The GDP is reported, today, to be up 3.3 percent, while unemployment
is down by 10,000 claims. So much for a bad economy...right? Gas
prices are down. Jobs are up. Production is up. Whatever will the
Democrats condemn now?

Did you know that you are one of the most consistent sources of
disinformation?

Did you also know that you name yourself after european mountains?

Do you know how goofy that is?

Well, just recently a few folks were bitching that Congress was to
blame for high gas prices. So are you now ready to give them their
due for these good economic numbers? Didn't think so. More right-
wing hypocrisy comin' at ya!

Wrong. The economy is the pits for most Americans.

Are YOU employed? It appears not.

>Gas prices are down.

After going through the roof, they dropped back to being only up a
dollar a gallon.

>Jobs are up.

After months of layoffs, a few new jobs is not a recovery.

>Production is up.

On the backs of the poor.

Republican politics and pseudo-economics. Budget deficits that ruin
the future for our children. Raping of the environment, which also
will ruin the future for our children. The dirty politics of division
rather than the forging of consensus using compromise.

The article said that the bulk of the increase (3.1%) came from a
decrease in imports and a growth in exports caused by the drop in the
value of the dollar. In other words, not from "increased
productivity", but by making imports too expensive for the poor.

The GDP is not a bad number, if taken with a few caveats.

First, it is not population-adjusted. If GDP goes up 1% but population
goes up 1.1%, there is actually less per person. The US population
growth rate is a little under 1%.

Second, rising GDP doesn't mean anybody in particular benefits. If the
extra production is all going to a select group within society, then
only they benefit from everybody else's hard work. In the US over the
last decade or so, productivity and GDP continue to rise, yet the median
family income, adjusted for inflation, has actually dropped.

Absolutely. In fact, the entire "bad economy" scare was
a total hoax. Rather like global warming in that regard.

It's the "white crow" effect, you know...

Rather like not matching the eighth hottest year ever recorded
therefore means we're "cooling", isn't it?

Wrong, idiot.

UNemployment is not down from last week.

They are still above the recent higher than average figures.

First time unemployment applications are.

There is a difference even a microcephalic like you should comprehend.

Meanwhile, back here on Planet Reality, personal income just took
its greatest drop in three years:

Speaking of "reality", I-55 and I-59 interstates are in contraflow mode - as
of 4am this (Sunday) morning - all lanes go North.

We're under a state of emergency; the people right at the coast (as well as -
I think - New Orleans) are under mandatory evacuation.

Apparently, "Gustav" is speeding up; "they" (and you know how "they" are)
are now predicting landfall tomorrow rather than the earlier prediction of
Tuesday.

Electricity and water will, of course, go down immediately (along with the
trees). Motels are filling up into Memphis. Shelters are much more
co-ordinated than Kat - human shelters, humans with pets in carry cages and
"special needs" - mental and physical from what I can tell.

MPB (Mississippi Public Broadcasting) covers the state (8 or 9 repeaters) and
also cover a /lot/ of Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee and Alabama). During
Kat, MPB did an incredible job. Also, in many parts of the state (here in
Lincoln County, fer instance) we get two of the MPB frequencies.

[So many of the daytime TeeVee shows are aimed at children so that that
programming is not changed - it's for the children (finally, that statement
is true).]

So - in all likihood - I'll be yakking with y'all late this week or early
next week.
