to
I've gotten a few e-mails over the past few days asking for graduate programs
in theology, philosophy, and really the humanities in general -- an unusual
volume, in fact, owing I guess to the fact that we've got a new year coming
up fairly soon.
Because of this, and because of the fact that I have not been updating
it as regularly as I would like, I've decided to give you all your Christmas
present early... :P Several notes:

* This list should be considered VERY preliminary. It will contain errors.
Please let me know of any specific mistakes and I'll endeavor to
correct them ASAP.
* GAAP is listed in a very broad and inconsistent fashion pending my
further education regarding specific forms of GAAP. All schools
listed as meeting GAAP almost certainly meet GAAP, but double check
before going through with anything (as I'm not an expert on this).
* Please let me know of any programs which fit the bill, so to speak, or
which even _might_ fit the bill.

I hope someone finds this list to be of help!

Peace and warmest regards,

Tom

DISCLAIMER
Use this document at your own risk. I (Tom Head) don't
profess to know squat. This document is meant to give
you helpful leads to follow, but you still have to do
your own legwork. I won't be responsible for the
accuracy or usefulness of this listing.

* AA/Personal Ministries
* BA/Religion
* BA/Theological Studies

- Amended information on Liberty University to
take short residencies into account
(thanks, Sharon!).
11/21/99 - Only five people saw it before 11/22, but it's
worth noting that this document owes a
great deal to Steve Levicoff, who suggested
most of the undergraduate and some of the
graduate regionally accredited theology
programs described below. (Many thanks!)

A WORD ON ACCREDITATION
Two places I would check for information on
accreditation:
- Bears' Guide to Earning Degrees
Nontraditionally (13th edition)
[ISBN 0-9629312-4-1], chapters six
through nine.
I make a point of only listing degree programs which
are either:
- Accredited by U.S. agencies recognized by
both the Department of Education and
the Council for Higher Education
Accreditation, or
- Overseas universities which otherwise meet
generally accepted accrediting
practices.
While I recognize that unaccredited programs have been
a great help to some, I will not knowingly list _any_
unaccredited programs in this document (as I lack the
expertise to determine the viability of individual
unaccredited programs).

degree includes courses on ethics
(including a separate course on
journalistic ethics) and Islamic
studies, I'm assuming that
philosophical themes are (as in
the case of Lancaster's MA)
integrated with the topic of
mass communication. More
information on this program, and
on the fascinating possibility of
Allama Iqbal OU in general, is
welcome.

Understood -- actually, I had noted the Grad Dip in Religious Education and
the very heavy patristics/church history emphasis of its Th.M. and just
assumed that it was of the Roman Catholic tradition. I might change
"Tradition" from "Roman Catholic" to "Offers Anglican and Roman Catholic
Programs." I think it's a state school anyway, and had really planned to take
that line out before posting the list publicly. Thanks for clearing things
up.

Hey, very nice! I'll give these folks a look and hopefully add them to the

Many thanks!

Huge List Tom. I've just glanced through it.

Just a couple of points. For Charles Sturt you list tradition of Roman
Catholic. Many, if not most of its degrees in theology are offered in
conjunction with St Mark's Theological College (it's St Mark's something or
other). This college has an Anglican (Episcopalian) background.

As far as I know - could be wrong - only the Grad Certificate and Grad Dip
in Religious Education (Catholic) are offered in conjunction with the
Catholic Seminary - Vianney College.

Also, Australian Catholic University (www.acu.edu.au) has been offering DL
degrees for a number of years - esp through the Brisbane (QLD) campus. As
of next year, they have taken a number of courses online. Grad Cert / Grad
Dip / Masters in Arts (Theol Stud); Master of Management, Master of
Religious Education, and Master of Nursing (Leadership). These are
accessible through ACU Web (www.acuweb.com.au) These courses are fulley
online - each subject costs AUD750 which is about $500US.

If this happens, then we'll have to either redefine Berne or redefine GAAP
-- but I don't think that it's terribly likely.

Absolutely! Click here:

Depends on the form of GAAP -- but, generally, no. I would not regard
DETC accreditation as equal to, say, a UK Royal Charter.

Hey Tom!

Speaking about religious education in the Anglican tradition, St. John's
College in Nottingham, England, offers studies via some form of distance
learning. They call this "sandwich courses". By way of these courses, you can
take some classes of even degrees via distance learning while working in a
parish. What is great about St. John's College is that this institution is
recognized by the Church of England. However, I am still not sure if it is
possible to study this way outside of England. I contacted them and sent them
an electronic mail, but they never replied me. Does anybody know how how
things work here?

Regards,

Al Caballero
