Ta in advance
I can think of three schools off the top of my head in which you can do
a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies: The Union Institute, Walden
University, and the more recently established Capella University. (All
are regionally accredited.)
While I cannot speak for the latter two, I can tell you that there are
*many* arts-based majors at Union (from which I graduated). You can
major in a single area (such as art, art history, music, psych, etc.) or
carry an interdisciplinary major (such as art and education, history and
psychology, etc.). As for the major itself, it's up to you. I've often
said that one can earn a regionally accredited Ph.D. in Basket Weaving,
as long as the program consists of *doctoral-level* basket weaving.
Even then, however, I usually recommend a broader degree title for the
purpose of marketability (such as "Appalachian Anthropology" or, better
yet, "Art and Anthropology").
The flexibility factor, at least at Union, is *total*. A few years ago,
they broke down the single Graduate School into two separate graduate
schools under the umbrella of the Graduate College. While there are
*specific* course requirements in the School of Professioanl Psychology
(since its students are on a licensure track), the School of
Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences has total flexibility and no required
courses per se. (Yes, there are a couple of short residencies but, other
than the colloquium done at matriculation, the learner can choose
specific seminars from a smorgasbord, and they do not have to be in your
field.)
As for "ideas" for an arts-based doctorate, just be creative. And look
at what *other* doctorate programs in the fields have. If you want a
sample of such a program, you'll find the whole ball of wax for my Ph.D.
in Religion and Law from Union on my home page (including Learning
Agreement, Program Summary, Dissertation, etc.).
