youth.

that's certainly true. on the other hand i would say the sensitivity
that the old rock'n'roll songs are lacking in las vegas is definitely
there when elvis sings the contemporary country/soul ballads.
but i have to admit that i can also appreciate raw full-out power in
music and i definitely would have enjoyed ALL of a las vegas 69-show...

It is unrealistic for people or Dylan to expect Elvis to sing the
oldies the same way he did when he was young.

that was shot after a night of heavy partying. speed was the drug of
the day. it's an outtake of dylan's 1966 tourfilm "eat the document",
which starts with a sequence of dylan snorting something
and laughing hysterically into the camera. the film remained
unreleased...
