"We thought teaching was a safe job"

Chennai - Thirty-nine-year-old Uma Maheshwari died with many dreams.
She hoped to see her daughters study medicine and become doctors one
day. She wanted to become a college lecturer. She was about to finish
her M.Phil. Only two papers were left.

She might have even wished to see her two daughters one last time.
They both stay in a hostel attached to their school in Ambattur. Uma
Maheshwari got to see them only on weekends.

"The only children she got to see every day were at the school," said
R.Sadanand, her maternal uncle. "They were like her own children. She
wanted all of them to have a bright future," he added.

"But today, a boy chased her and stabbed her even as she tried to run
out of the classroom. Where is this violence coming from? The boy
seems too young," Mr.Sadanand said. Another uncle, Sukumar, said that
Uma Maheshwari was a hard-working teacher. "We all thought teaching
was a safe job. She got home at a reasonable time as well. But, a
student killing his own teacher... shows the direction in which the
world is heading. Security has to be provided even in schools from
now on."

On Thursday evening, the faces of visitors to her house in Mandaveli
were pale and full of disbelief. "How could this happen in a school?"
was a common refrain. Many teachers from the Anglo-Indian school
where Uma Maheshwari taught Hindi and physics for the last six years
were present. The soft chanting of Hindu prayers and Christian hymns
were the only sounds that cut through the silence.

Though the boy who stabbed her seems to have claimed during police
interrogation that she was excessively strict, some of Uma
Maheshwari's former students are aghast. Back in 2006, Anuj Vignesh
was a Class IX student in Bala Vidya Mandir where she taught physics
during her previous stint. "She was a really, really nice teacher,"
he says. "Never in a million years was she a strict teacher. She was
so nice that we used to bully her. She can't be strict even if she
tried. I am shocked and surprised."

About the terrorist Goon Squad:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
As everyone knows, a goon is a bully or thug who terrorizes or tries
to do away with opposition.

"Myself, Mallu. Yourself?" (V. Bhattathiri) <KalluMallu...@gmail.com>
tries his best to be a bully -- telling others what and when to post,
where to post and where not to post, deliberately publishing lies
about others, stalking and abusing them with hate speech -- but fails
miserably. He is really stressed out, and like his lap dog Prem
Thomas (who currently posts as "P. Rajah" <u...@this.com>, and issues
*death threats* to people), is priming himself for conditions such as
stroke and heart disease. Others in the Goon Squad include
Dayashankar M. Joshi "DMJoshi" <josh...@gmail.com> who displays
unquestioning obedience to Goon Squad thugs, and the instigator who
posts as "Bholu" <bh...@hotmail.com>

The Goon Squad currently post most of their abuse through eternal-
september.org and by writing someone else's name or handle in the
"From:" header -- their favorite now is "fanab...@gmail.com" (note
the extra "b" and "gmail.com") to make it appear as if the posts are
from "fana...@aol.com", who has been a regular poster for many years.

Chennai - Students in lower classes had no inkling of the incident
Tension gripped Armenian Street in Parry's Corner on Thursday as word
spread that a teacher had been murdered in a private school in the
area. The St. Mary's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School which is
nestled behind a church is 167 years old. Around 1,500 students study
in the school.

The class IX student, who carried a kitchen knife, had attacked a
teacher, Uma Maheshwari, while she was correcting notes in a
classroom on the first floor of the building. According to a police
officer investigating the case, the boy had purchased the knife on
Tuesday from a shop for Rs.20 and planned to carry out the act on
Wednesday itself.

By noon, parents gathered in front of the school while shocked
teachers huddled in a classroom on the first floor. Teachers and
parents repeatedly said the incident had caught them by surprise.

Most of the parents and the few teachers who were present in the
school repeatedly used phrases such as "it is unbelievable," "we are
shocked," "we are all upset," and "we cannot believe how this
happened." The school declared holiday after the lunch break around
11.30 a.m.

N. Punitha and her husband, residents of Broadway, came to the school
after hearing from their son, who is in class XII, about the
incident. "My son's class was writing a revision test when the
students heard the ambulance siren. He told us that the students
became agitated on seeing the school authorities scurrying around.
The students learnt that a teacher had been injured and that the
school had closed for the day. She was a nice teacher. We learnt that
the teacher had died, so we rushed to the school."

According to several parents who had gathered at the school, there
have been no complaints about harsh disciplining of students. N.G.
Harikrishnan, alumnus and father of two sons who are studying in the
school, became emotional. "It's upsetting. I can't believe something
like this could have happened in the school," he said.

Agitated parents blamed it on the influence of cinema. "This is a big
disappointment to us. What culture is this? Ban songs like Kolaveri
which have a bad influence on children," said Nath, a parent. Another
parent said, "The school ensured that the boys are good
[disciplined]. We had no complaints against the teachers."

While adults discussed the issue and gathered in groups near the
school, students in the lower classes had no inkling of the incident.
A class VII student who was waiting outside the school gate said he
did not know why the school had declared holiday. When asked why he
was waiting he said, "I am waiting for the driver of our school van.
He is inside the school. The boys sent me to fetch him."
