Elvis hated blacks, right? (Ray Charles)

I read an interview with Ray Charles in which Ray had some very negative
things to say about Elvis; Ray claimed Elvis only ripped off black musicians,
etc.
Mary J. Blige calls Elvis an extreme racist. (!)

I know Elvis claimed that blacks could only buy his records and shine
his shoes in the '50's, but it seems that Elvis must really have looked up to
black musicians. What's the real story? Did Elvis hate blacks as much as
blacks hate Elvis?

Unfortunately some of the black population keep this rumor going. Just
jealous because Elvis has sold the most and is at the top of the mountain
and Freakboy isn't. You can bring up all the evidence you want that shows
Elvis was not a racist and they won't believe you.

Don't know HOW or WHERE or WHEN that rumor got started but:

1. It is as FAR from the Truth as one can get.
2. Jet magazine, the nation's largest black reader magazine, assigned one
of its best reporters to chase that "quote" down and after a year of
research (unlike the Weasel's "research"), said writer wrote (a) that he
could find NO trace Elvis ever uttered that and (b) all the blacks he talked
with who knew Elvis, who had associations with Elvis, said it could never be
true.

It's just something that keeps rising up from time to time, like the RUMOR
of Elvis still being alive.

Incidentally, I plan to bring this very quote to the fore when I publish my
new book next month -- talking to numerous local black entertainers who knew
and worked with Elvis thru the years.

O.K I believe you. But why do all of these black artists keep bringing up this
quote? Anybody know how it originated? Perhaps by someone who had a personal
vendetta against our man?
This is not an isolated thing by just one or two black performers , but lots of
black performers bring up this quote when cutting up our man. White performers
as well have mentioned this..
Can it be that maybe someone had heard our man use the N word on occasion? Thank
God no bootleg recordings have surfaced with our man using the N word a la Buddy
Holly. With all of the bootleg stuff of Buddy Holly singing about "N..ers"
(I'm just quoting the N word here from Buddy's lips and songs) why does our man
constantly get this slack from black entertainers and never Buddy Holly.
There's recorded evidence of Holly's racism but as far as the King is concerned
the only documented facts regarding black people are all positive ones. Hireing
them, basically living with black folks at Graceland, working with them on
stage, buying complete strangers (who were black) expensive things, praising
the talent of many black artists etc. etc. etc.....
Go figure.......
B.B King by the was has never said a bad word about our man. It seems that he
loved ole E and constantly praises him and sticks up for him to this day as far
as the nasty rumours are concerned.

No he didn't but he would have been mortified at the english people standing in
a circle tonight with a Confederate Flag and Elvis' picture in the middle at
the Meet The Brits dance in downtown Mem.

It was near the end of the night and I looked over to see every member of the
bar staff (exclusively black) standing watching this spectacle.

They should really be warned about this - rightly or wrongly, the flag is seen
as a symbol of slavery to blacks.

There was a photographer on the stage at the time - let's hope to god we wasn't
an american photographer.

You're doing the same thing to Buddy that others do to Elvis.

FYI -- that's NOT Buddy Holly on those bootlegs.

Note: Buddy was so "racist" he brought Little Richard to his Lubbock home for dinner when they

Yeah, and I've had Beatle fans tell me that Oh, I Need You is a lost
Beatles track. I've heard the song and I can tell you that it's Johnny
Rebel who recorded a whole lot of this kind of stuff.

Is there anything out there in a biography of Buddy, an interview with

One of your reasons, Jason, is where Elvis comes from. Let me tell you,
racism is alive and well up north as well.

Like Cathy said, we ALL have our prejudices, even black people do. I
live in the south. I wish the people that have never lived or been in
the south would get an education!!
Racism exists everywhere.
Elvis was no more racist than you.

The people that keep bringing up this same old tired "reason" to hate
ELVIS are the racists. It is sour grapes...pure and simple. JEALOUSY.
So Jason, the next time you say Elvis could have been racist because of
where he came from, please think again. Racism is everywhere. The
south doesn't own the patent on it.....just because northerners say so.
Rejoice and be happy, Jason, the civil war has been over for a long,
long time.

I enjoy reading biographies and have read many over the years, but not a one on
Buddy. Yet I always thought this was somewhat common knowledge about Buddy in
the whole Buddy Holly scene. Yet, of course swept under the carpet and never
discussed. I first heard these rumors about 7 maybe 8 years ago . I used to
attend a record/cd convention every 3 months which consisted of many dealers
selling and trading in bootleg/import music and video recordings. I became
friends with this one guy who had somewhat totally different tastes in music as
myself. My big three then as well as now has basically always been Elvis of
course, the Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin. These were the only three acts
which I collected in boots/imports. The guy I became friendly with was heavy
into Buddy Holly, the Beatles, and the Beach Boys. He didn't mind Elvis , but
hated my other two acts with a passion. Any ways he and this dealer got to
talking about Buddy, and it was those two who filled me in on the Buddy thing.
They both bought into it
Then , a few years later, turns out this friend of mine has heard the same
thing. He even played me the N song from the apartment tapes. So hey, what was
I to think? It doesn't sound too far fetched does it?
I never dwelled on it or really gave it a second thought for years, until I
brought it up in my post the other day. Maybe subconsciously I was hoping to get
some answers on this subject. I think I did have a couple glasses of wine that

There is also a lot of racism in my little pocket of the world, Northwest
Indiana. I also abhor the "n" word. But the racism I see is equally bad on
both sides of the fence: black, white, and hispanic. As always, though, it all
comes down to the individual.

As Dr. King said, "judge a man not by the color of his skin, but by the content
of his character." All races are guilty of judging others by the color of the
skin. Nobody has the market cornered on racism.

So true Chuck.
My father and his entire family was discriminated against his entire
life. To the point of actually warning me, "Never tell anyone of your
American Indian heritage."
It obviously was a bad thing then, but I have never experienced any
ugliness about it.
My friend was telling me just this morning that he almost reported a
man at the store on a cell phone....because he had been speaking in
another language and he was of the iraqi nationality, or look. He said
"When he spoke in English on that cell phone, he said: "I'll pick it up
don't worry. He wants 300 or so?"
Dear Lord, maybe he was sending hershey bars or chewing gum. I think it
was being paranoid and ridiculous, and he says I am too trusting. I

If you want to walk a mile in his shoes.....then you have a right to
make that remark. Until then, you obviously were never an American
Indian trying to make a living and raise a family in the 30's or
40's..... what you are is a fast paced put down artist and that has
it's equality in racism, you are too busy trying to be correct so you
fail to see this is true.

Let me say it again; fuck him for being ashamed and teaching his children to be
ashamed. Be who you are, not who you never were.

Yes, I know very well what I wrote. More than I can say for your

People like you that have this tendency to quote Elvis like he was Christ, make
me sick. He isn't a dashboard Jesus or some religious icon. Quit taking the
sexuality out of Elvis.

Allen,
Debbie is right....I cringe at those "PMS" posts.
Please remember that "Dogs" don't have PMS and I am past having PMS,
the reference your using is to a female, which in Devildogs case might
be a thought. lol Please don't put us ladies down. Okay? ; )
Please do not make wise cracks to the big guys and gals...I can't get
you out of moves like that. Some are nice and don't deserve it like
Dawn. Others are too hardcore to rescue you from. Not that anyone needs
any help from me. Just an opinion of course.

I in no way take sexuality out of Elvis or put Elvis in place of
Christ! When he was right (either /or) why waste a great phrase. Your
usual in low class bar room brawl.

I am proud of who I am. If I am "Kooky" It is because I am an
individual with my own style and my own ideals. They differ from yours,
and if that makes me the "Kooky" one, so be it.

You Dear are a Horses Ass of another color.
I have said several times, I am certain they are in the archives with
my name on them....I did not work on large animals. I saw a couple of
the horses. I petted them, suggested the regular Veterinarian see to a
slight limp. By this time..you want me to discribe the horse or
remember it's name? lol I couldn't take my eyes of Elvis.... what would
you expect? I was as professional as any human red blooded girl of 20
could expect to be under those weird luck of the draw circumstances.
Yeah, I am rolling in "Kookiness." I am trying to juggle answering
posts and enjoying a movie....
I guess compared to you, I might be your Mothers age. Or not even
that.You have seen photo's and I have a couple under my profile..they
were not taken 80 years ago. lol I have strong hands, years of hard
work. Weight training, etc.

He once got on a "so called" kick, I mean it was "so called" this and "so
called" that, every other sentence. I swear it lasted nearly a year.

That's why I was surprised to see him lash out at Dawn for, in his words

Well, I wasn't really surprised. Maybe I was so called surprised.

Your thinking of Male menopause AL.... at least this is what they
finally think happens, when levels of Testosterone decline in middle
age. Once it was only Women who had PMS pre-menopausal and full blown
menopause (funny word btw) especially following a hysterectomy, which
can toss a 20 yr old female into it. Never heard of PMS in men.

My Father was not a racist.
My Father was denied jobs on the premis that he might be a drunken bum
from the reservation.
He was denied housing because idiots on the block thought it meant
pow-wows and tee-pees in the backyard!
He was attacked by a white man, being stabbed several times....guess
who went to jail for the fight?
Now shut your inconsiderate, uninformed mouth. You have no right to
call my Father anything. You didn't know him or live his life. Your
just barely living your own right now.
