This is a brief interview with Peter Davison from the local Sky TV
magazine "SkyWatch" (April 2013).

Five minutes with ...
PETER DAVISON

Peter Davison is one of Britain's most well-known faces thanks to
a variety of roles, including the fifth Doctor in "Doctor Who"
from 1981 to 1984. At 29, he was the youngest actor to take on
the roles until Matt Smith became the 11th Doctor in 2009 at age
26, and he has reprised his role several times for charity
specials and audio recordings.

Q: This year marks the 50th anniversary of "Doctor Who". What do
you have planned to mark the occasion?

A: I'm coming to New Zealand for a convention and I received a
letter the other day from the BBC wanting to discuss various
things that are happening. I think they have a lot planned
and it will continue to gain momentum as the anniversary
approaches.

Q: Did you ever imagine that 30 years on you'd still be involved
in it to such an extent?

A: No, never. I always thought that "Doctor Who" would carry on,
but I suppose I thought that when I left it no one would be
interested in me as the Doctor. When I did the show, there was
very little around in the way of video taping, so the idea
that people would have access to every single story you did
way back then was inconceivable.

Q: How do you think the most recent series compare to the
classics?

A: The thing about the returning series is that when it first
came back it was produced by Russell T Davies, who grew up
watching "Doctor Who" and was a huge fan, and his successor is
Steven Moffat, who, if anything, was an even bigger fan of the
original series. So even thought the series has evolved, the
producers have got a keen eye and have kept the links with the
classic series.

Q: What are your fondest memories from your time as the Doctor?

A: We had such enormous fun making it. You had to get over the
laughter factor because sometimes the scripts were quite
funny. We used to have a great time, even though when I was
going through it, I didn't quite realise what a good time I
was having.

Q: In that respect, how hard was it to leave after three years?

A: It was hard in one respect because I knew all these people
I'd worked with for three years, but I felt that if I waited
any longer, it would be more difficult to move on. But when
we recorded the last story, it was very painful. I remember
that last day when I saw Colin dressed in my outfit and
thinking I didn't want to leave.

To celebrate the show's 50th anniversary, Sky TV channel UKTV is
screening classic and contemporary episodes [in Australia and
New Zealand] of "Doctor Who" on Sunday afternoons featuring the
11 Doctors in turn. Tune in this month for episodes featuring
Tom Baker and next month for episodes starring Peter Davison.

Brand new episodes of "Doctor Who" screen on Prime [in New
Zealand] on Tuesdays at 8:30pm, from 9 April.

Peter Davison will be in Auckland [New Zealand] on 13 April for
The Lords of Time convention, along with Colin Baker, Sylvester
McCoy, Paul McGann, and special guests. For details visit
