strange signal strengs variations.

I recently installed a dual LNB system and added a multiplex switch
for the three boxes on my system., I've noticed some STRANGE signal
readings with my Philips DSX 5500. Below is a listing of my channel
strengtrhs starting at transponder 1. Now, the thing I don't get is
why some of my signals are at like....50, some are in the 90's, and
transponder 28 is 0. Does anyone know why this could be, and what's on
this transponder 28?

Assuming those are DirecTV transponder numbers...
Numbers 4, 12, 18, 20, 26, and 28 are spot beam transponders.
Not all of them will serve your local area.

Ahh, ok, I guess spot beaming certain locals...so I guess that means
even if I hakced my card, I wouldn't get every area. or what are they
carrying....cuz I know on my old box if you tuned to a channel, then
went to setup, the box would display the current transponder, and I
know one of the adult PPV channels is on transponder 4, why are they
spot beaming those, I mean, I'm just not sure what they're wanting to
spot beam. I mean, I know theoritcally about spot beaming....but I
mean....I don't know...I mean, are the transponders set for
areas..like..can they spotbeam a specific signal on transpoder 18 to
one area and another to another, or can the satellites not do that. I
gues sI need to look it up. If you have any more information, please
let me know.

You've already beed told about the spotbeams.
In addition to that, DTV has 3 satellites at 101 degress, with a
maximum of 16 transponders each.

There is nothing other than local channels on transponder 4
from the 101 Deg. W. Long. orbit location. Look here:

Spot beams enable the reuse of transponder channels over
different geographic areas.

I was nopt aware DirecTV was spot beaming. I had directv back in 1998
and got rid of it last year because my contract was up and Dish
Network offered me a better deal, but after my year was up with dish,
I went back to DirecTV because the DishNetwork equipment had too many
problems.

so, back when I was an original subscriber and instaled systems, all
the transponders were hitting really high numbers.

DirecTV started using spotbeams on Dec 27 2001, this included all 41
of the markets currently being served. They claim to be launching
another spotbeam sat later this year, to peovide the same capability
at the 119 degree location, and adding even more locals markets).

At this time, DTV has 63 locals markets (44 on spotbeam) and plans to
add 38 more). These (and some of the others) should be on the 119
spotbeams.
